2010 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

2010 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Alfa Romeo have released images of its 147 successor ahead of the car’s debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. Alfa enthusiasts will be delighted to see the return of Giulietta nameplate, and it certainly evokes a lot more cred than 149 might have done.

Built on an all new platform the Giulietta goes on sale before mid-2010 in Europe with Australian sales to follow towards the end of 2010.

Overall, I think the new styling looks quite good. Although, based on these pics it looks like style may have come at the expense of interior space.

There will be five engines on offer at launch, all meeting Euro 5 emissions targets. Four of the five engines will be turbo charged. There’ll be a pair of petrol powerplants, a 90kW 1.4 TB and a 130kW 1.4 TB MultiAir, and a pair of diesel turbos, an 80kW 1.6 JTDM and a 130kW 2.0 JTDM. The range will be headed by a 175kW 1750 TBi, featuring an exclusive Quadrifoglio Verde specification.

Alfa Romeo have designed the car to achieve a 5 star Euro NCAP rating and the Giulietta will come equipped with features such as VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control), DST (Dynamic Steering Torque), Q2 electronic differential and Alfa DNA selector.

What do you reckon, are you looking forward to seeing more of this car at Geneva, or do you think it’s styling is a bit over the top?

Porsche Sport Driving School - Australia

The chance to indulge in a day behind the wheel of a current model Porsche 911 GT3 on an unrestricted racetrack is surely one that most driving enthusiasts would jump at with great gusto. If this sounds like you, then such an opportunity can be yours thanks to the Porsche Sport Driving School. Okay, a fee of around $2000 might cut the number of willing participants back somewhat—but is this a small price to pay to sample motoring nirvana, or is Porsche just having a lend?

Lucklily for you a couple of AUSmotive readers recently took on the burden of answering this question for your benefit. Below is a report from one of the guys who went along…

Google Street View takes on Lotus test track

Lotus test track

The chaps at Lotus have invited one of the Google Street View fleet to do a few laps around their test track at Hethel near Norwich. This is the first race track in the UK to be captured by Street View cameras and Lotus fans can see cars such as the 2-Eleven, an Evora prototype and an ethanol powered Exige 265E lapping the circuit.

You can check it out for yourself by clicking here.

What would you say to a front-wheel drive BMW?

BMW 135i

Speculation about the possibilities of a front-wheel drive BMW have been circulating for a while now. That theory is only set to grow according to a report in Autocar that quotes a BMW source as saying the company could “break with tradition”.

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën are in discussions about devleoping future joint ventures. Currently the two parties share the four cylinder engines found in MINIs and Peugeots. And the German-French alliance is also working on a modular front-wheel drive platform which would be shared among various MINI, Citroen and Peugeot models.

But it is the admission from a BMW insider that a future 1 Series could also use this front-wheel drive platform that will rattle a few cages, “Nothing is concrete at this stage but discussions are on-going about whether or not BMW should break with the tradition of rear and four-wheel-drive cars.

“For many in this company it is a taboo subject. But we have to be realistic with the targets we have set ourselves for fuel consumption and emissions, and they clearly favour a front-wheel-drive solution for 2018.”

On the one hand many 1 Series buyers may not know, or care, if their car is driven by the front wheels. On the other hand, though, it would mark a massive shift in philosophy for BMW who heavily marketed the 1 Series rear wheel drive benefits when it was first launched.

The prospective timeframe is still quite a long way off, and if it did come to fruition it appears there would be plenty of time for BMW to soften their stance on FWD platforms. But, what do you think, would a front wheel drive BMW appeal to you, or is the mere thought something you cannot contemplate?

Volkswagen Amarok – first official photos

Volkswagen Amarok

Volkswagen have already announced that the Amarok will take on support duties at next year’s Dakar Rally. Good idea, then, to release some official pics of the production ready model in advance, and here they are.

The Amarok will be built in Buenos Aires, Argentina and will go on sale in South America from January next year. European buyers can expect deliveries in mid-2010, while Australian customers will have to wait until the end of next year to get their hands on Volkswagen’s first serious foray into the pick-up segment.

Initially, the Amarok will be available only as a dual cab, but a single cab model is due for release in 2011. The SUV will be available in 2WD, switchable 4WD and permanent 4WD. The switchable system can be activated from inside the cabin with the touch of a button. The permanent 4motion system for the Amarok will utilise a Torsen diff set up and will distribute power to the wheels with a 40:60 rear bias.

Low gearing will be available for more heavy-duty off road duties, at which point electronic aids, such as Hill Descent Assist and an ABS system tuned for off road use, will start to do their thing.

From launch two engine options will be on offer, both 2 litre turbo diesels. The base spec 2.0 TDI will offer 90kW/340Nm, while a more powerful 120kW/400Nm will also be available. A bit under powered perhaps?

With a payload capacity of over 1 tonne and a towing capacity of 2.8 tonnes the Amarok should prove suitable for most needs in its target audience. Volkswagen boast the dimensions of the Amarok’s rear tray are the largest in its class and say a Euro sized pallet can fit in between the rear wheel arches.

Volkswagen Australia have been closely monitoring sales of Toyota’s Hi-Lux, which are very impressive, it must be said. For Volkswagen to cut deeply into the Hi-Lux’s customer base the Amarok will need to be priced competitively and pack a lot more punch under the bonnet. I just can’t see Volkswagen Australia entering the local market with a 120kW turbo diesel option, much less a 90kW version.

Schumacher adds to F1 return rumours

Michael Schumacher karting in Brazil

Michael Schumacher spent last weekend wiping the floor against an impressive driver line up at a karting meet in Brazil. After taking out the Florianópolis 2009 event, which included current F1 drivers Felipe Massa, Rubens Barrichello and Tonio Liuzzi, Schumacher also added fuel to his F1 comeback with Mercedes GP fire.

It has been reported across the interwebz now that when pressed about a possible F1 return Schumacher replied, “Who knows? Anything can happen.”

His driving form clearly seems up to scratch and, physically, he claims to be raring to go, “I don’t have any problems with my neck. It’s 100 per cent,” Schumacher said.

Now, if you believe Ross Brawn, this story is a whole lot of hogwash driven by a fanciful meedyah contingent. Well, yeah, of course it is. But that’s because it makes such a cracking story. Anyway, late last week it was reported that Brawn told German newspaper Bild, “The issue now haunts the media, I know, but there is nothing in it.

“Michael would have returned to the cockpit for Ferrari but only temporarily. He has no ambitions to start a new career.”

Contrasting that stance is an article from UK newspaper The Mirror claiming Mercedes have offered Schumi carte blanche with the new team. That is, he can pick any job he so desires. The article states, “The German car giant is so desperate to persuade the nation’s most famous racer to join their new Formula One campaign as a manufacturer they have told him he can have any job in the team even if he does not want to race.”

In the words of that famous philosopher Mr Nike-Marketingmachine, Michael—just do it!

2010 Audi A8 photo gallery

2010 Audi A8

In Miami today Audi launched its all new A8 saloon. Complete with a vast array of new technologies and improved efficiency the luxury sedan sits atop the Audi family tree.

European deliveries will commence in the early months of 2010 and, at first, buyers will have the choice of two V8 engines. Audi’s familiar 4.2 FSI, tuned to 273kW and 445Nm in A8 spec, can reach 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. This will be accompanied by a 4.2 TDI, with peak power of 258kW. The diesel’s massive 800Nm of torque gets the big saloon to 100km.h 0.2 seconds faster than the petrol engine, taking just 5.5 seconds. Meanwhile, both engines are relatively frugal for their class, the petrol V8 is rated at 9.5l/100km while the oil burner sips a miserly 7.6l/100km and, amazingly, emits just 199g/km of CO2, or roughly the same as the 2.0 TFSI found in the much smaller S3.

Two six cylinder 3.0 TDI engines will become available after the initial launch. The higher spec tune will have 184kW. However, it is the more modest spec 150kW tune that Audi will use to grab the headlines, due mostly to its class leading 6.0l/100km fuel consumption and 159g/km CO2 figures.

Naturally there are numerous new electronic gadgets and features in the new A8, but it is the MMI touch functionality attached to the navigation plus system that presents the biggest step forward for in cabin usability. At least, it looks that way, the proof will be given in real world use. Basically the driver is able to use the touchpad to hand write characters to direct the nav system, or make phone calls, and so on. Crucially, the system is able to recognise several languages and character sets, including Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and Cyrillic.

Other features include optional full LED headlamps, an 8 speed tiptronic transmission, night vision with pedestrian recognition, a rear biased quattro system and a high end Bang & Olufsen stereo system for added bling.

Now, those full LED headlamps (shown in the first image after the press release below). Hmm, nice technology and all, but I think Audi has jumped the shark on the styling front. The R8 headlight styling has paved the way for Audi to forge ever more daring results and it has to be said the new A8 design is a step too far. Stick to the povo spec xenon lights, then. Overall, though, the car looks quite good, while not especially outstanding. It has a more defined and chiselled in appearance than the car it replaces and I don’t mind it. The previous A8 was an almost perfect execution in how to proportion a luxury saloon. You knew it was a big car because it wore the A8 badge, but it wasn’t ostentatious or in your face. Probably need to see this car in the flesh to judge that aspect of the styling.

You can read the brief version of Audi’s press release after the jump, along with over 50 images, most available as wallpaper-friendly 2000px super images by clicking on each pic. There’s a short clip showing off the car, as well. If you have the stomach for more comprehensive technical details, you can download Audi’s full press release in PDF format using the link below.

Revamped Sauber team not on F1’s latest 2010 entry list

BMW Sauber F1.09

As ever Formula One is playing with the hearts and minds of its competitors. Last Friday BMW agreed to sell the remnants of its team back to former owner Peter Sauber. An interesting Q&A piece with the 66-year-old entrepreneur discussing the deal can be read on the Formula1.com website.

In that article Sauber mentions development of their car for 2010 season is well under way. This is largely thanks to Ferrari who will be supplying engines to the reformed team. That’s the good news.

The not so good news comes from the FIA—overnight the FIA released it’s 2010 entry list. There are only 12 teams on that list and Sauber is not one of them.

A major condition of BMW’s sale is that the deal can only be finalised if a new Sauber team is granted a starting place on the 2010 grid. A sticking point in this outcome is the fact that 13 teams had already signed a Concorde Agreement with the FIA for the 2010 season. Of course, neither Sauber or BMW are one of those signatories. However, Toyota is. Given they have since withdrawn from the sport one would assume that Sauber could fill the void, so to speak.

Indeed, this possibility is spoken of with confidence by Peter Sauber in his interview mentioned above. Sauber explained, “The FIA had already promised us the 14th slot on the grid. Under that circumstance it would have been our obligation to persuade the one team [Williams] that had voted against us to accept our entry.”

More news on this story as it comes to hand. BMW’s press release on the sale back to Sauber can be read below.

If you tolerate this then your children will be next

You may remember the earlier news that saw the worldwide BMW Z4 ‘art of driving’ television commercial pulled from Australian screens. I stated at the time that, as a sign of protest against this ludicrous decision, AUSmotive will be running the above footage, which is featured in the commercial, on the first day of every month for the rest of the year.

The fact that regulations are in place that deem this ad inappropriate is a sad indictment on the state of the road safety debate in this country. The fact that some members of society are unable separate entertainment from reality is equally disturbing. That they are given a voice is mind boggling.

Clearly, the title of this article is tongue in cheek and is designed to highlight the level of paranoia that exists in wowsers when presented with the notion that driving can be fun.

A reminder, too, that you can watch the ad in full on the BMW Australia website. Even better, check out BMW’s Expression of Joy Z4 microsite.

Being December this marks the end of my mini protest. Further heightening my discontent on this issue is the ad after the break for a flavoured milk that is, apparently, deemed acceptable for the simple fact that it is not advertising a car. Taking a churlish logical step, then, if you ever feel like burning some rubber on a public road, or breaking any road rules for that matter, just keep an Ice Break in your cup holder for immunity on all driving charges.*

Volkswagen Polo – 2010 European COTY

Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen’s new Polo has just been awarded the 2010 European Car of the Year award. The VW supermini edged out the Toyota iQ by a narrow margin but it was then daylight to the rest of the seven car field.

The full run down of points is as follows; Volkswagen Polo (347 points), Toyota iQ (337), Opel/Vauxhall Astra (221), Skoda Yeti (158), Mercedes-Benz E-Class (154), Peugeot 3008 (144) and the Citröen C3 Picasso (113).

The newest baby-Golf is due on Australian shores in the first half of next year. This news is sure to help the locals market the car down under. But, the news is so fresh that VW’s press team haven’t even had time to beat their chest. Nor has it made it to the Euro COTY website. I’ll be sure to update this article with Volkswagen’s press release once it comes to hand.

The European COTY sits nicely alongside the Golf’s current crown of Word COTY, which was awarded back in April.

UPDATE 1 December: Press release from Volkswagen AG added below and the European Car of the Year website now leads with the news of the Polo’s success.

Autocar: Scirocco R v Focus RS

Scirocco R v Focs RS

This video from Autocar, featuring the Volkswagen Scirocco R and the Ford Focus RS is a bit of a tease really. You see, neither car is currently available in Australia. Worse, it doesn’t look like that situation is going to change anytime soon.

However, that minor inconvenience doesn’t make either car less desirable. Indeed, in the Scirocco I probably have something of an unhealthy infatuation. I was recently in the market for a new car and, were the Scirocco available to me, I dare say it would have been right at the top of my list.

Written reviews for the Scirocco R have been around for a few weeks now, but somehow, I managed to miss this video review.

Check out the clip after the jump and see what you think. Which would you buy—the Volkswagen or the Ford?
