SUV rally series planned for 2012

SUV racers

Word has just come through from the Australian Rally Championship (ARC) that they have announced the framework for a Soccer Mum Challenge an SUV racing series.

Love them or hate them SUVs represent the fastest growing segment in the new vehicle market. Which leads ARC organisers to call their new series “Australia’s most market relevant motorsport.”

To begin with the formula will be based around production models with modifications allowed to exhausts, brakes and suspension.

CEO of the Bosch Australian Rally Championship Scott Pedder explains, “The SUVs can be two wheel drive or four, can come from any segment of the SUV market from small, to medium, large and even luxury, and their engines can be any size and capacity.

“The only limitation is that we won’t allow turbo-petrol engines, it will be open to only normally-aspirated and turbo-diesel power plants. We’ve done this to keep the playing field as level as possible and to encourage as many manufacturers and types of vehicles as possible.”

Organisers say as many as 50 models currently offered for sale in Australia will be eligible and they hope to attract a strong field of factory-backed and privateer entrants.

We can only assume the series will be run on dirt-roads as well, and not just the safe confines of city streets.

OFFICIAL: MINI Coupé photos & specifications

MINI Coupe

Today MINI has released official pics and detail about its new R58 Coupé model. The “helmet roof” and two-up seating are the most obvious differences from the bread and butter MINI hatch. This info comes just a couple of weeks after MINI gave us an official preview.

You can see from the pics below that the roof design has an almost sculptural feel in the way it integrates with the high-mount rear spoiler. Air is forced down to the bootlid spoiler which automatically raises at 80km/h. The Coupé is a bit front heavy so we suspect MINI has had to work hard to get more downforce over the rear axle.

Being a two-seater there is additional storage space behind the seats, as well as a cubby hole through to the rear luggage compartment. Inside the low roof line has been compensated for by scalloping the roof liner. We’re not so sure about how that looks and will reserve judgement until a later date. Taller drivers will no doubt approve of the feature.

The Coupé is built on the Cabriolet platform, which means stronger chassis components have been used. Add to this the brace running between the C-pillars and you have the stiffest MINI made to date. The downside of that is the Coupé weighs around a tank of fuel more than the hatch.

There are four model designations for the Coupé:

  • MINI Cooper Coupé – 90kW/160Nm, 0-100km/h 9.0s
  • MINI Cooper SD Coupé – 105kW/305Nm, 0-100km/h 7.9s
  • MINI Cooper S Coupé – 135kW/240Nm (+ 20Nm overboost), 0-100km/h 6.9s
  • MINI John Cooper Works Coupé – 155kW/260Nm (+ 20Nm overboost), 0-100km/h 6.4s

More pics and full details, including a detailed press release with technical specifications, are all yours after the break. We can expect the MINI Coupé to make its Australian debut towards the end of the year.

Sebastien Ogier wins the Acropolis Rally

Sebastien Ogier, Citroen DS3 WRC

It was all Citroën in Greece over the weekend as Sebastien Ogier notched up his third WRC win for the year, adding the Acropolis Rally trophy to his cabinet. On Day 1 privateer Petter Solberg placed his DS3 WRC in a commanding lead only to be swallowed up by the works entries on Day 2.

The final day saw the two Sebastien’s fighting over the lead and ultimately the race win. Seven time world champs Sebastien Loeb started the day with a slender advantage over his teammate. Ogier, though, wasn’t giving in and fought hard to eventually claim victory by 10.5 seconds.

It’s the 22nd time Citroën has achieved a one-two victory and it sets a new benchmark for the WRC. Remarkably, Loeb’s second place marks the 100th time he has stood on the podium.

After the race Ogier paid tribute to his team’s reliability, “I’d really like to thank the whole team for two things. One, it gave Seb and I the same chances to battle for victory, and I’m proud to have honoured their trust with a win. Secondly, I have to underline the reliability of the DS3 WRC, which had a problem-free three days in a race that was run at high speed.”

The 2011 WRC season is just over half complete now. Citroen has won six of the seven races, while Ford won the opening event in Sweden. Loeb currently stands atop the championship standings on 146 points, ahead of Ford’s Mikko Hirvonen (129pts) and Ogier (124pts).

Rally Finland is the next event on the 2011 calendar and will be held on 28–30 July.

Sport Auto laps the BMW 1M around the Ring

BMW 1M Coupe

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is the darling of the moment, attracting headlines around the world. After our own test drive we can see why. So, it’s little surprise there is great interest in how fast the 1M is around the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife. Thanks to authoritative German mag Sport Auto and its latest Supertest with noted driver Horst von Saurma we now have an answer.

That answer is 8 minutes 15 seconds.

On the unofficial Nürburgring lap chart that places the 1M in some heady company. Here’s a shortlist of relevant cars also tested by Horst von Saurma:

  • 8:05 – BMW E92 M3 (DCT)
  • 8:09 – Audi TT RS
  • 8:15 – BMW 1M Coupé
  • 8:17 – Porsche Cayman S
  • 8:20 – Audi RS 3

Von Saurma thinks the 1M would be faster if its suspension setup was better tuned for the Ring. Interestingly he also says the suspension is too hard for daily use.

FOR SALE: One-off Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG ‘Concept 358’

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

You may recall this ‘Jaffa concept’ from last year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Well, if you liked it, and we know a lot of people did, the car is now for sale and could be yours.

Correctly titled the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG ‘Concept 358’, it has been painted in special designo Pearl Orange paint. It’s the only one in Australia and one of just four in the world.

Mercedes has also fitted the AMG Performance Package Plus, adding an extra 22kW of power to the headline stat, which now sits at 358kW. Also included, for added peace of mind, are forged pistons nicked from the SLS AMG.

Currently advertised on carsales for $209,963 the ‘Jaffa’ is a fair step up from a standard C63, but exclusivity costs I guess. Thanks to Edward from Mercedes-Benz Berwick for bringing this to our attention. Give him a call, you know you want to!

BMW Australia hopes to double 1M allocation

BMW 1M Coupe

First filed 9 June.

Car Advice brings some ripping news for fans of the BMW 1M Coupé. Like most markets, BMW Australia has been receiving high demand for the 1M and they have been working hard to secure more cars from the fatherland.

Piers Scott, BMW Australia representative told Car Advice, “BMW in Munich has been under constant pressure since we announced the car for the Australian market, and we’re confident that we’ll be able to offer more cars to our dealers, but we just need the green light from head office.”

While a final number has not been agreed, it’s hoped the new allocation could see as many as 200 1M Coupé find their way to Australia.

An official number wasn’t given when BMW Australia confirmed pricing for the $99,900 1M, but they did say it would be limited to “around 100 units”. Word on the street says those 100 cars have already been snapped up, so a potential doubling of the allocation is great news for those who may be on a waiting list hoping for cancelled orders.

MINI JCW Challenge Edition spied

MINI JCW Challenge Edition

Early last year MINI Australia launched a parts bin special called the JCW Challenge Edition. It was pretty much a few options thrown together at a reduced price and it was only offered for sale down under. Now, though, it would appear MINI HQ is raising the bar considerably by testing out a new prototype at the Nürburgring. Could this be a purpose-built JCW Challenge Edition?

From the spy pics you can see there’s radically revised front and rear spoilers. Indeed, the rear diffuser look to have been heavily inspired by the MINI Challenge race cars.

It’s generally been considered the 155kW engine in the regular JCW is close to its maximum tuning potential. Let’s hope MINI has found a few new ponies in its back shed? Watch this space.

MINI Coupé spied with undisguised “helmet roof”

MINI Coupe prototype

UK mag Car has snapped the first undisguised photos of the distinctive helmet roof on the MINI Coupé. Based on the image above it looks as though MINI has been true to the 2009 concept.

From what we know at the moment the Coupé will only be offered with a contrasting silver or black roof and mirror caps. With the exception of black, which can be ordered with same colour body and roof, all other colours will feature a contrasting roof colour.

MINI will also be offering “viper stripes” as a factory option with the Coupé. The stripes change colour as they go over the roof. You can just see the two blue stripes on the back of the rear spoiler above. On the bonnet (see pic below) the stripes are silver, matching the roof colour.

Expect official news from MINI in the very near future.

Drive Thru: BMW 1 Series M Coupé

BMW 1M

Regular readers will know Australian deliveries of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé have been taking place over the past week or two. One has even ended up in our hometown of Canberra. AUSmotive was lucky enough to be offered a brief drive thanks to owners John and Dianne.

First impressions? It’s a great looking car. You really do just want to get in and drive the thing as soon as you see it.

You either love or hate the design of the 1 Series range; there are rarely any middling opinions. We’ve always admired the way the 1 Series Coupé looks and with M division offering unique styling cues, like those almost comically beefed up guards and an aggressive body kit, we think the 1M has reached a new peak.

The special order black wheels on John and Dianne’s car look superb as well. They complement the already gutsy presence the 1M has from factory.
