Webber just misses F1’s DHL Fastest Lap trophy

Mark Webber

Australia’s Mark Webber came desperately close to securing a season’s best F1 award this year by finishing equal first with Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastian Vettel in the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy award. Both drivers claimed three fastest laps in season 2009, however, Vettel was awarded the trophy on countback by completing three second fastest laps, to Webber’s one.

Webber went into the final race at Abu Dhabi ahead of Vettel and the young German had to wait until the second last lap to tie with Webber and force the countback.

“I am very pleased. It means a lot to me to have my achievements recognised in this way. I wanted to post the fastest lap of the race, which is why, just before the finish, I really put my foot to the floor again.” The 22-year-old Vettel added with a laugh, “It was more than worth it.”

Scirocco – R for reviews

Volkswagen Scirocco R

English motor mags Autocar and Car have filed their initial drive reports on Volkswagen’s 195kW Scirocco R. With all that power going to the front wheels only, will the feisty ‘Roc be a blithering mess or a competent B-road balltearer?

Autocar: “Keeping the Scirocco R front-drive has kept weight in check, and there’s no denying that power figure, so this is a car that feels entirely at home in the company of mega-hatches like the Focus and the old Megane R26.”

Car: “VW seems to be enjoying a strong run of sporting excellence at the moment, after losing the plot in the 1990s. The Scirocco R is another reminder they can build cracking sports cars at democratic prices. Bravo.”

While it seems unlikely that we will see the Scirocco in Australia in the short term, there are enough whisperings around to ensure all hope is not lost. Indeed, a sole Scirocco model lineup consisting of the R only may be Australia’s best option. If you’re keen on seeing this car in your local Volkswagen showroom then the best I can suggest is to contact VW and ask them “Where the bloody hell is my Scirocco?!”.

Toyota quits Formula One

Toyota quits F1

Toyota has confirmed it will be the latest manufacturer to withdraw from Formula One. The automotive giant follows BMW and Honda out of the sport, and intends to “move forward in developing exciting production vehicles”, such as the Lexus LFA.

Toyota’s F1 program began in 2002 and while they secured 13 podium finishes and scored points in 87 races during that time, they failed to achieve the ultimate success of a Formula One race win. A cruel blow, no doubt, to the proud company.

Toyota Motor Corporation says they will do their best to secure the futures of their F1 employees, which they have rather quaintly referred to as a possible “inconvenience”. Quite!

This news may come as as a welcome relief to the remnants of the BMW Sauber team. As it stood there was no room on the grid for them in 2010. The former BMW backed team is hoping to continue as Sauber F1 and if they can secure a future they would be in pole position to fill the void left by Toyota.

Toyota’s full statement can be read after the jump.

UPDATE 5 November: The speech given by Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation can be read below.

Anything you can do…

While browsing YouTube I discovered that Volkswagen Australia may have learnt a thing or two from their UK brethren about how to launch a new GTI.

Here is some behind the scenes footage of the UK launch of Volkswagen’s latest GTI, held at the Millbrook Proving Ground.

Guaranteed To Deliver

Volkswagen Golf GTD

While AUSmotive has been in the midst of GTI mania recently, fans of oil burners have reason to rejoice too. The Golf GTD now appears to be a certainty for Australian delivery. The only question that remaining is the arrival date.

According to the SMH.com.au the GTD will be here later this year, “Volkswagen Australia is planning to introduce a diesel version of its iconic GTI hot-hatch by the end of 2009.”

Hmm, I’ll believe that when I see it. At best, I reckon that date is a typo and should have read by the end of 2010. In recent times I have heard of two possible dates for GTD arrivals. One indicated some time around June 2010, while the other snippet that came my way was a cautious line suggesting the GTD would arrive before the end of next year.

The GTD is basically a Golf GTI with a diesel engine. The badge first appeared way back on the Mk1 Golf, so while the model may not have current cachet, it does have a proud history.

The pics shown in this article are sourced from Volkswagen UK, so enjoy them for what they are, it is highly unlikely that Australia will see any three door Golf GTDs.

Everything else should be as expected, though, which means a 125kW 2.0 TDI engine capable of reaching 100km/h in 8.1 seconds. Naturally, the GTD will boast impressive torque and Australian customers will be able to brag that the GTD has more torque than an Audi S3, with 350Nm in the diesel compared to 330Nm found in Australian delivered S3s.

Perhaps one unintended hurdle to GTD sales might come in the form of the GTI itself. Volkswagen’s tweaks to the latest GTI engine have seen claimed fuel consumption drop to 7.6l/100km in DSG equipped cars. While the GTD’s figure of 5.3l/100km easily betters the GTI, it can’t be escaped that Australia, by and large, still prefers petrol powered cars and the GTI is hardly a gas guzzler. That said, sales of diesel models in the Golf Mk5 range were very healthy.

The Mk5 Golf GT Sport TDI was a barrel of laughs courtesy of massive usable torque (see previous Drive Thru report). One would expect with all the trimmings of the GTI now available that the Mk6 GTD will definitely deliver, as well.

GTI Advanced Driving Academy – Eastern Creek

GTI Advanced Driving Academy - Eastern Creek

When notifications first started being sent out for the GTI Advanced Driving Academy I was not on the list. I wasn’t happy! But, in the end I needn’t have worried as I scored a place in the second round of offers. Even the 8am start time on a Monday morning didn’t put me off. Sure, I would have to leave my home in Canberra at 5am, but the chance of sampling a fleet of new Mk6 Golf GTIs around Eastern Creek was one worth grabbing with both hands.

Hang on a minute. I’ve been to a manufacturer test day before, and have had a few mates attend similar days, as well. Surely, with the new GTI just released Volkswagen will protect their new cars and make us treat them with kid gloves.

I had talked myself into believing the GTI Advanced Driving Academy would be nothing more than a three hour sell job.

Well, I was wrong. It was nothing like I expected. Yet, at the same time I was deadly accurate—it was indeed a three hour sell job—but only because Volkswagen had the confidence to let their new product do the talking.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – opening in 2010

Ferrari World - Abu Dhabi

Is there anything that the United Arab Emirates cannot offer? Well, apart from environmental sustainability, that is.

The latest mega project for the country is this Ferrari World theme park, currently being built on Yas Island. Fittingly, the completely over the top, but oh so cool, extravaganza even points itself to the neighbouring Yas Marina Grand Prix Circuit. The complex is due to open in 2010.

At over 200,000 square metres, and with architecture inspired by Ferarri body parts, this Disneyland for revheads will cater for the wildest dreams of anyone slightly interested in Italy’s most evocative sports car manufacturer.

As well as every interactive and interpretive display imaginable, Ferrari World will also be home to the world’s fastest roller coaster. Said to match the thrill of riding in a Formula One car the rollercoaster can reach speeds in excess of 200km/h.

For more on this crazy piece of architecture and trimuph of marketing, check out the press release after the jump.

Drive Thru: Volkswagen Golf GTI

Volkswagen Mk6 Golf GTI

After losing its way in the mid-late 1990s the GTI badge relinquished the credibility gained with the first two GTIs. The fifth generation GTI, launched in 2004, has been widely acclaimed all over the globe. It won back respect for the GTI, a respect the badge so richly deserves. As a result, this new Mk6 Golf GTI has some big boots to fill. So, it was with great anticipation that I took the keys to Volkswagen’s latest hot-hatch.

Without giving away too much, too early, it’s safe to say that, in its sixth generation, the GTI legend is in very safe hands.

Before I expand on the driving experience, it is worth a cursory glance at the steps that led to the creation of the Mk6 Golf. Normally, this would not need addressing, but the step from Mk5 to Mk6 came about quicker than Volkswagen had hoped, and as a result, the jump between these two generations is one of the shortest in the model’s 35 year lifespan.

As noted, the Mk5 Golf, and especially the GTI, was a very fine motor car. However, as good as it was, the profit margins were too slim and, ultimately, this was a thorn in Volkswagen’s side. Therefore, the Mk6 model roll out was brought forward. Across the range major improvements in the new Golf have been delivered through engine selections and available options, rather than any major mechanical upgrades. There have been some geometry changes, of course—the car has a wider front track and the driver sits a bit lower in the car—but, overall, the chassis is heavily based on the Mk5 Golf.

UPDATE 3 November: Refer to “On the track” section below to read how the GTI handled the GTI Advanced Driving Academy.

If you tolerate this then your children will be next

You may remember the earlier news that saw the worldwide BMW Z4 ‘art of driving’ television commercial pulled from Australian screens. I stated at the time that, as a sign of protest against this ludicrous decision, AUSmotive will be running the above footage, which is featured in the commercial, on the first day of every month for the rest of the year.

The fact that regulations are in place that deem this ad inappropriate is a sad indictment on the state of the road safety debate in this country. The fact that some members of society are unable separate entertainment from reality is equally disturbing. That they are given a voice is mind boggling.

Clearly, the title of this article is tongue in cheek and is designed to highlight the level of paranoia that exists in wowsers when presented with the notion that driving can be fun.

A reminder, too, that you can watch the ad in full on the BMW Australia website. Even better, check out BMW’s Expression of Joy Z4 microsite.

Google Maps enters Sat Nav free for all

Google Maps Navigation

Internet giant Google have recently entered the world of mobile phone satellite navigation with their new product Google Maps Navigation. Currently developed for use on Android 2.0 phones the system has pretty much every feature you could wish for in a sat nav product.

There’s live traffic updates, turn-by-turn directions, voice control and, of course, access to Google Maps and all its features, including Street View. Then there’s the price—it’s free!

That’s the good news. The catch is Google Maps Navigation relies on a mobile’s internet connection. The immediate questions that arise surround reliabilty and speed of access to Google’s data. There is the possibility of caching relevant maps to the phone, but that is not available just yet.

Whatever the current shortfalls you can bet the bottom dollar from the likes of Garmin and TomTom that Google is already working hard to resolve them. Mind, not really sure what the might of Google could do if the draconian Victorian Government gets its way and bans the use of mobile phones for in-car navigation.

There’s heaps more coverage on this product is available across the net, as you’d expect, here’s an article from the Telegraph.co.uk that gives a good introduction.

There’s also a cheesy video from Google available below that explains how the system works. Interestingly, you don’t actually hear any of the turn-by-turn directions that the phone is supposed to make. Oh, anyone who believes that Michael really is standing outside the front of the de Young Museum is easily fooled!

Wheels on each corner

MINI - Wheels on each croner

As you will most likely be aware MINI is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2009. As one of the many aspects to the birthday bash MINI have commissioned this excellent short film that has brief interviews with people from all walks of life and from all across the globe.

Yes, it’s nothing more than the MINI marketing machine pulling at our heart strings, but if you get what a MINI is you will love the clip.

There is also quite a strong Australian flavour, too, with some classic Mini owners featured—including a couple who have had their Mini for 45 years—and there is some MINI Challenge snippets filmed at Oran Park, as well.

The film runs for just under 16 minutes, so put the kettle on and make a brew, then take the jump below, and enjoy the show.
