Volkswagen brings switchable ESP to Golf GTI & Golf R

Golf GTI ESP button

Volkswagen is set to introduce a revised two-staged ESP system to its MY2012 Golf GTI, Golf R and Scirocco models. The changes mean it will be possible to first switch off the traction control (TCS) and then, by holding the ESP button down for more than 3 seconds, the ESP system can also be deactivated. Until now it has only been possible to turn off TCS on Mk6 Golfs and Sciroccos fitted with ESP.

There is still a small catch, though. While it will be possible to turn off the ESP system altogether it will automatically reactivate itself when the driver applies the brakes. According to Autocar this only applies during an “emergency” braking situation. However, we have included a copy of the relevant page from an MY10 Audi S3 which employs a two-stage ESP system and we suspect Volkswagen will simply adopt the same set up.

It is understood that Volkswagen has moved in reaction to criticism from consumers and media alike that their more sporty models have been too conservative when pushed to the limit.

The question becomes, when is it a good time to leave ESP on and when is a good time to switch it off. We would recommend leaving ESP activated on public roads and only deactivating the system in a trackday scenario where there is usually plenty of run off and, crucially, no oncoming traffic.

A view shared by Autocar tester Steve Sutcliffe who states, “Most of the time, in fact, you’re simply not aware that it’s there, not unless you get very close indeed to the point of no return, which is when you could use a helping hand, after all.”

Pre-production MINI Roadster spied as well

MINI Roadster

Just a few days after a near production ready MINI Coupé was spotted a Roadster version has been caught and snapped as well. These pics give a better example of the retractable rear wing that will be featured on both models. That wing aside, what we can see here meets expectations following the reveal of the Roadster concept back in 2009.

While its Coupé twin is already in series production the soft-top version is still around 12 months away from commencing its build cycle. The market launch of the Roadster/Speedster/name to be confirmed is likely to follow soon after, say March 2012.

The model above wears Cooper S badging on the front quarter panel and it’s expected that MINI will launch the Roadster in Cooper S and JCW trim.

Driver Dynamics – Summer Safe Driving Courses

Driver Dynamics

First filed 16 December 2010.

A short while ago Driver Dynamics approached AUSmotive to support of their Summer Safe Driving Courses. Because we believe in the benefits of good driver education we were happy to help out. The following text has been supplied by Driver Dynamics and if you think you or a member of your family would benefit from such training we urge you to make a booking.

Despite the advances in automotive safety technology and road quality, vehicle accidents continue to be the number one killer of Australians aged under 25. While many factors can contribute to an individual incident, one thing keeps being brought up—are our young drivers being adequately trained?

Driver Dynamics, Victoria’s most experienced driver training school, believes there is certainly room for improvement and has launched a massive state-wide training campaign to help young drivers learn some basic skills that may potentially save their lives!

The Summer Safe Driving Program runs from December to March (the typically highest accident risk time of the year due to the number of people on the roads), and essentially brings affordable driver training to within reach of nearly every Victorian driver. Courses of this type normally cost up to $300, but for the program the cost has been reduced to just $99 per driver.

You can drive in the 2011 Lexus Celebrity Challenge

Lexus CT 200h Celebrity Challenge car

Fancy a drive in this year’s Celebrity Challenge race at the Australian Grand Prix in March? If so, you’re in luck, because there is a guaranteed drive up for grabs with the only barrier being the depth of your pockets.

Okay, the car you get to drive—an otherwise drab CT 200h—may not be the most exciting car to take out on a closed Grand Prix circuit, but it’s still sure to be a load of fun. And you can warm your heart by knowing the proceeds of your purchase will be going to assist the Red Cross Victorian Floods Appeal.

You’ll need pretty deep pockets, though. As of this morning the auction is sitting at $12,101—see eBay for details. The auction ends at 9:47am on Thursday 17 February.

Ferrari responds to Ford’s F150 claims

Ferrord F150

Ferrari has responded to Ford’s claims of trademark infringement over the use of the F150 name by agreeing to rename its 2011 Formula One car the Ferrari 150th Italia. Indeed, Ferrari say this was always the full name of the car, but they abbreviated it to F150 for convenience. Really?!

We think this is all a load of baloney, to be honest. Yes, Ford has a right to protect its trademarks and intellectual property. However, was anyone really going to get a high-tech F1 car seen only on the world’s best racetracks muddled up with a low-tech pickup seen only in front of Moe’s Tavern? Obviously, perhaps, Ferrari agree as well, stating, “It is very difficult to understand Ford’s viewpoint on the matter.”

Anyway, Ferrari has obliged and it sounds like Ford won’t be getting any compensation from Ferrari. You can read their full statement below.

Geneva preview: BMW Vision ConnectedDrive

BMW Vision Connected Drive

BMW has jumped the gun ahead of the Geneva Motor Show by releasing images of their star concept model, the Vision ConnectedDrive. While over 30 images of the concept have been made available, the finer detail is being saved for its full reveal next month.

For now, though, just look at that side profile. A finer looking 21st century roadster you’re unlikely to see. As for what this ConnectedDrive study is all about, this grab from BMW’s brief press release captures it best:

The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive study demonstrates current and future methods of mobile networking in a particularly focused way. The design and technology of this spectacular roadster are aimed at making the vehicle an integral part of a networked world. Comfort, safety and the infotainment experience in the vehicle can be precisely optimised by the innovative functionality, individually tailored to suit the requirements of both the driver and passenger.

UPDATE: A video from BMW’s YouTube channel has been added below.

Volkswagen Golf24 says happy 35th to the GTI

Volkswagen Golf24

Back in 1976 a handful of Volkswagen engineers dared to dream. That dream became the Golf GTI; the hot hatch was born. To celebrate its 35th birthday Volkswagen Motorsport has raided the parts bin and created this awesome weapon ready to take on the world’s toughest endurance race, the Nürburgring 24 hour.

Fitted with an enhanced version of the Audi TT RS engine the 2.5 litre turbo pumps out 440hp and 540Nm. There’s also an all-wheel drive system in place to make sure the flared pocket rocket can maintain dignity.

More pics and detail can be read over at AUSringers.

Ford wants Ferrari to stop using F150 name

Ferrari F150 logo

Until late January, when Ferrari launched their 2011 F1 car, the name F150 immediately conjured up images of hillbillies chowing down some grits for breakfast before heading off to… well, let’s not go there, lest Ford’s lawyers come our way as well. The point being Ford’s F-series truck range is well known the world over. And it just so happens the F-150, launched in 1975, is the most successful model in that range.

Ferrari has put noses seriously out of joint at Dearborn by calling their latest F1 car the F150. Last year it was the F10, so it stood to reason this year’s car would be known as the F11. However, 2011 marks 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. So, it also seems perfectly reasonable for such an iconic brand like Ferrari to honour that occasion by referring to it in the name of their ultimate automotive creation.

Well, too bad, say Ford and they are currently suing Ferrari for, among other things, trademark infringement over the use of the F150 name. On the face of it, that seems fair enough. Although, the Ford allegations cite irreparable damage to it’s F-150 trademark. We’re not so sure that is really the case, but that’s for the US District Court in Detroit to decide, not us.

Further, Ford isn’t happy at Ferrari’s microsite for their F1 car—www.ferarrif150.com—and they’re submitting a US$100,000 damages claim under the US Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. They also want Ferrari to cough up any profits they earn in the US by using the F150 name.

This could get interesting, we’ll keep a watching brief and wait to see what happens next.

Pre-production MINI Coupé spied

MINI Coupé

Auto snappers CarPix have caught this pre-production MINI Coupé near BMW’s headquarters in Munich. At first glance things appear basically the same as the concept model revealed in mid-2009. However, a closer look reveals a few changes. Easily spotted are the updated rear light treatment and other LCI styling cues. They’re to be expected, of course, but something we haven’t seen before is a retractable rear spolier, which can be seen by following the source link below.

The model in this snap appears to be the range-topping JCW version, evidenced by the fat exhaust tips, plus the JCW-style wheels and brake calipers. While BMW’s renowned swirly camouflage pattern covers most roof details you can see a glimpse of red paint to match the mirrors. The red roof, black body is another key JCW colour combo.

We reported last December that production for the Coupé has commenced. That would indicate that this car is very close to production trim and is likely undergoing final evaluations before release. We should see the R58 Coupé on sale overseas before the end of the year. It’s possible Australian sales could begin very late in 2011, but pencil in next year if you’re like us and can’t wait to drive one.

It’s Heidfeld v Senna for the vacant Renault seat

Nick Heidfeld & Bruno Senna

Following Robert Kubica’s recent accident, which may cost the Pole his F1 career and will almost certainly see him out of F1 for 2011, Lotus Renault GP is in need of a replacement driver. And quite soon with the next test window opening in Jerez tonight (Australian time).

With five reserve drivers on their roster—yes, that’s right five—you’d think it would be a safe bet they would recruit from within. However, this now appears increasingly unlikely. Word on the interwebz is that Nick Heidfeld is the favourite to get the gig. A theory loosely supported by an official statement from Lotus Renault GP, which you can read below.

The reason for chasing an experienced driver like Heidfeld is twofold. First, the talent in reserve for Renault is mostly young, exuberant, but inexperienced in developing a Formula One car. Second, the new R31 features a radical forward exiting exhaust which requires a sage guiding hand through its development process. Remember, Kubica set the fastest time in Valencia last week, so it’s undoubted the R31 has great potential.

Heidfeld made his F1 debut in 2000 and has driven for Prost, Sauber, Jordan, Williams, BMW Sauber and Sauber once again in the latter part of last year. He has experience. Bruno Senna, on the other hand, does not. He was widely expected to land the role of filling Robert’s shoes, but it looks less likely now.

There is hope for Senna, though, as both he and Heidfeld will get track time at Jerez and the results there will play a large part in deciding who joins Vitaly Petrov on the grid at Bahrain in a few weeks time
