Mercedes ready to send AMG down hybrid path

Mercedes-Benz AMG

Word from Autocar tells us that Mercedes is ready to join Porsche in the performance hybrid market. Herbert Kohler, Daimler’s future mobility and advanced engineering guru, said, “In the future AMG will still offer high performance models but there will be hybrids there. AMG needs to reduce fuel consumption.”

Interestingly, where Porsche has used hybrid technology to add power, AMG will be taking a different approach. “Hybrids can boost, but AMGs will use stop-start and recuperation technology,” said Kohler.

No timeline has been given on the likely introduction of hybrid AMGs, so let’s take a guess at 2-3 years from now.

Ford Fiesta RS WRC ready for Finnish start

Ford Fiesta RS WRC

There aren’t many better sights in the automotive world than a WRC weapon in full tarmac trim. The low ride height, big wheels and flared body kit. All finished off in race paint. This Fiesta RS WRC is no exception, it looks fantastic!

Ford’s latest WRC hope will make its competition debut at the Arctic Lapland Rally in Finland next week. The event will cap off four days of testing in Sweden starting later this week. Timely, as the WRC season kicks off at the Rally Sweden in February.

More pics after the break. Do yourself a favour and make sure you download the 2000px super image versions, okay.

BMW 1M Coup̩ РAustralian bulletin

BMW 1M Coupe

A copy of a dealer bulletin for the 250kW 1M Coupé, produced by BMW Australia, has arrived at AUSmotive HQ. We thought it was only fair to share it with you and a screen grab of the email is shown in full after the break.

Included in the bulletin is the standard specification and options pricing for the entry-level M model. The official list price is not included in the email, however we understand BMW will price the 1M Coupé from $99,900 (plus delivery and statutory charges).

We expect BMW Australia to announce a limited run of 100 1M Coupés for local sale.

According to the email BMW Australia has kitted out the 1M Coupé with a comprehensive list of standard goodies. Just a handful of the included standard equipment reads Professional Navigation, Adaptive Headlights, harman/kardon Surround Sound, Voice Control and Internet.

The most notable item on the options list is metallic paint which will apply to two of three colours in the 1M palette. Only Alpine White is a no-cost option, while Valencia Orange and Black Sapphrie will attract a $1700 charge.

It looks like Audi will be giving BMW a free kick by not bringing in its comparable RS3, is BMW’s $100K price tag low enough to allow them to kick a few goals?

Is Volkswagen about to dump its twincharged 1.4 litre engine?

Volkswagen 1.4 litre TSI engine

Despite winning the 2009 International Engine of the Year award speculation is rife that Volkswagen will be discontinuing its twincharged 1.4 litre engine. While the clever use of supercharging and turbocharging offers excellent access to power right through the rev range it’s believed Volkswagen considers the engine to be too complex and expensive.

Until Volkswagen makes a public comment we won’t know for sure if that is their official stance. However, reliability seems to be a real concern for this otherwise charming and efficient engine, too.

At least, that’s the case based on anecdotal evidence posted to our user-based Golf VI 1.4 TSI Tried & Tested review. Of the 16 comments posted to date, half relate to engine complaints. A quick google search of “VW 1.4 TSI engine problems” will also yield many more results than Volkswagen would care for.

So, it’s probably a case of watching this space to see how Volkswagen responds. What effect this news may have on the new Polo GTI or A1 1.4 TFSI is also unclear.

Formula 1: Pirelli expecting two-stop strategy in 2011

2010 Spanish Grand Prix

Autosport brings word that Pirelli expects its tyres will make a significant contribution to the excitement of races in the 2011 Formula One season. Pirelli Motorsport Director, Paul Hembery, said, “We hope to have at least two tyre changes in every race. We want to try to create more of a show.”

Pirelli’s goal of making tyres that cannot last a majority of race distance might seem like a backward step, but last year’s Bridgestone tyres were heavily criticised for being too durable. It was felt this aspect made for long and boring races. In theory, the Pirelli approach makes sense. Let’s hope it works that way in practice, too.

Hembery was trackside at Abu Dhabi for the company’s first day of wet weather testing. There’s one more day to go and you can see pics over at the Autosport gallery.

The first race at Bahrain is under two months away now (13 March) and the F1 teams will start revealing their cars later this month and in early February. We’ll bring coverage of those events as they happen.

Third generation Mercedes-Benz SLK

Mercedes-Benz SLK

First filed 14 January 2011.

Mercedes-Benz has just released information and pics for its third generation SLK. On initial assessment, each progression the SLK takes it improves on its past.

The first gen SLK was a bit, well, most people called it “one of those Kompressor thingys” due to its use of forced-fed engines and subsequent badging, which was quite prominent. It suited its hairdresser demographic perfectly. The second gen SLK certainly improved the styling and made a decent step forward with its chassis tune, as well. A few laps around the Nürburgring by AUSmotive’s editor can attest to that.

Now, the latest SLK, has once again improved on the styling and has now perhaps, finally, matured from the hairdresser tag once and for all. Well, as much as any non-supercar convertible can.

The metal folding roof on the new SLK has a great party trick, too. It’s called Magic Sky Control and essentially there’s a glass opening, much like a conventional sunroof. While it can’t open or tilt, you can effectively close out the light with a switch of a button. There’s a brief example in the official video below.

Euro buyers can order the SLK from next week and they’ll have three choices to begin with. There’s a pair of four cylinders options in the 135kW SLK 200 and 150kW SLK 250. The high-po model, until AMG gets its grubby little hands on this car, is provided by a 3.5 litre V6 in the 225kW SLK 350. All have been mercifully tagged with a BlueEFFICIENCY moniker, as well. Of course, Mercedes are banging on about reductions in fuel use and all sorts of green washing.

Australian buyers should see the SLK on local shores some time after June.

Overall, though, this new SLK is a pretty nice looking machine. Would we lust after one here at AUSmotive HQ? Probably not, but we certainly won’t be dismissing it off hand as we may have done with earlier generations.

There’s a handful of pics and the Mercedes press release for you after the break.

UPDATE 18 January: 30 new pics have now been added.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta launched in Australia

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Alfa Romeo’s spunky little Giulietta has just arrived down under. There’s currently two models on offer, the entry level Giulietta, priced from $36,990 (not including delivery or statutory fees), while the powerful “Cloverleaf” QV model starts at $41,990. Both models can also be optioned with metallic paint ($995) and a full leather/sunroof package ($4000).

In the base spec you get a 125kW 1.4 litre MultiAir engine capable of reaching 100km/h in 7.8 seconds. A lighter foot will reward you with a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.8l/100km. That’s quite reasonable performance, really.

If that’s not enough, though, the 173kW 1750TBi unit is the one for you. As the name suggests, it’s a 1.75 litre four-pot turbo, and can propel you to the speed limit in 6.8 seconds. With a healthy 340Nm of torque on tap from 1900rpm you can access that power at virtually any time, as well. When you’re not in a mad rush you can expect to sip fuel at the rate of around 7.6l/100km.

Actually, the QV looks the value proposition here. For an extra five grand you get the go faster engine along with sports suspension (10mm lower), fancy seats with red stitching and microfibre trim, a Bose stereo and 18″ alloys to go over your flash red brake calipers.

It’s a pretty car, the Giulietta, but for similar pricing, does it make more sense than a comparable Volkswagen Golf, for example? Your heart might well say yes, but we’d love to hear if you’d actually go through with the deal.

More pics and detail from Alfa Romeo after the break. Alfa’s latest price list is also available.

Pagani C9 teaser no.3

Pagani has released its third installment in the build up to the launch of the Zonda successor. This clip is titled “The shape of the wind”, which gives credence to the theory the car, codenamed C9, will be called the Huayra (a South American wind).

Not much detail given away here, check out the clip for yourself after the break. There’s two more teasers to go before the car’s launch on 26 January.

Volkswagen confirmed for WRC in 2012?

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Has Prodrive Chairman Dave Richards spoiled Volkswagen’s party by announcing the German marque’s forthcoming entry to the WRC? In a recent interview at Autosport International Richards claimed, “It’s very clear that Volkswagen are about to announce their return to the World Rally Championship, as well; under the Volkswagen brand rather than Skoda.”

Serious rumours about VW joining the new WRC party emerged last August when Rally Germany was used as the launch event for the Race Touareg 3, which just filled the podium at Dakar 2011. At the same event the course car was biogas powered Scirocco (pictured above). A Scirocco WRC would be a welcome sight in world rallying, let’s hope that’s the model they choose.

If we assume Volkswagen do sign up to the WRC, possibly from the 2012 season, they will join fellow newcomers MINI, along with established players in Citroën and Ford. Richards says it might be hard to attract more factory support, “Quite frankly, it’s difficult to attract many more. There’s not enough prizes to go around.”

MINI Countryman rally car on its way down under

MINI WRC

Speaking at the recent Autosport International event Dave Richards, Prodrive boss, confirmed at least one of his MINI Countryman customer cars will be heading to Australia.

According to Richards, “We’ve got cars going all over the world now. We’ve had orders from Brazil, Australia, the Middle East, the Far East, all across Europe, so you’ll see the MINI out there very quickly.”

Unless someone is keeping a very big secret we can expect the order(s) with Prodrive to be for a Super Production racecar; cars suited to WRC category are not eligible for local competition.

You can watch Richards’ full interview after the break and the snippet about Australia is about 4 minutes 40 seconds in.

Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 wins Dakar 2011

Dakar 2011

A quick shout out to the Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 team of Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) and Timo Gottschalk (Germany) who wrapped up their first Dakar Rally success earlier today.

Indeed it was a great day for Volkswagen as its cars filled the top three positions in the race. Giniel de Villiers, the 2009 winner, came home second and defending champion Carlos Sainz completed the race in third, after heading the field for much of the rally.

This is the second year running that Volkswagen has made a clean-sweep of the podium at Dakar and follows a one-two result in 2009. It seems Volkswagen is just racking up Dakar wins for fun now and they’re yet to be defeated since the rally moved to South America.

Volkswagen’s press release can be read in full after the break.
