VIDEO: Autocar drive the Pagani Zonda R

Pagani Zonda R

After filming the Cinque Roadster clip you’d reckon Jamie Corstorphine from Autocar would be content. But, no, he wanted more. And more was delivered in the form of the Pagani Zonda R. It is powered by a 750bhp 6.0 V12 and weighs in at a miserly 1075kg. You may also remember this is the car that lapped the Nürburgring in 6 minutes and 47 seconds. Simply astounding! All you need is a spare €1.5 million (AU$2.1m) and some change for the taxman.

Ferrari 458 Italia lights my fire, again!

Ferrari 458 Italia

This burning Ferrari 458 Italia phenomenon is getting out of control. After the break you can see video of the sizzling 458 shown above, which was filmed in China.Apparently there have been four fire incidents involving the 458 Italia in the last two weeks.

Reported in the UK newspaper The Telegraph a Ferrari spokesman from Britain has said, “We are taking all the reports very seriously and are looking into them, but we are treating them all as separate incidents.”

With waiting lists approaching three years you’d be a bit pissed off if you already had one of these otherwise fantastic cars only to see it end up in a smouldering, useless mess.

More Porsche 918 Spyder driving footage

Porsche 918 Spyder

With the recent appearance of footage showing the Porsche 918 Spyder in action it seems Porsche design boss Michael Mauer was feeling left out. But, as you can see from the pic above, Herr Mauer eventually got his way and found some one on one time with the 918 and some open road.

In the video below Mauer talks a little about the new Spyder and has a short squirt behind the wheel, in what must be close to being the best looking coupé to be revealed in 2010 so far.

VIDEO: David Coulthard, the Isle of Man and the SLS AMG

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The combination of ex-Formula One driver, revered tarmac and Mercedes’ latest supercar is one well worth savouring. Indeed, Mercedes-Benz made a 3D film about the experience. You can watch the old-skool 2D version featuring David Coulthard after the jump. There’s also a mini making of documentary, too, which is well worth a look.

You might recall Tiff Needell from Fifth Gear tested the SLS on the day this film was being shot. If you’re a fan of the latest Mercedes Gullwing, then watch Tiff ripping it around the Isle of Man TT course once again.

Adrian Newey hospitalised after Ginetta G50 crash

Adrian Newey

Adrian Newey, full-time F1 technical director for Red Bull Racing and part-time racer, found himself in a spot of bother on the weekend while taking part in a Ginetta G50 race at Snetterton in the UK.

On lap 10 of the 18 lap race Newey was pushed wide by a competitor before suffering reasonably heavy contact on the final corner with Tony Hughes. After the impact Hughes was able to free himself from the car and he appeared okay. Newey, however, was taken to hospital for observation.

Lawrence Tomlinson, Ginetta chairman released the following statement, “Adrian has been taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure after being clipped by Julien Draper of Barwell Motorsport which caused Tony Hughes of Speedworks to have a side on collision with Newey’s DynoJet car.

“It’s testament to the strength of the G50 roll cage that the car withstood heavy impact and there were no serious injuries.”

A YouTube video of the incident is available below.

A pax lap inside the BMW 1 Series M Coupé

Chris Harris

Since last week’s news of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé emerged a number of videos from the Ascari track event have made their way on to YouTube. Journalists were offered passenger laps inside the 1M development prototype and one of the better clips is this one featuring Chris Harris from Evo. Harris had the foresight to interview driver Frank Isenberg and tried to extract new information from him.

Not much was given away, although Isenberg reckons the 1M could lap the Nürburgring in around 8:07, which is damn close to matching the time of the E92 M3. Indeed Eisenberg says, “Next week we will definitely know more.” It’s not clear if his words were in relation to a Nürburgring lap time or a general comment on the 1M. Well, next week is almost up, so let’s see what news comes to light in the next few days.

For his part Harris seemed quite impressed with the brief teaser he was given, describing the 1M as having a “lovely balance”. He also reckons the BMW boffins have done little to the 135i engine at this point other than remap the ECU and fit an uprated exhaust. Harris predicts the 1 Series M Coupé will have 340bhp (250kW).

The video from Harris and one other (embed feature disabled) can be seen after the break.

Last hurrah for BMW E60 M5

BMW E60 M5

As the door for a new M model opens, the door for the mighty E60 M5 has closed. With 373kW (507bhp) from its normally aspirated 5.0 litre V10 the most recent M5 was properly quick. In the opinion of AUSmotive it was also the best looking M5 ever made. By far.

In all, a total of 20,548 E60 M5s were sold, making it the highest selling M5 of all time. It may also be the only time we see a V10 stuffed under an M5 bonnet. Rumours suggest the forthcoming F10-based M5 will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8.

Joining BMW’s press release below waving goodbye to the E60 is an image gallery, along with a couple of YouTube clips courtesy of Top Gear.

McLaren MP4-12C at the 2010 Goodwood FoS

McLaren MP4-12C

The official public reveal of the new McLaren MP4-12C supercar took place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend. In fact, it was the first car to make the run up the hill this year, informally opening the show, as it were.

McLaren have released a short video of the weekend’s activities and the sound of the 3.8 litre V8 is rather tasty. From the footage shown Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton weren’t exactly hanging about, either.

Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director, reckons Goodwood was the ideal place to debut the company’s newest road car, “The visitors to our stand were the perfect blend of car enthusiasts and potential customers; I’m delighted that we chose Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil the 12C to the public. Two British Formula 1 World Champions were behind the wheel of the car as we led the field up the hill. A major landmark, delivered to McLaren’s high standards.”
