The Golf GTI – six generations

VW Golf GTI - Wheels liftout

Wheels magazine is celebrating the local launch of the new Golf GTI with this great addition to their November issue. You can read the liftout online by clicking on the image above. I also understand the hard copy version will be included on newsstands with the regular magazine.

If nothing else, this brochure does a great job of detailing all the new aspects of the Mk6 Golf GTI and, by covering all previous five generations of GTI, it gives a solid insight into the history of the GTI legend.

Great job Wheels, thank you.

MINI CHALLENGE 2009 – Round 6, Race 3

Last weekend the MINI Challenge gang tore around the streets of Surfers Paradise. Race 3 was broadcast live across the nation by Channel 7 and if you missed the action, you need worry no longer, because here it is for your viewing pleasure.

Being a tight street circuit the overtaking opportunities weren’t great, but it made for a pretty tightly packed bunch and the cars looked great going through the chicanes. There’s also some nice on board footage captured, including the inside left front wheel arch of Beric Lynton’s car in the first clip, while the second clip shows Glenn Seton’s fancy footwork inside the über-star car.

As usual, the footage is split into two clips, one above, one below. Highlights from this round will be televised on 14 November.

MINI E – looking for a plug down under

MINI E - The electric, zero emissions MINI

According to a report in The Age BMW Australia is making preparations to bring the MINI E down under. The all electric-powered MINI has been operating on trial lease agreements in the United States since late 2008. The MINI E is also currently being evaluated in both Germany and England. Now, it looks like we could be the next country to flick the switch.

BMW Australia’s PR and Corporate Communications Manager, Toni Andreevski, confirmed plans are underway, “The first step is to try to get a sample car in the country, a MINI E, in Australia as soon as possible.

“It hasn’t been finalised yet, we are still negotiating with Munich but it looks very promising and we are quite confident of having a car in Australia around the middle of next year.”

With a range of around 240km and a heavy duty 150kW of power on offer BMW Australia are keen to test the car in demanding Australian conditions.

“We’d like to get the engineers some experience in Australia with the car so that if there is anything that they need to learn from an Australian perspective then they take that into account when they are developing future concepts,” Andreevski told The Age.

Andreevski hopes the MINI will attract some political clout, “The idea to bring the car to Australia is also to get some politicians behind the wheels so they can experience really one of the cars that is in larger scale use at the moment.”

More on this story as it develops.

Top Gear track record broken (unofficially)

Ultima GTR720 at Dunsfold Park

Boutique British sportscar manufacturer Ultima Sports Ltd have smashed the track record at the Dunsfold Park track used by Top Gear.

Continually bemused that the show won’t allow their Ultima GTR720 to be tested by The Stig because of the “must be able to drive over a speed bump rule” the chaps from Ultima have taken matters into their own hands.

At the first available opportunity they hired the Top Gear track and drove the GTR720 from their factory to prove their “road legal” point. On arrival they knocked off an impressive 0.8 seconds from the record spectacularly set by Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari FXX at the start of Series 13. The best time recorded by the FXX was 1:10.7. The Ultima GTR720 easily bettered Schumacher’s effort setting a time of 1:09.9.

Well done them! Now, I wonder if this will relieve them of the seemingly massive chip on their shoulders, haha.

Two clips of the lap can be seen after the jump, the first fetauring absurdly biased commentary and the second, filmed in car, gives a great view of the full Top Gear track. If you want more info on this story, check out the Ultima website.

MINI CHALLENGE 2009 – Round 5 TV highlights

Round 5 of the Australian MINI Challenge was held at Phillip Island back in mid-September. Race 1 was covered live, while this highlights package shows snippets from the first two races, before showing Race 3 in full. There’s also a good mid-season re-cap at the start of the broadcast that includes interviews with a lot of the drivers.

Robbie Maddison was the über-star car driver, and you can almost see his improvement by the lap. He made a great showing, taking it right up to series leader Paul Stokell for most of the final race.

Overall this was one of the most entertaining MINI Challenge rounds to date, with close racing throughout the field. Nathan Caratti managed a clean sweep of all three races, but, again, suffered at the hands of officialdom with a query remaining over his results. Sadly, for Paul Stokell he had a dreadful weekend, he failed to finish the first two races and then limped over the line in ninth place in Race 3. He still maintained his series lead, but the margin back to his rivals has been drastically reduced.

The footage is split over two clips and you can catch the second clip, along with the series leaderboard after the jump.

VIDEO: Snail’s pace

This clip is currently orbiting the blogosphere, so why not let it drop in for a spell at AUSmotive HQ. What you’re about to see is the glory of super slow-mo technology. Various forms of motorbike and motor racing categories have been captured and set to music. A special note of thanks to the creator for actually choosing some music that suits the subject matter. Most amateur YouTube compilations have bone jarring death metal pounding out your speakers. Thankfully, if you’re an old fart like me, you’ll enjoy this one.

New Golf GTI – Australian details released

Mk6 Golf GTI

There’s been sightings of new Golf GTIs around the country for over two months now. There was a pricing leak almost two weeks ago. And, as posted earlier today, the press launch is happening as we speak. Finally, then, the wait is over and Australian details of the new Golf GTI have been officially announced.

Nothing much has changed since Volkswagen AG announced the GTI’s European release in March this year. That means you’ll see a 155kW/280Nm 2.0 TSI four cylinder under the bonnet. There’s also the familiar GTI 6 speed transmission options—manual or DSG. Unlike the previous Mk5 model, Australian buyers will be able to order three or five door configurations from launch.

New for a GTI in Australia is the electronic diff, badged as XDL, which is supposed to offer improved grip and reduce understeer. It may well do both, but only the driving experience will reveal how effectively the diff intervenes with the driver’s instructions. Also seen for the first time in a GTI is the option of an Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) system. This is just a fancy way of saying the car has three electronically controlled suspension settings—normal, comfort and sport.

Put all that together and with a heavy right foot you should be able to sprint to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds. With a lighter right foot your target combined fuel consumption figure is an impressive 7.7l/100km (down from 8.2l/100km). CO2 emissions have been similarly improved, falling to 180g/km (down from 198g/km).

From the outside you will notice the revised linear front grille treatment and vertical foglights pushed to the edges of the lower airdam. You’ll also notice darkened rear tailights and the twin exhaust tips, again pushed to the edge of the rear diffuser they are housed in. You’ll also see that the less than attractive 17″ ‘Denver’ alloy wheels (as shown above) are still standard fare for Australian delivered GTIs. But, the pricing is the same as the outgoing model, so if the alloys were the thing that had to give, then perhaps that is a small price to pay. Larger 18″ ‘Detroit’ alloys (shown on the Tornado Red five door after the jump) can be optioned for a reasonable $1200 and this is clearly the course to take if your budget allows.

Something you may not immediately notice is the new GTI has been widened by 27mm, which allows a wider front track. This should aid handling and cornering stability. VW engineers also have you sitting noticeably lower inside the cabin. It may only be a small amount, but it all goes to helping lower the car’s centre of gravity. It also gives the interior a cavernous and spacious feel.

There are five colours in the range—Candy White, Tornado Red, Reflex Silver and Deep Black Pearl Effect carry over from the Mk5, while Carbon Steel metallic is a new addition.

Safety is as assured as it can be, with the Golf being adorned with all the latest gadgets, including ESP and seven airbags (there’s even one for the driver’s knee). The Golf range has been awarded a 5 star crash rating from both the EuroNCAP and ANCAP bodies.

The hills are alive…

Volkswagen Golf VI GTI - Australian press launch

The new Mk6 Golf GTI is being presented to the Australian motoring media today in the Victorian Alps. This is good and bad news, really. It’s good news because the latest GTI is almost ready for public consumption (in fact, your local dealer probably has a few in storage right now), but bad news because I have not made it to Volkswagen’s invite list, yet!

So, you’ll have to check out CarAdvice for updates on the local launch and early drive reports.

The pricing of the GTI range that was revealed on AUSmotive earlier this month has proven to be 100% correct (thanks to my-gti.com for that).

No doubt there will be more details coming from the Volkswagen PR machine in the coming days, so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, just think how much fun it would be driving the GTI across some of Australia’s best driving roads with little to no traffic getting in the way. Or, around Eastern Creek, perhaps!

Golf VI GTI – Australian Manufacturer’s List Pricing*

  • 3 Door, 6 speed Manual – $38,990
  • 3 Door, 6 speed DSG – $41,490
  • 5 Door, 6 speed Manual – $40,490
  • 5 Door, 6 speed DSG – $42,990

*Excludes dealer delivery fees and all other on road costs.

Koenigsegg Oh the humanity

This one’s gonna bruise

Koenigsegg CCX crash

The New York owner of this Koenigsegg CCX has just lived through his worst nightmare. His car was crashed by somebody else. Y’know, it would be one thing if a thief stole the car and crashed it. You don’t tend to trust a thief all that much, so as difficult as it would be, you could probably still deal with that scenario.

Imagine, then, how hard it would be to reconcile the situation if it was some schmuck from your local Koenigsegg dealership that did this to your pride and joy. It gets worse, too. Not only did the prize clown do that to the CCX, he also took down a Porsche 911 GT2 in the process.

Perhaps the only satisfaction from this ordeal is imagining how tight the sphincter of the culprit would have been when he made the phone call to the car’s owner. Ouch!

Mazda3 – Everything you ever wanted to know

Mazda 3 digital media information

If you are a fan of the Mazda3, or just like having a sticky beak at the information manufacturers put together for their cars, then you will love this. Click on the image above to view an online digital brochure of the Mazda3 which has been prepared by Mazda UK. It includes pictures, video and information for all the models in the current UK range, including the goes-pretty-damn-fast MPS model.

Normally, I would have thought sharing information like this in the public arena was a bit frowned upon, but the brochure includes a drop down menu encouraging readers to share the link across various forms of social media, so, well, I thought I may as well share it with you guys, too.

Sixth sense

Sebastien Loeb - WRC 2009

The Citröen Racing partnership of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena secured their sixth successive WRC title overnight by winning the final rally of the year, the Rally of Great Britain. The rally, set in the Welsh countryside, was a tight battle between Loeb/Elena and Ford’s Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen pairing, and provided a snapshot of the season itself.

Hirvonen started the rally with a one point lead over Loeb in the title race, but it wasn’t enough. The Frenchman won the race, the Finn was second. Loeb’s victory reversed the drivers’ title scenario and he grasped the world championship from Hirvonen by a single point (93 points to 92).

Loeb had established a 30 second lead at the start of the final day, but desperate driving from Hirvonen reduced the deficit to 18 seconds after the first two stages of the day.

On the second last stage the title was all but decided when a bonnet pin on Hirvonen’s car broke and forced the bonnet to open. Hirvonen had to stop and take the dramatic option of tearing off the bonnet completely before he could continue. This gave Loeb a lead of almost 90 seconds and the chance to drive with caution on the final stage to clinch his sixth world crown.

“There were so much pressure right up to the end of the rally,” said Sébastien Loeb amidst a swarm of microphones. “We had a good start to the year, but then encountered a few problems. However, we got back on top of things just before this rally. Finally, we’ve managed to win the title again, on the penultimate stage. Mikko didn’t give up and I had to push right to the finish. It’s never easy to compare one title with another, but I think this is the best one in terms of the sporting battle we had.”
