Sex sells

Sex, selling and Toyota are not necessarily three words you would expect to see in the same sentence. But, thanks to the current Toyota “Clever Film” competition that’s exactly what the above ad uses to, erm, flog the Toyota Yaris, of all things.

The basic concept may not be especially original, and it does border on being a bit twee with some of its puns, but overall the script is well written and has been delivered well by a believable cast. Just don’t expect to see this on your TV screens anytime soon. It’s a little bit saucy.

Hans Stuck: Volkswagen is thinking about F1

Hans-Joachim Stuck

Volkswagen ambassador and former Formula One driver Hans-Joachim Stuck says the German auto giant is flirting with the idea of becoming an F1 engine supplier. “If you’re the world’s largest manufacturer is natural that we’re thinking about [F1], but not before 2012,” he said.

New rules which are set to change the way the sport is run are attractive to a company like Volkswagen. Speaking to Autosport, Stuck explains, “We’re looking for innovative things, and Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. Two years ago there was some talk that Volkswagen is going to buy the Red Bull F1 team, which we didn’t need to buy. Why should we stick with one team if we can give our engines to more teams?”

Stuck believes that purchasing a team is too costly and doesn’t suit a large manufacturer, whereas the ability to be a supplier for multiple teams has more appeal for all involved, “It’s like Formula 1 in my days. We had March, we had Lotus, and we had Ford engines. Then Renault came in as engine manufacturer, with a formidable engine. This was perfect.

“I followed Formula One for the last seven years with BMW and I always asked myself on the grid, with only 20 cars, what if we could have 30 cars? Now we’re getting back to this.”

While F1 is the ultimate, Volkswagen has enjoyed success in feeder categories of late, as well as being the current Dakar Rally champions. Of more relevance, are the British and German F3 titles recently won by Volkswagen powered cars.

MINI CHALLENGE 2009 – Round 7 TV highlights

The penultimate round of the Australian MINI Challenge was held at Western Australia’s Barbagallo Raceway last weekend. Like last year, the event involved a race ending incident for Uber-Star driver Leanne Tander. The accident happened early in Race 3, and was the precursor to a disastrous restart that saw many in the field confused by the starters orders.

Confusion on the grid is never a good thing, but when back half the field are going all out, and the front half are hesitating, or just standing still, well, it will always get ugly.

Staying out of trouble, though, was series leader Paul Stokell who pretty sealed the title with a solid showing across the three races. Local driver Nathan Caratti was the star of the weekend, winning two races and finishing second in the other.

Highlights of the three races can be seen in two clips, one above, the other after the break. Interestingly, some of the commentary for Race 3 has been re-done post event. This is most noticeable with the Leanne Tander-Aaron Caratti crash. Maybe this has always happened for the highlights shows, but I haven’t noticed it before. Full coverage and original commentary from Race 3 can be seen here.

The 2009 MINI Challenge reaches its conclusion next weekend at the Sydney 500, so make sure you keep an eye on your local TV guides for Channel 7’s live coverage.

Driverless Audi TTS

An Audi TTS is being modified to tackle one of the world’s most daunting roads, the 9390ft Pikes Peak Hill Climb. nothing so newsworthy about that until you realise this car does not have a driver behind the wheel. The car currently has a whole bunch of driverless gizmos stuffed in the boot, but the propeller heads from Stanford University preparing the car plan to use real time Java algorithms to replace the driver. Live telemetry updates can be transmitted to and from the car as far as 30km away.

Dr Burkhard Huhnke, executive director of the Electronics Research Laboratory, Stanford University, said, “We believe that developing a car that can perform as well and respond as rapidly as a ‘professional’ driver, like a race or rally driver, will eventually be able to drive its way around incidents in a way that a ‘normal’ driver couldn’t.

“While a less experienced driver may freeze or make the wrong ‘correction’, the Autonomous TTS would be able to take over or guide the driver to escape from a critical situation. It could also compensate if a driver is inattentive to conditions or distracted but of course, it won’t prevent all accidents.”

While we must take Dr Huhnke’s words at face value, one doesn’t have to stretch their imagination too far to see how this technology, coupled with GPS-linked speed limiters, could make driving, well, a thing of the past.

Such an outcome would mean that classic films like Climb dance could be all we have to show our grand children to explain what fun driving used to be.

Don’t you forget about me

Audi Quattro

Another great TouTube clip here from DTMEnthusiast. Not so much DTM goodness in this one, though. No, it’s mostly Quattro rally footage, with a bit of circuit racing just so we don’t forget Audi doesn’t mind the black stuff too.

Make the jump and the clip is yours.

VIDEO: GTI Advanced Driving Academy – Eastern Creek

Hard to believe it is almost a month ago now, but I still haven’t forgotten just how much fun it was fanging around Eastern Creek in Volkswagen’s finest. Their new Mk6 Golf GTI is a great package and improves on the already excellent Mk5 model.

If you missed out on the GTI Advanced Driving Academy here are a few highlights, courtesy of Volkswagen Australia. The first clip starts off with some hot laps, with another couple below showing the GTI on the skidpan and, again, on the track.

The clips aren’t really substantial enough to give too much away, but they do give a bit of an insight into how the day was run. Or, if you went to the day like me, you’ll have fun re-living the moment.

So, about that RS5 and the Essen Motor Show

Audi RS5

According to my anonymous tip last month we should be hearing and reading about the Audi RS5 later today. Given the story hasn’t grown too many legs in the last few weeks I’m a bit unsure this dream rumour will actually come true. Let’s hope it does, hey.

I mean, the 330kW normally aspirated V8 is going to propel the RS5 at an astonishing rate, and it is sure to make amazing sounds of thunder while doing so. C’mon Audi, just release the car already!

However, looking at this gallery of images, don’t hold your breath.

Golden years

DTM - Golden years

It’s been a bit of YouTube week so far on AUSmotive, so I may as well continue this trend with another clip of awesomeness. This time from the DTM series with footage from around 20 years ago. Cheesy pop, again, is the order of the day, but you can’t deny the classic motorsport action. It is first rate.

If you enjoy racing when it goes wrong, then keep an eye out at 1:20, 3:28 and 4:45 in the clip after the jump.

City v country

I was pretty critical of the daft Corolla ad this time last year. But, credit where credit is due, this new “Nothing soft gets in—Country border security” ad is bloody good.

“Can I get the collar down please.” “When did you have last latte sir?” “Yea, we got tofu here.”

Haha, they’re all great lines, and there’s still some hidden gems in there, as well.

Although, I thought it was a bit rough of them to single out an old Suzuki Sierra as being no good out bush. They’ve been hanging on in the outback, tough as old nails, as well as anything Toyota has ever made.

VIDEO: Dan Neil drives a toaster

Dan Neil, LA Times

Like me, you have probably never heard of Dan Neil either. That aside, here he gets to do something I’m sure many AUSmotive readers would love to be do—drive the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’.

The clip is short and to the point. On the surface, at least, Neil does a competent job of giving a good intro to the new supercar. Perhaps all it really needed was footage of some more spirited driving. I guess we will have to wait for Clarkson to see that.

You can watch Dan’s clip after the break. Also included is some crash footage which shows the explosive doors Neil refers to in his review.

The guys are crazy

Some amateur YouTube clips are great. Some are brilliant. And, some, like this one, leave you scratching your head. You’re about to learn that the greatness of BMW’s 3 Series is true.

Rex gossip

Subaru Australia sells WRX number 30,000

Back in the day Subaru knocked the Mitsubishi Lancer GSR off the AWD 2-litre turbo perch with its then new Impreza WRX. The ‘Rex’ then proceeded to take all before it to establish itself as the benchmark $40K weapon of choice.

A great product well marketed off the back of local and international rally successes ensured the WRX became a cult classic. Its ability to punch well above its weight in performance terms also helped greatly.

Despite a few bug eyed hiccups along the way the WRX has been a fixture in the affordable performance category, with regular sales continuing to tick over. No surprise, then, that Subaru Australia is making some noise about selling its 30,000th Rex down under.

Although, it must be said, Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, does appear lost in his own hype, “I have lost count of the number of supposed competitors built up as Rex challengers, but they couldn’t cut the mustard, particularly the front wheel drive and rear wheel drive pretenders who soon got lost in the dust.”

If Senior truly believes the Rex hasn’t lost significant market share to the likes of Volkswagen’s Golf GTI and Mazda’s MPS 3, then he is kidding himself.

To be fair, though, no other car in the WRX’s segment can match its longevity in the Australian sales charts over its 15 year life cycle. It’s just a shame the car’s exterior design team lost its mojo when creating the current model.
