Mark Webber drives virtual lap of Silverstone

Mark Webber

It’s Mark Webber’s turn to tell us all about the new Silverstone layout today. He’s a bit excited about racing in England, too. It’s the home race for Red Bull Racing, there’s very passionate fans and, best of all, Mark gets to snuggle under his own doona at night.

Actually, on that point, I think I heard the other day that Webber is the only current F1 driver who lives in the UK. All the rest are living it Playboy mansion style on the continent I guess. Still, you can’t expect a kid from Struggle Town to be attracted by the bright lights of Monaco. That’s simply a place you go to win races.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420

Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420

Aston Martin have just taken the wraps of their latest special edition V8 Vantage. It’s called the N420; that’s N for Nürburgring and 420 for the number of horses under the bonnet.

The Vantage has a proud record of racing at the Nürburgring 24 hour race. An Aston Martin Vantage has raced at the Ring every year since making its debut in 2006. Perhaps the most famous of these cars is the one called “Rose” which was the first Vantage to pop its Ring cherry. That car has completed thousands of racing miles over a number of years. A great advertisement for Aston, supported ably up by the appearance of CEO Ulrich Bez in the race seat as well.

So, this N420 thing, what’s it all about? In addition to the 420hp on offer from the 4.7 litre V8 there is the choice of 6-speed transmissions in traditional manual or Sportshift auto configuration. Weight has been reduced by 27kg, too, which is a nice touch. But that won’t really stand out at the Country Club, so Aston have obliged by throwing bits of carbon fibre trim on the outside. Optional “Race Collection” paint schemes will also give you bragging rights at the 19th hole. Other minor styling updates have also been introduced.

Perhaps one of the better introductions is the addition of a revised sports exhaust system. Aston say this “delivers a suitably rousing soundtrack”. The V8 Vantage already sounded sublime and if they have found a way to improve on that exhaust note then they’ve done a cracking job.

2010 Aston Martin DB9

Aston Martin DB9

The Aston Martin DB9 is one of the world’s best looking sports tourers. That’s probably why Aston’s engineer’s left well enough alone when designing this 2010 model update; “the most significant programme of upgrades since its world debut in 2003″, says the press guff . Yeah, I know, it looks just like the old one.

However, Aston Martin maintain they have changed the front bumper and grille. They’re also adamant they have revamped the lighting graphics, both front and rear. A splash of silver paint on the brake calipers and some blinging 20” alloys pretty much complete the changes on the outside. Or, so they say.

Beneath that gorgeous exterior Aston have fiddled with the suspension and, really, based on the press release below not done much else of any note.

Never mind that, just enjoy the pics below. Any excuse to check out Aston Martin eye candy is one worth taking.

Citroën DS3 R3 – customer rally car

Citroen DS3 R3

This spunky looking machine is Citroën’s latest rally car. The DS3 R3 has been developed for the FIA’s R3T category and  features a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine pumping out 210 horsepower. There’s also a pretty healthy 350Nm on offer. Drawing on the technical knowledge of the immensely successful C4 WRC program the DS3 R3 is fitted with a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The DS3 R3 is essentially a customer car and already has 10,000km of testing across all kinds of typical rallying surfaces under its belt. The R3 is scheduled to make its race debut towards the end of this year. Citroën Racing starts with a road going DS3 THP 150 and will make the racecars available in kit or ready-to-race form.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport sets new landspeed record

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

On 26 June 2010 this lairy orange and black Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, with 1200hp (882kW) if you don’t mind, set a new landspeed record for production vehicles. The bar has now been set at 431km/h. Astonishing!

Following normal protocols for such records the top speed is calculated as an average of two runs in opposite directions set within a one hour time limit. In its first pass the Super Sport logged a top speed of 427.933km/h. The second was recorded at 434.211km/h.

“We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h,” explains Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, “but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.”

The record was set by Bugatti’s chief test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel at Volkwagen Group’s Ehra-Lessien proving grounds, near Wolfsburg. The new mark has been verified by the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÃœV) and the Guinness Book of Records.

A look at the new Silverstone GP circuit

Silverstone - New Grand Prix Circuit

With the British Grand Prix now just a few days away, it’s a good time to take a look at the revised Silverstone layout. Those familiar with the old layout will immediately notice the infield section from Abbey through to Brooklands is new. Other than that the bulk of the course is unchanged, save for a minor rework at Club Corner.

Overtaking opportunities should present themselves into Village and the Loop. Late braking into Brooklands might also offer chances of drivers to claim track position.

There’s a couple of videos available after the break featuring Martin Brundle’s thoughts on the new layout. They’re well worth a look and, if anything, will heighten your expectations for this weekend’s action. Watching F1 cars scythe through the Maggott-Becketts-Chapel section is one the highlights of the year and I get the feeling the new Abbey-Farm series might be just as spectacular.

The map above has been adapted from a PDF made available for download from the official Silverstone website, so make sure you check that out, as well.

Bruno Senna’s home movie

McLaren MP4-8

The video below features some in-car footage of Bruno Senna driving a McLaren MP4/8 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed over the weekend. Truth be told it’s a pretty crappy clip, filmed on a mobile phone. But, when you stop to think about it, how many times do you see amateur in-car footage filmed from inside a Formula One car like this. That alone, makes this clip very, very cool!

Marulan Driver Training Centre needs your help

MRT Performance track day

AUSmotive recently discovered that the Marulan Driver Training Centre provides a first class facility for road users of various needs and experience. Unfortunately, MDTC is under threat of forced closure due to noise complaints.

On the day I attended MDTC all participants were asked to be mindful of surrounding properties and, anecdotally at least, I can say the noise from our group was kept to an absolute minimum. Keep in mind all cars in attendance were road registered vehicles in compliance with the required noise standards.

So, what can you do to help? The Marulan Region Portal is currently running a poll to gauge support or otherwise for the Marulan Driver Training Centre. If you have used the facilities at MDTC and found them to be worthwhile, or if you generally support the facility, please take the time to vote in the poll, which can be found at the bottom of the homepage.

As well as “Drive your street car” days Garry Wilmington and his staff offer numerous driver training programs aimed at improving road skills of inexperienced road users. The skills taught are not just about car control, but also take in driver attitude and hazard perception techniques.

MDTC plays an important role in driver education and it would be a real shame if it was forced to close down. Please do what you can to help and spread word of this poll.

Hay stack

HDT VH Commodore @ Goodwood FoS

The Goodwood Festival of Speed usually brings out some classic old racecars out for a run up the hill. Sometimes those classic machines don’t always return home in the pristine condition they arrived in. Here you can see Peter Champion, driving his former Brock/Perkins HDT Commodore, got things a little bit wrong during Friday’s action.

Champion ran wide, got into the grass, before ultimately punting the VH Commodore into the hay bales. Thankfully those bales helped to minimise the damage and repairs to the car which won the 1982 James Hardie 1000.

Speaking after the incident Champion said, “The brakes don’t get hot enough to work so I was relying on second gear to slow me down. Only problem was – I went for second and got fourth!”

The Commodore’s General Motors roots came in handy and Champion sourced a replacement steering rack from a 1982 Vauxhall Carlton and was back racing again on Saturday.
