Mark Webber: The road to Le Mans – part 2

Mark Webber, 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix

In the second part of the Mark Webber: Return to Le Mans feature we get a behind the scenes look at Mark’s final race, the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix.

This is all very good, but while recognising Red Bull is signing the cheques for this video series, there must be so much to the Le Mans preparations that we reckon there’s going to be a lot of quality material left on the cutting room floor.

Formula 1 is in the past for Mark, we want to see and hear his thoughts on the Porsche 919 Hybrid; the podium debut at Silverstone and the disappointment of Spa.

Mark Webber: The road to Le Mans – part 1

Mark Webber - The road to Le Mans

Mark Webber may no longer drive for the Red Bull Formula 1 team, but he’s still a Red Bull athlete. Our Mark, as we like to call him, is being featured in a short series of videos produced by Red Bull media in the build up to Le Mans, which is now less than a month away.

You can watch the video after the break, which backs the truck up a little to his second last F1 race at the United States Grand Prix. If you follow the source link below you’ll also get to read a short interview with Mark. We like this response to a question about his physical preparation for LMP1.

…I still want to stay light. It’s in my best interests. I was very, very light for the last six years of my Formula One career—everyone said I looked unwell—but that’s just how it had to be in F1 if I wanted to stay competitive. I was still 9kg overweight, but I couldn’t lose any more.

Mark Webber talks about career, past and present

Mark Webber

The chaps at XCAR films managed to get Mark Webber to spend some time in front of the camera during last week’s WEC test at Paul Ricard. They got him talking about his career and a few other bits and pieces.

We learn how Mark got started, hear about his departure from Formula 1 and what he’s looking forward to with Porsche.

One thing we were surprised to learn is how low Mark’s heart rate is during race conditions, especially in the 919. He is ice cool!

[Thanks to Tiaan for the tip]

Porsche factory drivers talk about the 919 Hybrid

Mark Webber

Porsche made sure its drivers did more than lap the Paul Ricard circuit over recent days by asking them to tell the world how wonderful the new 919 Hybrid really is. This is what they came up with. That V4 engine sounds alright, too.

Mark Webber is an exceptional man

2014 FIA WEC season trailer

Mark Webber is an exceptional man. It’s true, this video promoting the 2014 FIA WEC season says so. While his F1 mates are starting to get busy, Mark still has a couple of months to go before his new job gets real. We can’t wait!

“I just hope he gets better starts than I did!”

Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo

Mark Webber reckons Australia’s next great F1 hope, Daniel Ricciardo, has the skills to match it with his new Red Bull Racing teammate four-time world champion Sebatsian Vettel. At least as far as qualifying goes, anyway.

“I think he’ll give Seb a real hard time in qualifying,” said Mark. “It’ll be 50:50 in the first year, I reckon.”

Webber says the dramatic changes to F1’s aerodynamic regulations could be the key for Ricciardo.

“I took a few off Seb last year—and the blown floor is gone now,” Webber told Motor Sport magazine. “I think Daniel will be fine, and it certainly won’t hurt him that he’s come through the Red Bull system. I just hope he gets better starts than I did!”

It would be no mean feat for Daniel to fulfill Webber’s qualifying predicition. As Mark says himself, Vettel has few peers when it comes to a one-off flying lap even though he rates Fernando Alonso as the best driver he raced against.

“I always thought Fernando was the best, and I still do—on Sundays,” he said. “On one lap, though, I think Seb’s got him covered—and I’m talking in terms of preparation, not just pace.

“Fernando’s had a lot of poles in his time, but probably age has come into it—you lose a little bit. In the race, though, he’s got more strings to his bow than anyone else, and he’s relentless.

“Seb’s strengths, as we know, are escaping at the start, and running in clean air—when you get these things in clean air now, it’s a whole other story, in terms of tyres and so on. He’s like a computer, isn’t he? His only weakness was always fast corners.”

Some interesting comments from Mark there. And good work from Motor Sport magazine to get that many words from him without one “obviously” in there.

Webber to race with Bernhard and Hartley

Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley

Mark Webber will race with German Timo Bernhard and Kiwi Brendon Hartley in 2014, according to Autosport.

It’s an interesting mix and certainly the pairing of Webber (182cm) and Hartley (184cm) makes sense as both men are relatively tall. Although, Bernhard (172cm) is quite a bit shorter and will require a seat insert you’d imagine.

That leaves Marc Lieb (182cm), Romain Dumas (174cm) and Neel Jani (172cm) to drive the other 919.

Porsche isn’t expected to officially confirm these lineups until the press conference to launch the 2014 WEC season and 24 Hours of Le Mans takes place.

Meanwhile, testing for the 919 hybrid has resumed. Webber, Bernhard and Dumas were in Bahrain last week putting a pair of cars through their paces. One of the cars is brand new, while the other is the 2013 car.

UPDATE: Semi-official confirmation of this news from the GT Porsche twitter account can be seen after the break.
