Fresh Audi S1 spy shots

Audi S1 prototype

This otherwise innocent looking Audi A1 is believed to be a near production ready S1 pocket rocket. Apart from the images, there’s no new speculation from our last update posted in June, except to suggest the official reveal of the S1 could take place at the Paris Motor Show in October.

According to the photographer who took these pics, near Germany’s famous Nürburgring, the note from the exhaust was a bit “heartier” than other A1 models. A thought confirmed by the appearance of larger exhaust pipes at the rear.

More pics after the break.

Jay Leno on the Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche 918 Spyder

AUSmotive is fast becoming Porsche 918 Spyder central; this is the fourth article on the hybrid hypercar inside one week after all. However, this close up look provided by Jay Leno is one of the best opportunities yet to get a good understanding of the 918’s finer details.

The chemistry between Jay and Porsche Design Chief Michael Mauer isn’t exactly electrifying, if you’ll pardon the pun. But the 8 minutes plus of footage available after the break is very easy watching if you’re a fan of the 918 Spyder.

Some say… he thinks lawyers are the devil incarnate

The Stig

Kids, sit down, I have something to tell you. Santa Claus isn’t real. The Easter Bunny? No, nope real, either. The Tooth Fairy is a fraud, too. You may not be surprised to learn, then, that some say The Stig is not real; that he is just a person like you and me.

And it turns out The Stig himself actually thinks this is the case as well. But the lawyers at the BBC are in denial. Massive denial. And it is understood the situation is fast approaching breakig point. You see The Stig, well, the person inside the The Stig, wants to write his autobiography. Naturally, he reckons he might snag a few book sales if he comes out and says, “Hey, you’ll never guess what. I am The Stig!”

I reckon he’d be right, too. But the BBC silks don’t think so. They’re threatening legal action and pointing out The Stig is contractually obliged to keep mum about his identity. Supposedly a handful of BBC execs and the three hosts—Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May—are the only people who know The Stig’s true identity. Although, there are some reasonably well accepted theories as to who he might be.

Some say the irony of an organisation with the initials B and C in it preventing The Stig from revealing his true identity is a bit cute.

Pirelli commences F1 testing for 2011

Pirelli

It’s been a couple of months since Pirelli was announced as the sole tyre supplier for Formula One. As such they’ve extracted Nick Heidfeld from MercedesGP, put him in a Toyota TF109 and started testing in earnest prior to the 2011 season.

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery said, “We’re delighted to welcome Nick into the Pirelli family, and we’re confident that he’ll do a great job for us.

“The role of test driver is a crucial one, so we were looking for a driver who had plenty of recent Formula One experience, the speed to push our new tyres as hard as possible, and the consistency to provide reliable simulations, as well as the analytical skills to relay information accurately to our engineers. Nick fits the bill in every respect and we’re very pleased to have secured his services and obviously thankful to Mercedes GP Petronas for agreeing to release Nick from his contract.”

Hembrey went on to explain the 2009 Toyota was chosen so as to avoid any conflicts of interest with any current cars, “The Toyota was the perfect solution, as it is a contemporary racing machine with proven speed and reliability but without links to any of the manufacturers currently competing in Formula One.”

The new Pirelli deal will run for three years. F1 teams will get their first chance to try the new rubber at the short post-season test session following the final Grand Prix for the year to be held at Abu Dhabi on 14 November.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

In case you missed it the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has just taken place on the United States west coast, Monterey to be exact. Indeed, this was the event where the Porsche 918 Spyder showed its face. As you can see from the pic above the event brings a great mix of old classics with modern day exotica. If you want to see what all the fuss was about check out the post-event coverage over at Autoblog.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster spy shots

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

Pistonspy have some nice shots of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster in action at the Nürburgring. It’s expected we’ll get a proper look at an undisguised SLS AMG Roadster before the end of the year. It may even be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Engine specs from the tintop SLS AMG aren’t likely to change, so there might be a slight performance drop due to the extra weight needed to strengthen the roofless chassis.

More poke for Porsche Panamera Turbo

Porsche Panamera

Porsche have announced a number of new upgrades available across the Panamera range. Like it or not, the big four door saloon has been selling at a rapid rate of knots with well over 20,000 sales in the last 12 months.

The headline enhancements include a 40bhp “Powerkit” for the Panamera Turbo and a new “Sport Design Package” which you can see on the Panamera 4S above.

The Turbo’s Powerkit brings total power up to a pretty handy 540bhp, while also dragging peak torque to a new high of 750Nm. All that extra power hasn’t done much for the on-paper specs, with a very modest reduction of 0.1 seconds for the 0-100 time (now 3.9 seconds) and a minor increase in top speed, now published as 305km/h, up from the old mark of 303km/h. Oh, UK pricing for this upgrade is a shade over £11K. Best hope there is a marked improvement in the mid-range, then.

Included with the Sport Design Package are a new multispoke 20″ alloy wheel design. The Panamera Sport wheel is a staggered arrangement, 9.5″ at the front and 11.5″ at the rear.

There’s more after the break, including a brief run down of the inner-wheel braking capabilities of the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus system.

Gold fever

Goldrush!

When the BMW X5M was launched AUSmotive said the car had a heart of gold. This was a label based on the strength of the engine found beneath the skin that insidious beast. Well, sadly, now someone from Russia has given the X5M a matching coat. The part gangster, part short film, and, let’s hope, part ironic comedy, can be viewed after the jump.

Audi RS7 rendering

Audi RS7 rendering

Following the recent launch of Audi’s new A7 Sportback it hasn’t taken long for the Photoshop gurus to create an RS version. Here is an RS7 rendering produced by dacim12 from DeviantArt. It’s all pretty straightforward stuff; take a regular A7 shot, add some well-known RS styling cues, mix it altogether with some elite pchop skillz and voila—an RS7! The end result looks pretty good, I have to say.

But the real story here is Fourtitude’s snippet suggesting such a car would be powered by a new 4.0 litre V8 helped along with the assistance of twin turbos. Nice!

More Porsche 918 Spyder driving footage

Porsche 918 Spyder

With the recent appearance of footage showing the Porsche 918 Spyder in action it seems Porsche design boss Michael Mauer was feeling left out. But, as you can see from the pic above, Herr Mauer eventually got his way and found some one on one time with the 918 and some open road.

In the video below Mauer talks a little about the new Spyder and has a short squirt behind the wheel, in what must be close to being the best looking coupé to be revealed in 2010 so far.

Lancia prepares to enter new Stratosphere

New Lancia Stratos

In the motoring world the words Lancia Stratos ignite many fond memories. Huge rally success etched the model into immortality. Imagine, then, the good will that would accompany an all-new Stratos. The response would be, well, stratospheric.

Indeed, this is exactly what we are witnessing now that news has emerged that a one-off Stratos recreation is on the way to making a bona fide comeback.

Back in July a Stratos inspired test mule was spotted in action at Fiat’s test track. It certainly got tongues wagging, but it was understood the car was simply a unique Pininfarina creation made at the request of wealthy German entrepreneur Michael Stoschek. However, it now appears the Stratos is back.

Underneath the skin you will find a fair bit of Ferrari F430 architecture and chassis components. This includes the free-revving 4.3 litre V8 complete with more than 500bhp (375kW). An all carbon fibre body helps keep weight down to around 1240kg. Already, there could be as many as five new Stratos prototypes running around. You want one, don’t you!

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the original Stratos and if Stoschek gets his way there could be a limited run of 25 or so of this new 21st century Stratos.

Until more concrete details are confirmed you can keep an eye on this website while developments unfold.
