1125bhp, two cars & the world’s best racetrack

Chris Harris drives the Ariel Atom V8 and Noble M600 at the Nurburgring

The Ariel Atom V8 has 475bhp and weighs less than 600kg. The Noble M600 has 650bhp and tips the scales around the 1200kg mark. They’re some healthy ingredients for some seriously healthy speed.

Driving what is little more than a chassis with an engine and four wheels, the Atom V8 is sure to be exhilarating driving it in an underground car park. With no roof, on the worshipped tarmac of the Nordschleife in Germany, it must be as frightening as it is mind blowingly fun. Similarly, the Noble, with the apparent safety of overhead protection is most likely easily forgotten at over 300km/h heading into the kink of the Nürburgring’s main straight.

And so Chris Harris took these two cars to the Ring for the first time ever and filmed a couple of laps. He was there as part of a Destination Nürburgring private track day (sounds like fun).

To be honest, this is not really his best work and the editing, in parts, leaves a little to be desired. Thankfully, they have at least presented two laps of the Nordschleife in the correct sequence.

More than ever, we think this was an experience where you really had to be there to get even close to understanding what the sensations were be like. The feeling of speed would be devastating, but it just doesn’t translate that well. But if you’ve got a spare 24 minutes then this latest Drive clip is a damn good way to spend it.

Once you’re done watching, check out Harris’ blog over at PistonHeads for a nice insight into some of the costs involved in a test like this.

Breathing new life into a French hot hatch icon

Peugeot 205 GTI

This is the coolest motoring story you will read all week. And probably all month and maybe even all year. The Peugeot 205 GTI took over from the Mk1/Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI as the hot hatch leader. Today they still look great and are no doubt a heap of fun to drive.

However, as our own experience in a 1980 Mk1 Golf GTI tells us, driving these little pocket rockets from two–three decades ago quickly reminds how far the motoring world has advanced insofar as performance, braking capabilities and general ride and handling are concerned.

But what if you cold bring some 21st century performance and refinement into an iconic hot hatch chassis? The power of modern day hot hatches, but with the more raw and rewarding driving thrills of their forerunners. Seriously, what’s not to like!

This is where UK-based Pug1off steps in. They’ll take your 205 GTI and will breath new life into its heart. Engine conversions, suspension upgrades, gearbox swaps, you name it, they’ll do pretty much whatever your budget allows.

One of their key packages is to ditch the old 1.9 litre engine in favour of a 2.0 litre from the 306 GTI Rallye. That’s good for 167hp at the wheels, they say, which in a sub 900kg hot hatch can only equal massive smiles.

More detail after the break.

Force India employees affected by bomb scare

Bahrain GP protests

Regular F1 correspondent for Reuters, Alan Baldwin, is in Bahrain for this weekend’s grand prix and he brings word of what its like on the ground in the troubled Gulf state.

Grabbing the headlines are two Force India employees who have asked to return home to Britain after being caught up in a petrol bomb scare. An official statement from Bahrain race organisers said: “[it was] an isolated incident involving a handful of illegal protesters acting violently towards police. During this incident a Molotov cocktail landed in the vicinity of their vehicle.”

Despite this circuit officials remain confident they can maintain track safety, saying they “can confirm that all the usual precautions are being taken around the track to ensure the level of security is maintained.”

Meanwhile a group of British politicians have written to F1’s major sponsors claiming their brands will be damaged due to their involvement in Bahrain.

James Allen has written of the uneasy sense of calm in Bahrain, stating: “The Grand Prix is moving up into gear. Everywhere there are banners proclaiming that Bahrain is ‘UniF1ied’, while the slogan ‘back on track’ is also evident. It’s quite surprising the extent to which the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone have allowed the government to use the F1 brand in its political messaging about the country moving forward.”

Audi RS Q3 concept photo gallery

Audi Q3 RS concept

A couple of days ago Audi gave us details of its RS Q3 concept which will make its public debut at Auto China 2012 in Beijing next week.

The RS Q3 features a TT RS Plus sourced 265kW turbocharged five cylinder and that alone makes it a pretty cool machine we reckon.

Here’s a bunch of photos to complement the original story. If you like ’em make sure to click each pic to load a 2000px version.

Targa Tasmania 2012: Day 2 update

Jason White, Lamborghini Gallardo, Targa Tasmania 2012

Wet weather greeted the field in Targa Tasmania on Day 2 of competition. Sadly, that meant a fair bit of bent metal, as you’ll see in the videos below.

Jason White continues to lead the Modern outright class in his Lambo. He enjoys a 48 second buffer to defending champ Tony Quinn in a Nissan GT-R. The big mover was Matt Close in the Audi TT RS,moving from sixth place into third, an even one minute behind White.

In the Classic outright competition things are a bit tighter, Rex Broadbent has his 1974 Porsche Carrera RS 14 seconds ahead of the awesome sounding 1970 Datsun 240Z driven by Jon Siddons. In third place, only 29 seconds behind the Porsche is Donn Todd in his 1971 Ford Capri Perana.

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R v Porsche 911 Turbo S

Nissan GT-R Black Edition v Porsche 911 Turbo S

You might think a video comparing a 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition with a 997 Porsche 911 Turbo S would be pretty entertaining. Especially when you consider the test involves some stunning mountain roads before a balls out drag race on an empty airfield.

Well, we’re not so sure. Take a look at Jonny Lieberman’s work from Motor Trend and let us know what you think.

Audi RS6 Avant spied stretching its legs

Audi RS6 prototype

The hi-po version of the Audi A6 Avant has been spotted testing on the Nürburgring. The third-gen RS6 should be good for around 540hp thanks to a new twin-turbo V8.

That’s actually down a bit on power compared to the astonishing Lamborghini-sourced V10 in the old RS6. When we drove that back in 2008 we said: “The power and the subsequent hit of adrenalin are insanely addictive in this car.”

We can only imagine Audi will be working hard to ensure none of that rush is lost in the new model, despite two less cylinders and a bit less power. Audi may continue to stick with a conventional torque-converter slushbox (8-speed) for the RS6 with concerns the 7-speed S tronic may not be able to handle the grunt expected.

It’s expected the RS6 will make an official appearance at the Paris Motor Show later in the year, before going on sale in 2013. It should pave the way for an RS7 Sportback sometime next year.

Targa Tasmania 2012: Day 1 update

Targa Tasmania 2012

Targa Tasmania began in earnest yesterday. As you can see Matt Rickards didn’t make the best of starts having a minor off in his Mazda RX8-SP in the early part of the day.

At the end of the day Jason White (Lamborghini Gallardo) held a 13 second lead in the Modern outright category over Tony Quinn (Nissan GT-R), while Brendan Reeves (Mazda RX8-SP) was 48 seconds behind in third.

Leading the Classic outright category was the seemingly unstoppable Rex Broadbent (1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS), a slender eight seconds ahead of Jon Siddons (1970 Datsun 240Z). Donn Todd (1971 Ford Capri Perana) was 23 seconds behind Broadbent.

Targa Tasmania 2012: Day 0 update

Targa Tasmania 2012 prologue

If you’ve not been paying attention you’ll have missed that Targa Tasmania started earlier in the week. We’ve not helped the cause by being a bit lax with our updates. To help make up there’s a selection of videos after the break showing the action from Day 0, otherwise known as Prologue day. It’s a pretty informal day of ‘competition’ where the results only count to the daily starting order for the rally proper.

Previous winner Jason White got off to a poor start when he blew an engine in his Lamborghini Gallardo on the media day. Thankfully he was able to put things right before the prologue. So much so that he posted the fastest time in the Modern outright category on the George Town stage.

Five-time Classic outright winner Rex Broadbent was back on form in his 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, too; quickest in George Town by 2.8 seconds from Jon Siddons in his 1970 Datson 240Z.

Dani Sordo confirmed as Ford stand-in

Dani Sordo

Dani Sordo will take temporary leave from his Prodrive MINI team to fill in for Ford at Rally Argentina later this month. Ford found themselves with an opening after Jari-Matti Latvala injured himself while cross-country skiing.

Prodrive won’t be racing in Argentina so in some ways it made sense to utlilise Sordo’s talents. Ford hasn’t been wasting any time, either, posting pics to Facebook overnight showing Sordo testing an M-Sport Fiesta RS WRC.

Dani Sordo is gracious to Prodrive for the opportunity and has proven form in the South American event. “When you are a rally driver all you want to do is to compete,” he said. “So I am really happy that Prodrive has given me the chance to drive the Ford. I was second the last time I competed in Argentina, but as I will be learning a new car, it will be difficult to repeat this.”

Ford World Rally Team boss, Malcolm Wilson, is also thankful for Prodrive’s assistance. “The agreement is for one rally only, and I would like to thank the management of Dani’s current team [Prodrive], who were extremely gracious in helping us in such challenging circumstances,” he explained.

Prodrive will be back in action for Rally NZ in June.

Ducaudi deal officially announced

Ducaudi, 18 April 2012

As expected, Audi announced overnight they had completed a takeover of premium motorcycle manufacturer Ducati. The buyout figure hasn’t been confirmed by Audi on record, but it’s believed the sum was around €860m (AU$1.08b).

In a company statement Audi Chairman, Rupert Stadler, said: “Ducati is known worldwide as a premium brand among motorcycle manufacturers and has a long tradition of building sporty motorcycles.

“It has great expertise in high-performance engines and lightweight construction, and is one of the world’s most profitable motorcycle manufacturers. That makes Ducati an excellent fit for Audi.”

Meanwhile, Reuters reports these comments from Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch-Gladbach: “I can’t think of a concrete reason for Audi to warrant a business case for buying Ducati. Ducati doesn’t enhance Audi’s business model in any way, it’s just a trophy in the wall cabinet.”

Audi’s official statement justifies the purchase: “The progressive control systems and special combustion chamber process of Ducati engines, their resulting sporty character, and Ducati’s extensive know-how in lightweight construction thus offer great potential for AUDI AG and the Volkswagen Group.”

Ducati becomes the twelfth trophy in the Volkswagen Group cabinet, joining other performance brands such as Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porsche.

The iconic Italian bike maker started life in 1926 making parts for radios, before producing its first motorcycle in 1949.

Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupé leaked

Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe

This time last year Mercedes gave us the sexy Concept A Class and now they’re at it again if these leaked images of the Concept Style Coupé are anything to go by.

These pics give us a preview of the CLC four-door saloon/coupé. Interestingly, the official reveal won’t take place at a major motor show, but instead at the Transmission LA: AV CLUB event, run by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

It’s expected the production version of the CLC will be offered for sale early in 2013. It’s based on the same platform as the A and B Class and will utilise a front-wheel drive layout, with all-wheel drive likely for higher-spec models.

We’ll update you with the official word from Mercedes once it is released.
