Michael Schumacher rejects last-gasp Lotus offer

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

The chase for a replacement driver to cover for Kimi Raikkonen at Lotus has taken another dramatic twist with revelations 44-year-old Michael Schumacher was offered a chance at a second comeback to Formula 1.

Schumacher, who retired from F1 a second time after the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, has declined the two-race offer. Lotus is apparently unwilling to promote its reserve driver, Davide Valsecchi, and Nico Hulkenberg has already knocked back Lotus. It’s now expected Heikki Kovalainen will stand-in for Kimi in Austin and Sao Paulo.

Sabine Kehm, Michael’s manager, confirmed the offer from Lotus: “It is true they were asking and I can understand why. Everyone can see Michael is still very fit.

“I think it is fair to assume Michael would still be strong but he has happily settled in his new life.”

So was this a desperate move from Lotus, or do you think Michael could have made a valuable contribution?

Vettel second to Schumacher in race to 30 wins

2013 German Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel’s first victory in Germany was his 30th Formula 1 win overall. As much as we enjoy portraying him as the pantomime villain to Mark Webber’s hero, it’s easy to forget that Vettel’s career achievements to date are quite remarkable.

Of course, the three world championships headline his feats, but he could be on track to chase down the one stat we never thought could be beaten; Michael Schumacher’s 91 wins. That’s a long way off yet, although it’s only taken Vettel one more race than Michael to notch up 30 wins.

Vettel has just turned 26 and if he races into his 40s, as Michael did, there’s the potential to add another 300-plus race starts to his tally. With a current winning percentage of 27% that could mean another 80-odd wins ahead for Vettel.

Well, that’s enough baseless speculation, here’s the list of the six drivers to reach 30 grand prix wins and the number of races it took them:

Race starts taken to reach 30 F1 wins

  1. Michael Schumacher – 109
  2. Sebastian Vettel – 110
  3. Ayrton Senna – 114
  4. Alain Prost – 124
  5. Nigel Mansell – 179
  6. Fernando Alonso – 186

How should we remember Michael?

2012 European Grand Prix

Cast aside after what could bluntly be described as a totally wasted comeback to Formula One, let’s pause and spare a thought for Michael Schumacher.

Statistically, and perhaps practically, he is the greatest driver the sport has known. The comebackâ„¢ has not played out well. So much so, if you’d never read Schumacher’s honour roll you’d be staring down Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, and simply saying: “WTF!”

It’s actually a little sad that, at this point in time, Schumacher’s last act in an F1 car was to totally cock-up his braking and drive into the back of another competitor. Just like he did on the same stage last year.

Generally speaking, we’re not fans of Michael’s. Indeed, his dominance with Ferrari drove us away from F1 for a time. Yet, we love the category and we must, in respect for the sport, acknowledge the awe of what Schumacher has achieved. He is a giant.

So, on the day he has basically been sacked for failing to deliver consistent results, let’s share a few comments from the man himself and his most recent employers.

Michael Schumacher: “I have had three nice years with the team which unfortunately did not go as well as we all would have wanted on the sporting side. I wish Lewis well and for the team to achieve the success we worked so hard for in the build-up. I would like to thank the team for their trust and all the guys for their unconditional commitment. I will now concentrate on the next races.”

Ross Brawn, Team Principal: “On behalf of Mercedes AMG Petronas, I would first of all like to thank Michael Schumacher for the important contribution he has made to the growth of our team over the past three seasons. His energy and commitment have never wavered, even when results have not matched our own expectations, and we are determined to finish the 2012 season together on a high. As always, it has been a pleasure to work with Michael.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “Over the past three years, Michael has been a great driver and an exemplary ambassador for MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS. His experience has been an important factor in guiding the development of our team in Brackley and we extend our sincere thanks to Michael for his loyalty, team play and commitment. We will be working very hard together in order to achieve the best possible results in the remainder of the 2012 season.”

Whatever the future holds, godspeed Michael.

Michael Schumacher on 20 years in F1

Michael Schumacher, 2011 Belgian Grand Prix

Those of us with long memories of Formula One will remember the buzz caused by Michael Schumacher when he qualified in seventh place for his first Grand Prix. That was at Spa-Francorchamps in 1991; two decades ago.

At this week’s pre-race press conference Michael went along with five other drivers. Naturally, most of the questions posed to Schumacher centred around his unique anniversary.

You can read all comments after the break, but we liked this one from Michael the most, where he reminisced about his doubts prior to his F1 debut:

“I was doubtful whether my quality was good enough to compete with these guys. You see them as untouchables, especially in those moments where you had (Ayrton) Sennas, (Alain) Prosts, (Nigel) Mansells and so on. I didn’t really think I could match. Getting the first experience, coming over here and driving the car, I sought of quickly picked up the confidence that it was possible and from there on we all know. At the end of the day we are all humans, we all have limits and you drive within those and there is no reason why it is impossible to beat those guys in the past and neither these guys that are here right now. That’s the good thing about Formula One. It is always a challenge and it is always a motivating challenge that is great fun.”

Michael Schumacher returns to F1 at Valencia

MercedesGP - Valencia day 1

Michael Schumacher is back! His eagerly anticipated return to Formula One with MercedesGP took its first step overnight with the season’s first test session, held at Valenicia.

Speaking at the end of the day Schumacher, who set the third fastest time, said “It was a perfect rollout for the new car today. I felt totally comfortable and really had a feeling that everything was very natural. It felt just like at the very beginning of my career in 1991 when on the first lap, I thought ‘wow that was really fast’ and then on the second lap, I was just extremely excited. I feel like a young boy again and really enjoyed myself out there.

“We did a good job today, just making a few control checks, and the most important thing was that the car ran reliably. With Nico and I covering 79 laps between us, it was a superb job by the team.”

A full list of times from day 1 can be seen here (there were only 8 runners). There are two more days remaining on the Valencia testing schedule. Nico Rosberg will be the only MercedesGP driver to take to the track tomorrow, while Schumacher will return on day 3.

After the jump you will find more pics of Schumacher on track and in pit lane, along with statements from teammate Nico Rosberg and Team Principal Ross Brawn.

Race of Champions

The 2008 Race of Champions is being held at Wembley Stadium this weekend. To help get you in the mood, here is a clip of last year’s final, featuring Germany’s Michael Schumacher (you may have heard of him) and Sweden’s Mattias Ekström. Finally something that Schumacher didn’t win!

For more info on the 2008 happenings, check out the official Race of Champions website. If you’re not familiar with the concept, the event takes a bunch of the world’s best drivers/riders from across the major motorspot disciplines and pits them against each other in equal machinery.

This event will also be Lewis Hamilton’s first public official McLaren appearance since winning the F1 world title. To celebrate he’ll be giving his F1 car a few beans around the track, as well as racing Olympic cycling Gold medallist Chris Hoy.

Canberra’s own Mark Webber was scheduled to take part in this event, but when the Queanbeyan driver broke his leg, he had to withdraw.

Honda wants to try Schu on the other foot

Michael SchumacherHonda have reportedly offered seven-time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher a factory backed seat in the 2009 World Superbike Championship. Schumacher has been riding a Honda in the German IDM Superbike series and, according to comments by Honda Racing’s Carlo Fiorani, if Schu wants the SBK gig, it is his for the taking. Quoted in Gazzetta dello Sport, Fiorani said, “For the moment he has not asked us to race in the 2009 world championship. But if he wants to, there is a way for him (to do it). All he has to do is ask us.”

Currently, John Surtees is the only man to win both a Formula 1 and motorcycle world championship.
