Justin Timberlake shows off undisguised Audi A1

Audi A1 early reveal

Audi have just announced they will be using Justin Timberlake as a brand ambassador for for their new premium compact A1 hatch. So, was it a calculated plan, knowing the papparazzi would be following his every move, or is the image above, clearly showing an undisguised A1, causing the Audi hierarchy some pain?

Well, what do you think? Looks like the contrasting sidearch running from the A-pillar over to the base of the C-pillar, first seen on the A1 project quattro (see photo below), has made it into production. Now familiar LED day running lights also feature prominently.

And what of Justin Timberlake as brand ambassador? Not sure about you, but for me, that has already taken some gloss away from this new A1, haha.

Aston Martin ‘Cynical’ Concept revealed

Aston Martin Cygnet Concept

Back in July Aston Martin shocked us all with the revelation they were developing a tiny little city car—the ‘Cygnet’. Well, actually, Toyota is doing the developing, mostly in the form of providing the iQ on which Aston can adorn its own design language. That process, in visual form at least, has been revealed today in the images you see here.

While a definite rationale hasn’t been published by Aston Martin it is understood that the car’s relatively frugal fuel consumption and exhaust emissions will help lower the figures of Aston’s overall fleet.

Even now the company has given little away, only providing a meagre three sentence release. So let’s show Aston that two can play that game, and instead of using the concept’s proper name, AUSmotive shall henceforth refer to the car as the ‘Cynical’.

Renault stay in F1, kind of

Renault F1

The Renault name will remain in Formula One into the 2010 season. However, as much as 75-80% of the operation will be sold to Luxembourg based company Genii Capital.

According to a statement posted on the Renault F1 website (available after the jump) this deal will help secure a long term future for the French manufacturer, who have a 35 year history in F1, “The new partnership will contribute to procuring the team the resources to compete sustainably at the highest level, and creates a great opportunity to modernise its governance.”

The news will certainly come as a welcome relief to former BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica who was signed by Renault after he was left without a seat following BMW’s departure from F1.

Meanwhile, Bernard Rey, Renault’s Team President is understably happy with today’s announcement, “I am delighted to welcome Genii Capital as our new strategic partner as I am sure that their enthusiasm and business expertise will create a new dynamic for the team, the staff, and our partners. Altogether, we look forward to competing again at the highest level in Formula One.”

Rumours first surfaced of a Renault withdrawal from Formula One about six weeks ago. A little over a week ago strong rumours suggested that Prodrive were set for a complete buyout of Renault’s F1 program. Now, though, another piece of the 2010 Formula One jigsaw has been locked into place in what has been one of the best silly season’s ever.

And with Schumacher watch in full operation, I think we are yet to see the biggest and best news the sport could hope for.

Lotus in Formula One

Lotus F1 history

The return of Lotus to Formula One in 2010 is a bitter sweet scenario for many. The much revered icon of British motorsport is now heavily backed by outside influences with Malaysian ownership under the watch of Proton since 1994. Will the return of Lotus to the F1 grid honour the memory of the late, great Colin Chapman? Or will its return be a once great star that fails to glimmer as brightly as in times past?

At this stage, at least, the current holders of the Lotus name seem to be making the right noises in regards to understanding the burden they carry with their return to the Formula One paddock.

Having just been given the keys to the Lotus F1 Racing media portal it was a nice surprise to discover these old skool images. A timely find, too, as today marks the 27th year since Colin Chapman passed away.

Also of note is an article which briefly documents the history of Lotus in F1. That piece, along with more images to accompany that stunning image of Graham Hill in a Lotus 49B from the 1969 German Grand Prix can be seen after the jump.

Schumacher watch: Eternal flame edition

Schumacher watch

Michael Schumacher’s German compatriot  Timo Glock reckons the Schumacher household is ablaze with candles bearing the Mercedes Benz logo. Apparently they accompany a lovingly arranged set of Ross Brawn portraits. Speaking at the launch of the Virgin Racing Glock said, “The flame is still there, it’s still burning and it will be great if he returns. For me, my personal feeling, it’s quite obvious he is coming back.”

Mercedes GP team heavyweight Nick Fry has also thrown his hat into the ring wanting to get on the Schumi bandwagon. Although, when asked directly if a Schumacher deal was imminent he coyly replied, “I can’t tell you at this stage, unfortunately.” Yes you can Nick, go on, be a sport. You can tell us, we’re just a little blog in far away Australia.

Maybe, though, Fry has already let the cat out of the bag by admitting his Mercedes GP team wants Michael in their car, “The view from inside Formula One, not just in my team, is that they all hope it will happen.

“On Saturday night in Germany, the news that Michael might return was the first thing on and the Copenhagen climate talks was second. Not sure if they have their priorities right, but it shows the impact.”

Fry went on to say that the seven-time world champion would be “very good for our team.”

Unless the rumour dam breaks in the meantime I’ll see you here tomorrow for the next edition of Schumacher watch.

MINI Beachcomber Concept

MINI Beachcomber Concept

MINI will be hitting the Detroit auto show (16-24 January) doorless Moke stylez with this new Beachcomber Concept. Based on the R60 Crossover platform (due for release late next year) the Beachcomber opens itself for action with “spontaneous and active” open air attitude. The Beachcomber also features the Crossover’s ALL4 all-wheel-drive system.

You can’t ever imagine a car like this making it down a production line, but that hasn’t stopped MINI Australia Manager, Justin Hocevar, from going on an early sell job, “It’s an exciting look at what the future could hold for MINI. If the MINI Beachcomber Concept did eventuate I think it would be very well suited to the Australian landscape and way of life, especially given our propensity for coastal living and appetite for adventure, leisure and fun.”

MINI also claims the car is nice, cosy and safe by having strong rollover protection and reinforced A and D pillars. But, you know, there’s no doors, so while the concept car might fully recreate the Moke experience, if the Beachcomber ever did make into into series production, one would be very surprised if the doorless look remained.

That said, bung a few doors on this Beachcomber and you could very well be seeing what the production version of the Crossover model may look like. Expect quite a few of the styling cues you’re seeing here to translate across to that model.

The Beachcomber Concept, though, perfectly embodies MINI’s cheeky attitude and will certainly stand out from the crowd when it hits the motor show circuit. Australian and and full International press release also available after the jump.

BMW Z4 sDrive35is returns serve to TT RS

BMW Z4 sDrive35is

BMW will be returning Audi’s TT RS serve with their own 250kW Roadster to debut at January’s Detroit auto show. The awkwardly named Z4 sDrive35is lines up against the TT RS with alarming similarities. Power, 250kW; check. Torque, 450Nm; check. Ride height, 10mm lower than standard car; check. Wing mirrors, matte aluminium finish; check. Zero to one hundred time, under 5 seconds; check.

It is worth noting, of course, that one major difference between the two cars is BMW’s use of its familiar and well loved straight six cylinder engine, as against Audi’s oddball yet delightful sounding five cylinder. With twin turbo goodness to whoosh things along, the Z4 sDrive35is can momentarily boost peak torque to 500Nm with an overboost function.

The world of double clutch transmissions has consumed the sDrive35is, which will be only be available with BMW’s latest 7-speed DCT.

BMW Australia have confirmed the Z4 sDrive35is will be in local dealerships by May 2010. Currently 44% of local Z4 sales are for the regular 225kW sDrive35i, which was priced at $116,900 when launched in May this year. The cost of an extra s in the model designation will be revealed closer to its Australian launch. Mind, with Audi Australia just announcing pricing of the TT RS at $133,700 you can safely assume what sort of entry price the Z4 sDrive35is will have.

As usual, there’s more pics and a heap of press guff after the break.

Red team gives Schumacher the green light

Michael wants to play at Ross' place

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has perhaps thrown the most potent log on the Schumacher to Mercedes GP fire by giving the seven time world champion a green light to reunite with Ross Brawn.

Schumacher recently stood down from his advisory role with Ferrari’s F1 team, but still had a three year agreement in place to consult with their road car program. When asked recently if this agreement would deny Schumacher the freedom to join Mercedes GP di Montezemolo said, “No, [it’s] not binding. It’s clear that if he decides to take another road our [consultancy] agreement will no longer be valid, that is logical. You can’t work with a competitor and with us at the same time.”

With this new revelation following the weekend’s news that Schumacher and Mercedes have reached a verbal agreement it would now appear the only thing standing in the way of an official announcement being made is time.

Things aren’t all plain sailing for Mercedes GP, though. According to The Press Association an £80 million pound sponsorship deal is about to go horribly wrong. It would seem that someone got a bit ahead of themselves by signing the agreement without authorisation.

While the motorsport world is salivating at the thought of Schumacher and Brawn starting a new competitive relationship there is a jilted lover in all of this. Spare a thought for Nick Heidfeld. The 32-year-old German is widely tipped to be the man Mercedes GP sign if the Schumacher deal doesn’t come to fruition. And, yet, he must wait in the shadow of Schumacher’s hype to see if he has a job in 2010. Mind, Heidfeld claims he has knocked back concrete job offers, so if he is without an F1 seat in 2010 he may only have himself to blame.

Audi TT RS – Australian specifications

Audi TT RS

Audi have sprung a very nice surprise for fans of the TT RS. Originally due here early next year, they’ve managed to unwrap a few examples in time for Christmas. Nice work!

If you dig this car you’ll know all about it, so you don’t need me to remind you about the angry sound produced by the 250kW in-line five cylinder turbo. But, in case you have forgotten you can click the button below for some five pot aural delights.

One thing you may not know is the asking price. Entry level pricing for the Coupé starts at $133,700 plus all those horrible taxes and delivery charges. So, we’re talking north of $140K by the time you drive off the showroom floor. Audi hope to sell around 80 TT RS models every year. No word in all their guff today about the Roadster, so leave that with me for a bit.

The TT RS has been on sale in Europe for some time now, so you can also take a squiz at some review clippings. Despite the work Audi has done in making the TT RS look and sound superb, it would seem from those reviews they left a bit of work to do with the driving experience.

After the jump you can see a full complement of Australian images (all available as wallpaper-friendly 2000px super images, just click on the pics you like), as well raft of press information. Knock yourselves out.

The next big thing

Audi A1

Sometimes when a car manufacturer is ready to launch a new car they try to keep things as quiet as possible leading up to a surprise reveal. Other times manufacturers sing from the roof tops telling anyone who’ll listen, and plenty who won’t, all about their upcoming model.

The latter approach is the one being taken by Audi for the A1 which will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. A twitter, Facebook and YouTube offensive has been launched, with a new A1 microsite also up and running.

No doubt Audi will be drip feeding information over the coming weeks and months. You can see a YouTube clip below promoting the A1’s tagline “The next big thing”. Also, of some note, perhaps, is the “Project Quattro” graphics used in the flash animation on the A1 microsite. Fuelling speculation that the A1 platform might offer a quattro drivetrain after all.

For a reminder of the A1’s inspiration, take a squiz back at the A1 Sportback Concept.

That’s gold Jerry! Gold!

Ferrari P540

This is the new Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta, and it’s the only one in the world. The car was built for Edward Walson, son of the man who gave the world cable television. Clearly, Ed isn’t struggling for a buck and this fact didn’t escape Ferrari’s Portfolio program who were only too happy to assist sir get what he wanted.

The P540 is based on a Ferrari 599 GTB but those paying attention will have noticed Ed’s creation doesn’t have a roof. That means extra strengthening and diluting of what makes the 599 such a great car. Well, doesn’t it? Apparently the reinforcing material only added 20kg to the car’s overall weight. Not too bad, and it shows what clever stuff carbon fibre really is.

So why the gold? Over forty years ago Federico Fellini made a film called Toby Dammit. It was inspired by an Edgar Allan Poe story and Fellini’s film featured a one-off Fezza made specially for the flick. That prancing horse made quite an impression on a young Walson who, now with more money than he knows what to do with, had Ferrari and Pininfarina build him a car to honour his memory of the movie.

You can see the car from Toby Dammit by clicking here. Although, be warned it’s a little bit strange and has a gruesome ending. Let’s hope Ed doesn’t go off recreating that, too. There’s also a couple of screen grabs after the break.

It took the Portfolio team a bit over a year to develop the P540 from sketch to finished product. It doesn’t look too bad, actually. What do you reckon?

And, more importantly, if you had an undisclosed wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, what movie car would you like to see come to life? As a product of Generation-X I’d have to toss a coin to decide between the Ferris Bueller Ferrari or Doc’s Delorean.

Lotus F1 signs Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen

Lotus F1 2010

Lotus F1 announced today that Italy’s Jarno Trulli and Finland’s Heikki Kovalainen will form their main driving team in 2010. Malaysia’s Fairuz Fauzy will fill the test driver’s role.

Team Principal, Tony Fernandes, said in a statement released by Lotus F1, “The appointment of Jarno, Heikki and Fairuz as our race drivers is a testament to the quality of our team, to our ambition and drive, and above all to our long-term vision of success in Formula 1.”

Trulli and Kovalainen are well known to Formula One, of course, both having won races in the past. Fauzy, meanwhile, last experienced F1 in a test driver capacity for the Spyker team in 2007.

Both Jarno and Heikki said all the right things on their first day on the job, “It is a privilege for me to sign for the new Lotus F1 Racing team. I have been impressed by the long-term vision of the team management and technical staff. Tony has set out very ambitious plans and I am ready to help the team achieve these high targets,” said Trulli.

Meanwhile, Kovalainen showed he knows on which side his bread is buttered, “I’m also excited to be part of a team that is not only bringing back the Lotus name, one of the most iconic teams in any form of global motorsport, but also doing so with the support and backing of Malaysia, a country I fell in love with when I first raced there in 2007.”

So, is the the coup that Lotus F1 would have us believe? Or in the cut and thrust world of F1, is this a middle of the road signing for what is likely to be a middle of the road team (in its first year or two, at least). Maybe it’s a wise move to sign two guys with experience, and both have shown, with the right cars, they have the pace. The question is, will they have the right car?

The full release can be read at the Lotus F1 Racing website. The Q&A statement, featuring Tony Fernandes, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen is also worth a read.
