Entry-level V6 ruled out for next-gen Audi R8

2013 Audi R8

An entry-level twin turbo V6 has been ruled for the next-gen Audi R8, Automobile Magazine reports. It was understood that aggressive pricing for a V6 model would help boost sales, but alas it has been scrapped.

Also shelved were plans for a lightweight R8 Ultra. Actually, this one sounds pretty interesting. It was to rely on carbon fibre to reduce weight and source its power from Audi’s famed 2.5 litre five cylinder. At least, that’s what the report states. Sounds pretty cool if you ask us.

So that leaves the next-gen R8 to follow suit from the current model. That’s to say you’ll be able to get with a V8 or V10 engine and it will again be twinned with the Lamborghini replacement.

2013 Audi R8 facelift revealed

2013 Audi R8

Audi has given its acclaimed R8 a bit of a mid-cycle spruce up and we reckon they’ve done a grand job. The headline act is a new V10 plus Coupé (pictured above). Hairdressers need not apply, as it’s available in hardtop Coupé form only. The R8 V10 plus takes the 386kW/530Nm from the regular V10 model and ups the ante to 404kW and 540Nm.

As you can see there’s new lighting treatments for the R8, as well. Now standard across the board are LED headlights for both low and high beam. These days standard old indicators don’t cut the mustard, so Audi has fitted the rear light assembly with “dynamic indicators”; these illuminate outwards in the direction the driver is about to turn.

For the first time the R8 gets a proper S tronic double clutch transmission, ridding itself of the cumbersome R tronic gearbox. The 7-speed S tronic is standard on V10 models and optional on V8s. The new ‘box is less than 600mm in length and places its two multi-plate clutches behind one another.

The interior hasn’t been left untouched, either, with minor cosmetic tweaks designed to keep the R8 looking fresh. We quite like the optional quilted alcantara headlining, which looks great with its matching seats.

Australian buyers keen to get their hands on the facelifted R8 will have to wait until early 2013. They’ll also need a good relationship with their local Audi Centre if they want pricing ahead of the official announcement at next year’s launch.

We’ve compiled a quick reference performance table for you below before you sink your teeth into Audi’s pics and press release after the break.

C’mon Audi Australia we #WantAnR8 too!

Last year an innocent tweet by US resident Joanne McCoy expressed her desire to have an Audi R8. For a laugh she included the hashtag #WantAnR8. So what, you say, people do stuff like that all the time. Now. There’s another one. And again.

But, back then, Audi of America saw Joanne’s tweet and decided to make her day. So they found out where she lived and turned up to her house, in a 412kW R8 V10, and said, “Here, drive this for a day.”

Pretty cool, huh.

Now, in a more organised fashion, Audi of America is repeating the dose. This time though they’ll be working eight days a week and offering the same courtesy to eight individual winners. All the winner will have to do is decide, do they want to enjoy the R8 V10 on the track, or for a day on the streets.

The video above has been created to promote the latest campaign. So, what would you do: track or street? And, what chance of Audi Australia following suit?

Audi R8 LMS ultra ready for 2012 season

Audi R8 LMS ultra

It’s now over three years since Audi first released a racing version of their R8 supercar. In that time it has won over 110 races, including the 2011 Bathurst 12 Hour, and claimed 12 national/international titles. The R8 LMS ultra is the latest incarnation of Audi’s GT3 racer and is set to be launched in March next year.

The 5.2 litre V10 now produces a tidy 419kW (570hp) and has had its exhaust tuned for better mid-range response. The transmission has also been fiddled with, so too the body, with revised aerodyamics and lighter doors.

If you’d like to buy one of these beauties you’ll need around half a million bucks, plus running costs. If you already have an R8 LMS and times are tough, fear not, Audi will help bring your car to 2012 spec for a fraction of the cost.

Truth in powersliding

Audi R8 V10

Back in May we learned an Audi R8 V10 and an empty El Toro Marine Base were a match made in heaven. Now, we get an encore performance. Bravo, I hear you say.

The odd couple

Audi R8 V10 v Honda Type R Mugen

Here’s an interesting video comparison from Autocar. On hand is the awesome Audi R8 V10 being pestered by a (UK market only) buzzing Honda Type R Mugen. Now, at £40K the Mugen is no shortcut to cheap thrills by any means. But asking it to keep up with the £100K R8 is a pointless exercise, isn’t it?

Well watch the video to find out. I guess the real point here is, if you had access to both of these cars and a twisty road, you’d most likely want a piece of the action too. A cracking car is a cracking car, doesn’t matter what company it keeps.

2010 Audi R8 GT officially announced

Audi R8 GT

Audi has just released official info on their latest R8 supercar. Badged the Audi R8 GT the car is limited to 333 examples and boasts an enhanced 5.2 litre V10 engine producing 412kW (560hp). With 100kg of weight stripped from it, the R8 GT, with standard R tronic transmission, can accelerate to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Those numbers represent an improvement of 26kW and 0.3 seconds over the regular R8 V10. Other differences include a revised body kit, first seen in last week’s spy shots. You can pick it by the carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser. Also note the aluminium side mirror mounts and fixed rear wing. The side “flicks”on the outer front wings also give the game away, while helping to increase the GT’s downforce. Revised LED daytime running lights, now form a constant strip of light, also indicate this is a more special R8.

Weight reduction of the R8 GT was achieved in obvious areas such as lighter seats and battery, resulting in a combined saving of 40kg. Use of a thinner glass windscreen and polycarbonate elsewhere yielded a net loss of 9kg. Carbon fibre reinforced plastic body panels also saved over 13kg of precious weight. The level of detail sought is impressive, though. For example, careful selection and trimming of materials for the carpets, insulation, the air intake, the braking system, the fixed rear wing and more contributed to the GT’s diet. Over 2.5kg was saved through the use of thinner sheet metal with addition cutouts, as well.

Given those weight savings it is surprising, perhaps, that few luxuries have been lost inside the cabin. Climate control and power windows you can probably excuse. But a standard navigation system and 465 watt Bang & Olufsen stereo seem a little counter-productive. The alcantara covered steering wheel is a nice touch, though. Its a shame the same can’t be said for the white dials.

The quattro all-wheel drive system sends 85 per cent of the car’s power to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. The car’s 43:57 weight distribution and tweaks to its ESP parameters allows “spectacular, but safe, oversteer when accelerating our of a corner”. That’s what we like to see.

Wheels are 19″ in size and made from forged alloy. Up front they are 8.5″ wide, while 11″ at the back should help in getting all that power down. Carbon fibre ceramic brakes are standard in the GT, set off nicely by red anodised six pot calipers under the front wheels.

Die hard track day warriors can also option a bolt in roll cage and a four-point harness system to keep them in place.

Available in just four colours—Samoa Orange metallic, Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl effect—you can secure an R8 GT in Germany for the tidy sum of €193,000 (approx AU$280K). If the R8 GT does find its way down under, expect to pay almost double that. But, if you could, you would. Wouldn’t you?

Audi R8 GT3 prototype spied

Audi R8 GT3 protoype

This flared and angry beast you see before you is understood to be an Audi R8 GT3 prototype. With matt black paint, and even wider sideblades this V10 powered coupé looks sensational.

Also of note on the bodywork is a revised front splitter with two small fins on either side to aid downforce. At the back you see a fixed rear wing, and some more aero work on the rear valance. Two enlarged round exhaust tips also let you know that this is no ordinary R8 V10, if there is such a thing.

Spotted on roads near the Nürburgring you can expect Audi to be dialling in lots of data learned from their 24 hour race debut last year where they almost took home the chocolates.

Audi R8 V10 – World Performance Car 2010

Audi R8 V10

In further news from the World Car of the Year awards the Audi R8 V10 has been named 2010’s World Performance Car. The R8 has double dipped with this title after the R8 4.2 V8 was awarded the same honour back in 2008.

The R8 knocked off some very stiff opposition to win this award, too. Joining the Audi in the final three was the Ferrari California and the Porsche 911 GT3.

The V10 powered R8 is fitted with a 5.2 litre direct injection engine, closely related to the powerplant used in the Lamborghini Gallardo. The unit develops and impressive 386kW and the car can reach 100km/h in under four seconds. Readers are invited to send in next week’s lotto numbers to AUSmotive HQ at your earliest convenience.

Audi updates R8 GT3 racer for 2010

2010 Audi R8 LMS 'Evolution'

Back in 2008 Audi launched the race-going R8 LMS. The car was prepped for the 2009 season ready to race in GT3 categories across the globe.

Indeed, the four-pronged R8 attack on the 2009 Nürburgring 24 hour race almost ended Porsche’s recent domination of the event. The #99 Phoenix Racing entry held the lead for 17 hours until a drive shaft problem cost valuable time. In the end it was the #97 Abt Sportline car that finished in second place, highlighting the impressive debut by the R8. As well as that, the R8 LMS went on to secure three championships and 23 race wins during 2009.

For the 2010 season Audi have made some changes to their go fast machines to ensure they remain capable of leading the field. The ‘Evolution’ updates include revisions to the chassis, suspension and cooling systems. While on-board electronics and the race-tuned exhaust system have been further enhanced.

Customer deliveries of the 2010 spec cars have started, with the US-British alliance of United Autosports being the first in line. If you would like to join them and you have a spare €300K+ burning a hole in your pocket, well, I’m sorry, but you’re out of luck. The 2010 production run has sold out and all customer cars will be delivered before the end of April. If you’re still keen you’ll need to try your luck with the ‘Race Experience’ program or get your name on the list for the 2011 production run.

Owners of 2009 spec R8 LMS cars are able to make the same changes to the 2010 models to ensure they can now race with the latest specification.

Australian race fans will get their chance to see the 2009-spec R8 LMS up close next weekend at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. Mark Eddy, 2008 Australian GT Champion, is the first private buyer outside of Europe to get his hands on the purpose-built GT3 racer. Find out more on the Australian GT website.
