Meet the Aventador J Speedster

Lamborghini Aventador J Speedster

It’s expected Lamborghini will be bringing an Aventador Roadster to the Geneva Motor Show. But this Aventador-based creation seems to have caught most people off guard.

With a slightly oddball title of Aventador J Speedster, we’re led to believe, it sounds a bit like a lead actor from a Hollywood B movie. Note the lack of a front windscreen and overt rear spolier. That’s if you can take your eyes of those massive side scoops.

Who knows what this beast will be powered by, we’ll assume it’s based on the 6.5 litre V12 from the now apparently mundane Aventador. We should have the answers for you in the next day or two.

In the meantime Lamborghini has dropped a teaser which we think links to this car. Note the J at the end of the clip.

Bathurst 12 Hour

Reflections on the 2012 Bathurst 12 Hour

2012 Bathurst 12 Hour

So the 2012 Bathurst 12 Hour has been run and won. We’ll start by saying this race should be one of the premiere events on the Australian motorsport calendar. It should comfortably form part of a ‘big three’ alongside the traditional V8 Supercars 1000km race at Bathurst and the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

At the moment the Bathurst 12 Hour barely registers a blip on the radar of mainstream motorsport in this country. We’ll discuss more on that and the event’s future a bit later.

By now you’ll be aware that ‘international’ Audi crew were able to successfully defend their title. Marc Basseng, part of the 2011 winning trio, was unable to make it back to due to scheduling conflicts, but Christer Jöns comfortably stepped into Basseng’s shoes to ably assist Christopher Mies and Darryl O’Young in their defence.

On paper the winning margin of over one minute to second place might make it appear as though the #1 Audi, which started the race from pole position, had it pretty easy. Of course, no endurance race is ever easy and that was especially the case this year.

Mercedes C63 AMG Black lands down under

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black

Mercedes-Benz Australia is making a big deal about the first C63 AMG Coupé Black Series making its way to our shores. And why wouldn’t they. With 380kW on tap from a handbuilt 6.3 litre V8 and a kick arse body kit it’s a car sure to win admirers from all walks of life.

The car in the photos is painted in Diamond White and features matte black wheels as well as the AMG aero package. It’s the first of just 32 C63 AMG Blacks coming to Australia, all have been sold, and it will make its first public appearance at the Australian Grand Prix.

Perez quickest on Day 3 in Barcelona

Sergio Perez, Sauber C31, Barcelona pre-season testing

Sergio Perez has recorded the fastest time so far in any of the seven pre-season test days at Barcelona. And with just one day of testing to go before the Australian Grand Prix things are getting tight at the top of the timesheet.

Perez negotiated the Circuit de Catalunya in 1:22.094, just nine one thousandths ahead of Jenson Button. While Australian young gun Daniel Ricciardo was six one hundredths back. Indeed, less than one second covered the first nine drivers.

Lotus, fastest on the previous two days with Romain Grosjean at the wheel, were relegated to slowest in the hands of Kimi Raikkonen. The 2007 world champion complained about the steering in the E20 and the team lost around an hour to rectify the problem.

Light afternoon rain interrupted proceedings in the afternoon with most teams attempting race simulations. A few drivers went out on intermediates, while some chose to remain indoors.

Red Bull ran a new update, including revised exhaust layout and new front wing. However, seeing Webber only eighth fastest is not of any real concern. He did not do any qualifying-style runs and was still within touching distance of Perez.

Although, Webber is cautious about reading pre-season form and expects stiff competition in Melbourne. “Everyone today was in the 1m22s so that is not hanging around at Barcelona these days. So there are a lot of quick teams, a lot of fast cars and we need to continue to work hard,” Webber said in an interview with Autosport.

When asked if he thought the field was closer at the top than it had been in recent years Mark replied, “I think so, the pack is very tight. As I touched on several times that we have run, it is very tight between all the teams and Q2 [in Melbourne] will be interesting.”

VW continues Polo R WRC development

Volkswagen Polo R WRC

Sebastien Ogier and Carlos Sainz have been busy in Spain recently continuing the development of the Polo R WRC. Volkswagen will start racing the Polo in the WRC from next year and plan to hit the ground running.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen explains, “Around 70 per cent of the WRC consists of gravel tracks, about 20 per cent of asphalt and roughly 10 per cent of ice and snow. The gravel test in Spain served to simulate the roughest WRC sections and to take the car to its load and stress limits. Particularly chassis components such as the hub carriers, dampers and suspension components were successfully tested in the limit range.”

Carlos Sainz is cautiously optimistic about the hopes for Volkswagen, “I have a lot of confidence in the squad and the Polo R WRC will no doubt be a big hit. But we mustn’t forget that 2013 will be the Polo’s first year in the WRC whereas the competition will have been active there for many years.”

More pics after the break. There’s an official video with interviews from Ogier and Sainz, too. See if you dig the 1970s Pink Floyd-inspired soundtrack.

Grosjean quickest on Day 2 in Barcelona

Romain Grosjean, Lotus E20, Barcelona

The Lotus E20 has once again shown the F1 field a clean pair of heels with Romain Grosjean improving on yesterday’s effort to post a best time of 1:22.614. Jean-Eric Vergne was next best over half a second behind, with Sebastian Vettel three quarters of a second back.

Unusual for the pre-season testing so far Grosjean’s best lap was recorded late in the day. He was third fastest in the morning session, but he threw on a set of softs for a few late laps to claim top spot on the timesheets.

The day went mostly without drama, save for a minor fire to Vergne’s Toro Rosso at the end of the morning session and a driveline issue with Hulkenberg’s Force India just after the interval. Both drivers were unable to resume.

Kimi Raikkonen will get his chance to show us what he can do in the E20 for the two final days of testing before the Australian Grand Prix.

Rubens Barrichello signs IndyCar deal

Tony Kanaan and Rubens Barrichello

Rubens Barrichello has put his sacking from the Williams F1 Team behind him by signing a new deal with the KV Racing Technology IndyCar team. He will join good friend and fellow Brazilian Tony Kanaan.

“I am thrilled, it is something very new to me,” Barrichello said. “I need to thank everyone involved, especially Tony because he has been involved for a long time.”

“This is a new experience, but I am very very happy. With all my experience I will start as a rookie, but I think I will get better as the year progresses,” added the 39-year-old. “My main thing is to be an addition to KV Racing Technology. They have been doing very well and Tony brought the team to a different level last year, so I hope with my contribution we can build on this and take the team to another level. I am extremely happy and have a big smile on my face.”

Kanaan finished the IZOD IndyCar Series in fifth place last year and he’s pretty happy with his new teammate. “I am very excited to be returning to KV Racing Technology not only with a two year deal but also to have Rubens Barrichello as my teammate,” Kanaan said. “We have always dreamed about racing together but never imagined it would actually happen and certainly not in the near future or in IndyCars.”

Toyota 86 convertible given green light

Toyota 86 convertible rendering

The Toybaru will be going topless, according to chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. Speaking to Autobild, Tada said, “The GT 86 was designed from the outset [so] that we can build it as a convertible.”

Last year we showed you a rendering of a Subaru BRZ convertible. A decision is yet to be made on the production of a topless BRZ, but if Toyota does it you’d expect Subaru won’t want to miss out.

We’re not really sure if chopping the roof off the Toyota 86 is the way to go for this particular car, but we don’t make the decisions at Toyota HQ!

Updated Audi A5/S5 range now on sale in Australia

Updated Audi A5/S5 range

In July last year Audi gave its A5/S5 range a mid-cycle facelift. That range is now on sale in Australia. A revised list of prices and press information are available after the break.

Briefly, the new A5/S5 features Audi’s latest LED daytime running light design as well as other exterior and interior cosmetic enhancements. For the local range 125kW 1.8 TFSI and 130kW 2.0 TDI engines have been introduced. They join the familiar 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI options.

Updates to the electromechanical power steering help reduce fuel consumption by as much as 0.3l/100km across the board. Who would have thought power steering systems would demand so much fuel?
