Porsche 911 GT3: A feast for the senses?

991 Porsche 911 GT3

I’m not sure about anybody else reading this, but there’s nothing I’d love more than to have the ability to spec a 911 GT3 to my liking, place the order and wait with increasing anticipation for the day I was able to drive it off the showroom floor.

My own GT3. It would be a dream come true.

In this video Andreas Preuninger, Mr Porsche GT3, tells us a little about the development of the car. It’s a feast for the senses he reckons.

991 Porsche 911 GT3

Autocar is the latest mag to get its hands on the all-new 991 911 GT3. And we’re going to spoil the outcome for you by saying that Steve Sutcliffe concludes his review with the words: “I think this is the best sportscar I’ve ever driven.”

As if telling you that is going to stop you from watching the clip for yourself!

Porsche 911: 991 compared to 997 in pictures

Porsche 911_991 v 997

Here’s a pictorial comparison of the new 991 Porsche 911 against the well loved 997.2 model it replaces.

One of the first things you notice in profile view is how the 991 appears a bit sleeker and lower. The more dramatically raked front and rear glass is a small, but definite improvement.

At the front the 997 gets our tick for having less fussy LED daytime running lights. Even the headlights, while very similar, look nicer in the old car. Although, we reckon Porsche has done a good job in the lower spoiler area on the all-new 911.

When comparing the backsides of the two 911s we call it in favour of the 991. We like the sharper look of the new rear lights. The quad-tipped exhausts also look better, despite being a bit clichéd these days. The new model also has a more refined finish around the lower bumper area. Our only concern is how the rear cooling vents look in profile view; they stick up a bit too much. That’d be function ruling over form, of course, so we can happily accept that.

So there you have it, as expected the exterior of the new 911 doesn’t appear to have changed too much, but we’d still call it a successful progression. You can click on the image above for a larger version of the comparison grid, or check out the individual images below, including interior photos.

Another 991 Porsche 911 rendering

991 Porsche 911 rendering

French website L’Automobile brings us some new renderings of the upcoming 991 Porsche 911. The front view is pretty much the same as we saw last August. This time, though, you get a look at the backside of the new 991.

Most other details for the next-gen 911 remain as reported last year. So, we can expect the wheelbase to be increased by 75mm or so, allowing for improved engine mounting and rear seat room. A weight loss of some 50kg is anticipated, along with a better aero package and the use of efficient technologies such as stop-start and brake regeneration. The interior layout will draw heavily from the Panamera, as well.

The latest speculation suggests the 991 will debut later this year at the Frankfurt IAA in September.

New 991 Porsche 911 spy shots

Porsche 991 911 spy shot

Autoblog brings us a great gallery of images of the 991 Porsche 911 coupé and convertible. Based on these pics, which show development cars mostly free of camouflage, the next-generation 911 is going to be a very nice looking car. A better looking 997, really. Which is just what we have come to expect from Porsche.

With any luck we’ll see the 991 revealed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show (3–13 March).

Early details for next Porsche 911

Porsche 991 911 rendering

The new 2011 Porsche 911 (991 model code) will be a ground-up transformation over the existing 997 model. It will be up to 50kg lighter, feature all-new suspension geometry and the rear axle will be pushed back by around 75mm. This will offer more interior space, but will also afford a more optimum mounting position for the engine. Better handling and increased overall stability the result.

Improved aerodynamics, stop-start technology and a brake regeneration system will help improve efficiency by around 10%, despite the inevitable (albeit modest) power gains. It has been reported the 991 911 will feature a 7-speed manual transmission, which has been derived from the PDK unit.

Inside, the 991 will draw its look from the Panamera, including easier to read dials and a wider centre console. Overall, the new 911 will be a more comfortable place to be.
