BMW 2 Series Active Tourer revealed

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

BMW’s first foray into front-wheel drive production is upon us with official details for the 2 Series Active Tourer being released today.

First shown in concept form around 18 months or so it’s a bit of a surprise (to us) to see the car has been handed a 2 Series badge, instead of the adopting 1 Series nomenclature.

For 2 Series Active Tourer, read Mercedes-Benz B Class. This is no surprise because until now BMW had no model to compete with the mid-size Benz for people who buy on badge and not much else.

In the back of the F45 you’ve got 468 litres of luggage space to play with, expandable to 1510 litres with the rear seats folded down. BMW has grabbed a range of three and four cylinder engines from its rack to power the Active Tourer and all are turbocharged, fuel efficient and meet EU6 standards.

And for the BMW customers who understand what front-wheel drive means the brainwashing has commenced:

The front drive axle in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has undergone extensive fine-tuning, ensuring that it endows the car with optimum driving dynamics and wonderfully precise steering feedback. The electromechanical steering and the system’s functional arrangement combine to produce a driving sensation that is devoid of interfering torque steer.

Come to think of it, will any buyers who know what the acronym FWD means want this model anyway? We suggest those most likely to buy the 2 Series Active Tourer have made their decision by the time they get to the BMW acronym.

That said, it’s a smart looking car, it will drive well and should be pretty well built. And for a lot of people that’s all they want in a car.

Paris 2012: BMW Concept Active Tourer in video

BMW Concept Active Tourer

We’ve got some good videos from Paris here, showing the BMW Concept Active Tourer. When viewing the first clip see if you can hear Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales and marketing, say the words “front-wheel drive”. The last clip features Marc Girard, BMW’s interiors boss, talking about the technology found inside the Active Tourer and is well worth watching.

BMW Concept Active Tourer revealed

BMW Concept Active Tourer

Released on Friday the BMW Concept Active Tourer represents your first look at a bona fide front-wheel drive model from the Munich giants. It’s also been referred to as the 1 Series GT.

We’re big fans of the look too. We’re not sure if its simply because we think it rights most of the wrongs seen on the rear-wheel drive F20 1 Series, but the stylish front end reaches a standard that is matched by the rest of the car. If only some of the styling cues were present on the rear-wheel drive model.

In concept form, the Active Tourer is driven by a petrol powered 1.5 litre three cylinder turbo at the front wheels, with electric power at the rear axle. Total power provided by the Plug-in Electric Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) is 140kW. Although, for now, BMW is not going into more detail, so we don’t know the peak numbers offered by the three cylinder powerplant.

That three-pot engine is about to spark life in a number of BMW Group models, including the next-gen MINI. A prototype 1 Series with the 1.5 litre three cylinder has been tested by Autocar and they were impressed by its perky performance, saying “there is little hint of lag, just a lovely linear flow of power.”

When driven in electric-only mode BMW is predicting a range of 30km and the lithium-ion battery can be recharged using a regular domestic socket.

The showcar really ups the ante inside with trick multi-colour displays for both front and rear seat passengers. The “Cool Shade” panorama roof with Suspended Particle Device is also pretty flash.

With obvious front-wheel drive competition from fierce rivals such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz we’re reluctantly impressed by what we’re seeing from BMW’s new world order. Once the transformation from concept to road-going production model is complete, it will be very interesting to see what BMW’s first front-wheel drive model is like to drive.

Here’s hoping it’s as good as it looks.
