2016 Jaguar AWD F-Type revealed

MY16 Jaguar AWD F-Type

Jaguar has revealed details for its MY16 F-Type range which includes the option of a new rear bias all-wheel drive system. Also attracting headlines is the arrival of the F-Type R convertible. And finally, if you want to keep your British roadster experience old skool and rear-wheel drive only, you can get yourself into a V6-powered F-Type S with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Full details on all of that can be accessed below, for now let’s focus on the all-wheel drive system.

“Under normal sub-limit driving conditions, 100 per cent of engine torque is sent to the rear axle,” reads the official press release. “When required, the electromechanically-actuated coupling in the transfer case enables smooth transfer of torque to the front axle—the process is virtually transparent to the driver.”

Any chance a manufacturer gets to own a new acronym is never wasted and the letters of the day for Jag’s all-wheel drive tech are IDD, which stands for Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. Developed in-house by Jaguar the IDD controller harnesses the capabilities of the rear diff, the torque vectoring by braking system and DSC to monitor the yaw rate, steering angle, wheel speed and directional acceleration sensors to optimise torque distribution.

IDD allows for increased parameters to be applied in the selectable driving modes: Normal, Rain and Dynamic. The net result being a greater difference in all three modes compared with the rear-wheel drive models.

There are subtle styling differences for the AWD models, too, although only trainspotters need apply. If that’s you then keep an eye out for a bigger bulge in the bonnet, new vents on the front quarter panels and the more obvious AWD badging at the rear of the car.

The F-Type has created enormous goodwill for Jaguar, thanks to its incredible good looks and generally positive driving experience. Let’s hope the addition of all-wheel drive enhances to this F-Type’s reputation, because lord knows we need more options than the default German marques for quality Euro sportscars.

Jaguar adds all-paw grip to F-Type

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe AWD

When Jaguar rocks up to the LA Auto Show next week it will reveal details of the all-wheel drive system it has added to its highly desirable F-Type range, which will soon have 14 models to choose from, instead of the current six.

If you’re an old skool hang the arse out rear-wheel drive fan that’s cool, you’ll still be able to buy your Jag in RWD. However, if you do feel like some all-paw grip be assured that all won’t be lost.

“Our target with engineering the all-wheel drive F-Type was to maintain the engaging rear-drive character that’s so important to Jaguar sports cars, yet offer even greater dynamic capability,” implores Ian Hoban, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar. “The result is a controllable, exploitable and blisteringly fast performance car in all weather and road conditions.”

So there you have it. All-wheel drive grip in one of the best looking coupés or convertibles money can buy.

In a bid to attract some publicity Jaguar has teamed up with English hillbillies the Bloodhound gang, or something, who want to drive at 1000mph! Details below.

Does my arse look good in this?

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe

This week Chris Harris has a play with the very sexy Jaguar F-Type Coupé. Naturally he’s selected the 404kW supercharged 5.0 V8 model, the F Type R.

He begins by waxing lyrical about the car’s beautiful exterior, in particular it’s rather pleasing backside. But when he turns his eye to the interior he reveals himself to be a man after my own heart when he critiques the selection of typefaces used. Brilliant, Chris, just brilliant!

Anyway, despite its 1650kg heft, he quite likes the car. Click through to find out why.

Autocar drives the Jaguar F-Type R Coupé

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe

Suffering through those Super Bowl commercials reminded us we’d not made the time to watch Steve Sutcliffe’s video review of the very desirable Jaguar F-Type R Coupé. We’ve watched it now, and you can too if you haven’t already.

Sutcliffe was at the press launch held at the Circuit de Catalunya and had a merry old time testing the limits of adhesion and wear rate of the R Coupé’s rear tyres.

Half his luck!

Faster versions of Jaguar F-Type Coupé likely

Jaguar F-Type Coupe

If you’ve been seduced by the stunning good looks of the Jaguar F-Type Coupé but are so greedy to think the 404kW R model is not fast enough then you’ll just have to bide your time.

Ian Callum, Jaguar design director, hinted to Autocar that higher performing RS and RS GT models are likely.

“Our obligation is to maximise the opportunity in the car in every direction,” Callum said. “It is clear that the platform is very capable. Whatever the powertrain, the body will work with it.”

Callum’s comments were supported in a more direct fashion by Steven de Ploey, Jaguar global marketing director, who said: “We’ve shot all our bullets on day one in the past. We now have a well balanced model cycle plan for each car, upward, downwards and sideways. With the F-Type, the RS is one of those possibilities.”

Jaguar F-Type Coupé on show in LA and Tokyo

Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Jaguar brings word its F-Type Coupé will be revealed at a secret location in Los Angeles on 19 November. The following day the F-Type Coupé will make its show debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, before also being on show at the LA show after globe spins around a bit more.

Based on the very sexy 2011 C-X16 concept, the tintop F-Type will mostly be a cut and paste job from the convertible version. We can’t wait to see more!

Jaguar F-Type R coupé looks the business

Jaguar F-Type R coupe

Jaguar has been enjoying the sun at the Nürburgring with its new F-Type R coupé. Even with the dramatic disguise wrapped around its body the F-Type coupé still looks fantastic. Based on the F-Type convertible that’s hardly a surprise as the roofless version looks ace too.

What we like most about this hardtop version is that it is expected to debut in R guise with a 540hp (400kW) 5.0 litre supercharged V8. Ceramic brakes should help keep all that power in check; look at the brakes on this test mule, they are serious!

It’s expected we’ll have all the answers on the F-Type coupé before the year is out.

Jaguar F-Type coupe coming to Goodowod FoS?

Jaguar F-Type coupe prototype

On the same day it’s officially announced “an exciting new design study based on the Jaguar F-Type convertible sports car” will debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Fesitval of Speed new spy shots of the F-Type coupe emerge. Hmm, pretty easy to put one and one together on this one, don’t you think. Check out the gallery from Pistonspy using the link below.

We got a preview of what to expect back in May when drawings of the F-Type coupe were leaked. That simply confirmed that the 2011 C-X16 Hybrid concept is pretty much what the new coupe is going to look like. And that’s a very good thing.

The underpinnings of the coupe will be based on the F-Type convertible, of course, and that would appear to also be a very good thing. Talk of V8s, superchargers and special editions with lots of Rs added to the model designation is always exciting, don’t you think!

We look forward to bringing you more from Jaguar over the coming week.

Jaguar F-Type coupé drawings leaked

Jaguar F-Type coupe patent drawing

As Australia readies itself for the arrival of the Jaguar F-Type soft top, leaked patent drawings have given us a look ahead to the F-Type coupé. Well, actually, they’ve taken us back to the 2011 C-X16 concept. Which is no bad thing at all, by the way.

This F-Type is one of the few cars that nails its design with or without a roof. It’s a very nice looking car and nothing has been lost in translation here. The long bonnet works, to svelte roofline works, the chiselled rear flanks work and even the large rear window, which some say has been inspired by the E-Type coupé, looks the business. Although it doesn’t look much like the rear window on the overrated E-Type to us.

Overall, though, the tintop F-Type just works!

The F-Type coupé is scheduled for sales release in 2014 so if we’re lucky we could see an official reveal later this year, at Frankfurt in September perhaps.

Jaguar reveals C-X16 hybrid concept

Jaguar C-X16 concept

Jaguar has given us an official preview of its C-X16 hybrid sportscar ahead of next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Looks pretty flash, don’t you reckon.

Mainstream power peaks at a healthy 280kW (380PS) courtesy of a supercharged 3.0 litre V6. Thanks to that blower torque tops out at 450Nm. Green power can be accessed with a F1-style push to pass button on the steering wheel. Allowing sir to tap into a further 70kW/235Nm of electric power.

The C-X16 reaches 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. The combination of hybrid power and an 8-speed auto offers good in-gear acceleration and CO2 emissions are a reasonably green 165g/km; green for a sportscar that is.

Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars like his latest creation. “Jaguars have always been dramatically different. With the C-X16 we have moved the current award-winning design language on to the next generation, creating a car that is the very essence of future Jaguar performance,” he said.
