MINI motorsport readying itself for 24 hour enduro

MINI motorsport

We just stumbled across this teaser that indicates MINI will have an official presence at this year’s Nürburgring 24 hour race.

The MINI motorsport website states, in part, “MINI will also be demonstrating its staying power in the 2011 motor racing season, when it faces the competition at the demanding 24-hour race on 25 and 26 June.

“Whether at Pflanzgarten, in the Carousel or on the Döttinger Höhe: this year fans can look forward to a new challenger from MINI in the ‘Green Hell’.”

Apparently full details will be revealed soon and we’ll be on the case as soon as we know more.

Nico and Michael: Baby boomers

The Mercedes-Benz comedy team is at it again and has followed up the “Compliments” ad with this new clip “Decision”. It’s a nice lighthearted way to illustrate the intra team rivalry faced by Formula 1 drivers. Just a shame the Mercedes GP team isn’t performing as well as these ads are.

2011 Malaysian Grand Prix – Post-race press conference

2011 Malaysian Grand Prix

Another commanding display when it mattered most has seen Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) claim his second Grand Prix victory of the year in Malaysia today. Most pundits wouldn’t have been surprised by first place, but seeing Jenson Button (McLaren) and Nick Heidfeld (Renault) take the minor placing probably raised a few eyebrows.

The Red Bull cars were again affected by their troublesome KERS. For Mark Webber, the frustration emerged immediately when his KERS failed on his way to the grid. Subsequently he made a poor start and was mid-pack after the first few corners. That he managed to climb his way back to fourth place should be commended.

Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) and Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) have been slugged with a 20 second penalty after the race by stewards as a result of an incident between the pair early in the race. Alonso was lucky enough that the penalty did not affect his sixth placing. However, Hamilton has moved from seventh back to eighth, promoting Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber).

The full transcript from the post-race press conference featuring the first three drivers across the line can be read after the break.

Targa Tasmania 2011: Day 4 & 5 update

Targa Tasmania 2011

Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett today held on to win their second Targa Tasmania rally in three years. In their Nissan GT-R the 2009 champs carried a comfortable lead into the final day and drove well to secure victory by 3 minutes and 39 seconds.

Wet weather on the last two days certainly provided tough conditions for all competitors and many found their limits. Yesterday, especially, claimed many competitors with the heavy rain in the afternoon.

Second in the modern outright placings was Dean Herridge (Subaru WRX STi), almost two minutes ahead of Matthew Sims (Nissan GT-R).

Winner in the classic outright category was Rex Broadbent (Porsche 911 Carrera 911 RS), from David Cooper (Holden Torana A9X) and Nick Ellis (Porsche 911 Carrera). This makes it five wins on the trot for Broadbent in the classic competition.

2011 Malaysian Grand Prix – Post-qualifying press conference

2011 Malaysian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) has nailed his third pole position in a row. The young German finished qualifying at the Sepang circuit with a best time of 1:34.870, one tenth faster than Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) who’s quickest lap was 1:34.974.

Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) could only manage the third fastest lap (1:35.179), despite regularly heading the time sheets during practice.

Crucially for Vettel and Webber they will start the race on the right side of the track. Previously pole position in Malaysia has been on the left side and has been changed at the request of the drivers who think the switch will offer better grip at the start.

Targa Tasmania 2011: Day 3 update

Targa Tasmania

After another dramatic day on Tasmania’s roads it now appears as though the 2011 Targa Tasmania title is Tony Quinn’s to lose. At the wheel of his Nissan GT-R, the 2009 Targa winner has extended his lead in the modern outright category to over two minutes.

The Audi TT RS of Matt Close remains in second place, while Matthew Sims in a Nissan GT-R has held on to his third place. More fancied competitors such as Steve Glenney (Mazda RX8 SP) and Kevin Weeks (Lamborghini Gallardo) suffered accident and mechanical problems that put them out of the race.

It was a pleasant surprise to see the Porsche 911 SC of Walter Röhrl at the Silverdome this morning and he rejoined the action with a 20 minute time penalty following yesterday’s issues.

Andrew Miedecke (Ford Perana) is leading classic outright by 53 seconds. Brendan Reeves continues his stranglehold on the 2WD showroom category enjoying a lead of more than five minutes.

It was a better day for AUSmotive’s team leader Andrew Robinson too. While the MINI John Cooper Works is still failing to make boost Robbo was able to negotiate an otherwise trouble-free day. Importantly, all times were met to maintain eligibility for Targa plates and that now remains the goal for the next two days.

Televsion highlights from Southern Cross TV can be seen after the break. This includes footage the Alfa Romeo GTV accident shown above.

Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class revealed

Mercedes-Benz A Class preview

This funky little hatchback is on its way to Auto Shanghai, but Mercedes-Benz has shared these pics ahead of the public debut. The Concept A-Class might have come from another planet, according to Benz, but we reckon it’s more like the spawn of Chris Bangle’s flame surfacing, with a few soft edges.

The Concept A-Class actually draws it’s inspiration from the F800 concept we first saw early last year. Regardless, we like that the new A-Class is moving away from its high-top look and reckon it’s heading in the right direction.

With a 155kW 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder is this the first genuine Golf GTI from the world’s oldest car maker? The Concept A-Class has a dual clutch transmission, as is fast becoming the norm, and brings higher spec features down the food chain, such as full LED headlamps and radar based collision warning systems.

This concept is pretty wild—check the interior pics after the break—and it will be interesting to see just what the final model looks like once it hits the production line.

M5 watch: Performance specs revealed

BMW Concept M5

Ahead of the car’s official “concept” launch Autocar has revealed the performance specs of the forthcoming BMW M5.

As expected the F10 M5 will be powered by a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 sourced from the X5 M. Upgrades to the induction and exhaust system improve throttle response and also boost power to 552bhp (410kW) and torque to 510lb ft (690Nm).

Apparently that’s enough to propel the F10 M5 to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. A deed helped along by a smooth shifting 7-speed DCT gearbox.

In surprising news, perhaps, it would appear an all-wheel drive M5 is on the cards as well. It’s understood this will help BMW compete with its main German rivals in the cooler North American regions.

It’s a heavy blighter, though, at around 1830kg. Although, that’s very close to the V10 powered E92 E60 M5, thanks to the use of carbon fibre and aluminium body panels on the new car.

Targa Tasmania 2011: Day 2 update

Targa Tasmania

Targa Tasmania claimed some big scalps today, enabling Tony Quinn (Nissan GT-R) to extend his lead in the Modern outright category to healthy 1 minute 32 seconds. Quinn’s closest rivals, Jason White (Lamborghini Gallardo) and  Steve Glenney (Mazda RX8 SP), both suffered dramas today and sit outside of the top 10.

Matt Close (Audi TT RS) now sits in second place, with Matthew Sims (Nissan GT-R) in third a further one second behind.

Unfortunately for rally organisers, international drawcard Walter Röhrl was forced to retire from the event today after his Porsche 911 SC succumbed to mechanical gremlins.

Meanwhile, AUSmotive’s fortunes also took a dive with Andrew Robinson’s MINI John Cooper Works having boost issues for the latter part of the day. During our afternoon service checks we also discovered some suspension damage that needed urgent attention. The car is ready to race again tomorrow, but the boost problem was not resolved and the MINI will be running more like a standard Cooper.

Televsion highlights from Southern Cross TV can be seen after the break.

Audi hasn’t confirmed any other details aside from the launch date, so expect the usual mix of four cylinder diesel and petrol engines. For en extra surprise maybe they’ll have a hybrid model too.

Drive Thru: Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI

Audi A7 Sportback

Beauty comes in the shape of many things. One such example is the Audi A7 Sportback. It’s the latest four-door “coupé” to hit local shores and helps to keep Audi at the vanguard of this current automotive trend.

Inside and out the A7 is all class. Audi has done well to keep the production car very close to the pathway set by the Sportback Concept presented at Detroit in early 2009. The look is refined elegance, as you would expect. It is clear, also, Audi’s biggest Sportback has a strong visual presence on the road and it certainly demanded attention from several onlookers during our test.

Targa Tasmania 2011: Day 1 update

Targa Tasmania

Tony Quinn leads Targa Tasmania after Day 1 of the island rally. Negotiating his Nissan GT-R successfully through the opening day the 2009 Targa Tasmania winner holds a narrow three second lead in the modern outright category. In second place is yesterday’s Prologue winner Jason White. Sitting nicely in third, 27 seconds behind the leader, is 2008 Targa champion Steve Glenney in his Mazda RX8 SP.

Brendan Reeves, driving a Mazda 3 MPS, leads the 2WD showroom category by a comfortable 65 seconds from Mike Sinclair, who is at the wheel of a Skoda Ovtavia RS wagon.

In classic outright a Torana A9X driven by David Cooper is 12 seconds in front of Andrew Miedecke, who is at the wheel of a Ford Perana. Two-time world rally champion Walter Röhrl sits in equal fifth place just over one minute behind Cooper.

Closer to AUSmotive’s immediate interests, Andrew Robinson is leading his class (9MSB) in his MINI John Cooper Works and sits in sixth in category. He had a good day overall, with just a minor off causing damage to the front-left rim. With a spare wheel fitted “Robbo” is now all set for a big Day 2 in Tasmania’s north east.

Televsion highlights from Southern Cross TV can be seen after the break.
