Is this evidence of an Audi RS1?

Audi RS1 trademark illustration

A series of illustrations lodged by Audi to the European trademark office have recently be revealed. The understated monotone images could be evidence of firm plans for an RS1 über-hatch.

Alas, they could equally apply to the already launched limited-edition A1 quattro. For now there’s not a lot of concrete info to go on. All we know is we’d very much like to see Audi slash the cost of its exorbitant A1 quattro and offer it as a bona fide production model wearing RS1 badges.

Yeah, not really likely, is it.

184kW for the Audi RS1?

Audi RS1 prototype?

A recent screen grab from the Audi parts catalogue ‘ETKA’ lists a 184kW/250PS Audi A1 quattro. Let’s assume for a moment that the listing is 100% accurate; that’s quite a lot of power for a little A1.

Best guesses would say that any such engine would be found wearing an S1 or RS1 badge. We reckon 184kW would be around the mark for an RS1. Any more than that and it’d start chewing into S3 territory. Expect an S1, should Audi make it, to have an engine spec more like a Golf GTI at 155kW.

We may not know for a while if this rumour is correct, but we very much like what we’re hearing.

Is this really an undisguised Audi RS1?

Audi RS1 prototype?

Autoevolution brings a great series of pics of what they claim is an Audi RS1. This follows a couple of days after new RS1 speculation emerged.

Take a look at the body kit of the car lapping at the Nürburgring. The front spoiler certainly has a genuine OEM feel about it. Even the large rear wing, while a little over the top, looks legitimate.

We just wonder if Audi really would send out the RS1 so naked given they are yet to publicly announce plans for such a model. Could this be an extreme S-Line bodykit, or even a styling kit from an aftermarket manufacturer? The blurred out number plates might hold a few clues.

There are certainly plenty of signs and hints an RS1 is in the pipeline and we very much hope this car is the real deal. We think it looks great and with the likelihood it will pack a 250hp punch (or thereabouts) we can’t wait to see the final product.

Audi RS1 is getting warmer

Audi RS1 prototype

At this year’s Wörthersee show Audi unwrapped the awesome 370kW A1 clubsport concept car. Not long after they told us Ingolstadt referred to the car as the RS1. Now we have some proof that the car is genuinely being considered.

The car you see above was photographed at Audi headquarters. If you follow the source link below you’ll see more pics. Okay, sure, it’s probably nothing more than an Audi Exclusive creation. But, it does have a quattro drivetrain (as evidenced in the pics) and, well, the rear sway bar wears a sticker with “RS1” on it (see inset).

Of course, there’s nothing official from Audi at the moment, but we very much like the idea of a hi-po RS1 pocket rocket so we’ll take any chance we can to believe such a car will be made.

At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show it was revealed by Volkswagen they would power their new Polo R WRC with a new 300hp 1.6 litre engine. And we reckon right about now you’re thinking what we’re thinking.

“Internally we refer to this car as the RS1”

Audi A1 clubsport

These are the words of Audi head of design Stefan Sielaff, as reported by What Car. The car he is referring to, of course, is the bonkers A1 clubsport, complete with 370kW, revealed at Wörthersee a few days ago.

Sielaff continued the RS1 tease by saying the A1’s engine bay wouldn’t need to be modified to fit the 2.5 litre five cylinder should the car go into series production. It’s unlikely any road going model would be released sporting the full 370kW, but even the standard 250kW found in the TT RS would be most welcome.

The A1 clubsport is 400kg lighter than its production siblings, and while that may be a stretch too far if an RS1 is made, Sielaff reckons a weight saving of 200kg could be achieved.

Consider our appetite whet!
