Is Audi cooking a hotter R8 GT?

We bring you a tasty one minute video of what appears to be an Audi R8 GT circulating at the Nürburgring. The limited run of 333 R8 GTs was launched back in 2010 so it would stand to reason if Audi was going to release a new version based on the since facelifted R8.

And yet this mystery car lapping during an industry pool session is running pre-facelift headlights. Although, you can see the rear wing is bigger and reportedly the rear diffuser was different too.

While you’re speculating on what this R8 may or may not be you can enjoy the sounds of its V10 at work and also spot a few other prototypes doing their thing.

Is Audi making an RS version of the R8?

This Audi R8 was recently photographed at a service station near the Nürburgring in Germany. It’s a bit of an odd one. Are those red markings on the body work part disguise, or part bad taste? Is that lower front splitter an aftermarket add-on, or a work in progress? Are they really new exhaust exits up high, coming straight from the engine bay? Speaking of which, could there be an even more powerful V10 underneath that plastic engine cover?

But, a bigger question remains; is there really scope for yet another, driver focused, iteration of the R8 given Audi has already give us the R8 GT? Maybe this could be a rear-wheel drive only beast to take it up to the Porsche GT2 RS.

So, we have a lot of questions about this car, let’s hope Audi has some answers for us soon.

UPDATE: Word on the tweet says this car may simply be an MTM development prototype, rather than Audi being up to any new tricks. I thought there were too many unanswered questions on this one.

These new pics give us a bit more of a look inside Audi’s latest supercar, including the engraved model number detail on the shifter of the R tronic gearbox. Also available for download at the Audi site is a screensaver and some MP3 files, which you can hear below.
