Targa Tasmania 2011: George Town

Targa Tasmania 2011

Jason White signalled his intent for the 2011 Targa Tasmania event by setting the quickest time at today’s Prologue in George Town.

The Jason and John White team are the defending champions and also won the rally back in 2005. Their Lamborghini Gallardo was literally and figuratively on fire as the Whites were almost five seconds faster than their nearest competitors, 2009 Targa Tasmania winners Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett (Nissan GT-R).

A selection of images from “Day 0” at George Town can be seen after the break. The town stages at Targa are often about entertainment and the fire-breathing antics of the Lamborghinis always please the crowd. Also gaining plenty of cheers are the, but many classic Australian V8s as they powerslide around corners.

Walter Röhrl talks about his Porsche 911 SC at Targa Tasmania

Dual world rally champ Walter Röhrl is in Australia for the 2011 Targa Tasmania rally. It’s part of Porsche Cars Australia’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Röhrl is driving the 911 SC he drove in the 1981 San Remo rally, where he almost beat the all-conquering Audi Quattros. It is considered one of the best ever drives by the rally ace.

In this video from Porsche you can hear Walter Röhrl and co-driver Christian Geistdoerfer reminisce about the glory days of the 911 SC.

Official pics of BMW Concept M5 released

BMW Concept M5

When details of a new car are leaked to the net you can be sure official material is soon to follow. And BMW has played to the script accordingly by publishing 19 images and a short video of its Concept M5.

It might be labelled a “concept” but this is the real deal. Some very minor details may change between now and the market launch in September, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to notice them.

We’ve still got a day or two to wait for the full technical specs on the new F10 M5, so for now, just enjoy these pics.

A press statement from BMW also gives a brief rundown of the other models to be shown at Auto Shanghai later this week.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 prepares for endurance season

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

The racing version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG kicked off its first full season of competition at the Nürburgring last weekend. The SLS AMG GT3 finished third and fourth in the opening round of the 2011 VLN series.

Before any car can race, though, it needs to meet strict safety regulations. Prior to the VLN season debut Mercedes-Benz released details of the safety measures added to the “Gullwing” racer.

As well as the expected roll cage and so on, the SLS GT3 features a CFRP strengthened race seat and a pyrotechnic system that activates when required to release the hinges on the gullwing doors. Polycarbonate windows serve dual purposes by reducing weight, but they are also easier to remove in case of emergency.

The SLS AMG GT3 is a great looking bit of race kit. This year we’ll find out how good it is under some of the toughest racing conditions around.

More detail and pics from Mercedes can be viewed after the break.

Fancy a look inside BMW’s secret M garage?

The original M3 ute

The E92 M3 ute revealed on April Fool’s Day wasn’t the first M3 ute built by BMW. That honour belongs to the E30 M3 you see in the photo above.

That car and many more have been photographed deep inside BMW’s secret M garage by Bimmerporst. The secret stash is like a backup of M GmbH’s finest work, with an example of every single model created by M division locked away for safe keeping. Many of which you will never have known existed.

Follow the source link below for more photos. It’s an amazing sight.

UPDATE: Bimmerpost has been kind enough to share a video of their tour, which you can now see after the break.

BMW Concept M5 images leaked

BMW M5 (F10)

BMW has just given the new F10 M5 an invitation-only preview to a select group of motoring hacks. Of course, BMW imposed an embargo on any info and images from that preview. It goes without saying, then, that images of the concept model have now been leaked.

The origin of the images appears to be an obscure Russian website and given the limited audience that has seen this new M5 you have to wonder who really has leaked these pics.

For now, no engine specs or technical data has emerged. Fear not, BMW will release official details in the next few days anyway, when they launch the Concept M5 at Auto Shanghai.

Based on these images there’s few surprises as far as the look goes. It’s understated brawn, as is the German way. The gloss black wheels look good against the cool silver paintwork. Signature M quad-exhaust tips complete the usual teutonic look.

It’s understood the new M5 will feature a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 derived from the X5 M along with a 7-speed DCT. Performance is sure to be brisk and as soon as we hear more we will let you know.

Red Bull Ring next F1 circuit?

Red Bull Ring

Red Bull Racing got in on the act for April Fool’s Day by releasing plans for a new “Red Bull Ring” racing circuit. Shaped like the company’s famous logo, turns one through four are understood to be known as Horner’s Corners.

To be fair, Red Bull does own the former A1-Ring in Austria, and it will host a round of the German Touring Car series this year. Just don’t start thinking you’ll be seeing this sixty-six turn race track any time soon.

Tesla v Top Gear: Andy Wilman speaks

Andy Wilman

Andy Wilman, Top Gear’s Executive Producer, has taken the unusual step of publicly responding to Tesla’s legal challenge with an entry on the Top Gear Transmission blog. Importantly, he addresses the allegation that Top Gear had prepared its verdict on the car before filming for their review began.

Last week Tesla issued a writ against Top Gear claiming defamation and malicious falsehood over the show’s review of the Tesla Roadster (Series 12, Episode 7).

In Wilman’s blog he counters Tesla’s general criticisms, but it is his words on the claim that Top Gear had pre-judged the electric-powered sportscar before driving it, as evidenced by scripts seen by a Tesla employee, that carries the most interest.

First, Wilman states, “The truth is, Top Gear had already driven the car prior to filming, to enable us to form a view on it in advance.”

BMW preparing a new CSL-style lightweight M3

BMW M3 CSL preview

More news from the recent BMW press event held in Munich. This time Autocar brings word of a new M3 CSL that will sit between the regular M3 and the more extreme M3 GTS.

It has not been confirmed that the model will be called a CSL, rather outgoing BMW M boss, Dr Kay Segler, said the car will be “special design model focusing on lightweight construction” with “”several other surprises.”

Full details will be revealed when the car is launched at the Nürburgring 24 hour race in June.
