WTAC 2012: Australian teams up the ante

MCA Suspension Silva, World Time Attack Challenge 2012

Competition between Australia’s leading time attack teams is hotting up, with local squads completing crucial final track testing in the lead-up to Friday’s World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) in Sydney.

After starting as a grass roots motorsport activity five years ago, WTAC 2012 will see 93 teams compete at Sydney Motorsport Park, including entries from Japan, the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Event organiser Ian Baker said the intensity of development aimed at setting the fastest flying lap on semi-treaded street-legal tyres is “mind blowing”.

“World Time Attack has become an arms race to see who can build the lightest, most powerful and most aerodynamically effective car—and this year the Australian teams have really stepped up to try and meet the standard of the overseas squads,” he said.

One of the leading Australian competitors is expected to be the Hankook-supported MCA Suspension Silvia from Queensland, managed by Murray and Joshua Coote.

After finishing 10th in last year’s event the Silvia, driven by Superleague Formula driver Earl Bamber, has undergone a thorough upgrade.

Grand Prix of America releases new logo

Grand Prix of America logo

At the end of June, when Sebastian Vettel appeared at the Grand Prix of America course in New Jersey, those paying attention may have noticed the Grand Prix of America logo. But if you missed never mind, because here it is.

In an official statement announcing the new logo organisers said: “After reviewing dozens of renderings, the Grand Prix of America group chose a blue-and-red logo that features a stylized Statue of Liberty crown over a checkered-flag helmet, anchored by a single star.”

More importantly, perhaps, the statement confidently declared: “The Formula One race will take place on the shores of the Hudson River in New Jersey in June, 2013.”

This follows earlier suggestions the race could be delayed until 2014.

VIDEO: Audi R8 e-tron Nürburgring lap record

Audi R8 etron

Audi has released onboard video of the R8 e-tron setting its Nürburgring lap record for an electric powered production car. Markus Winkelhock was at the wheel and he managed to pedal the eerily quiet R8 around the Ring in 8 minutes 9.09 seconds.

While the lap time is impressive enough you can see from the grab above that Winkelhock had a bit of a brown trouser moment early in the lap. We’re not sure if it’s the lack of engine sound, but the view inside the cabin, coupled with the squealing tyres, leads us to believe the e-tron suffers from more than enough understeer.

Watch the lap in full after the break and judge for yourself.

WTAC 2012: Finding Project Nemo

Project Nemo, World Time Attack Challenge 2012

A wild-looking time attack car that produces more aerodynamic downforce than a Le Mans prototype will be the centre of attention when it makes its debut at the World Time Attack Challenge at Sydney Motorsport Park on Friday.

The Queensland-built Project Nemo is the result of a two-year program to develop the ultimate time attack car by using what its owners describe as an integrated approach.

“Other teams you’ll see at World Time Attack started out with a road car and added different bits along the way,” said driver and team manager Chris Eaton.

“From the beginning, our car has been a definite effort to integrate the aero with the suspension and driveline. Our goal has been to produce something with the best ability in every area.”

Based on a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII, Project Nemo’s extraordinary carbon fibre bodywork was designed by American aerodynamicist and data engineer Andrew Brilliant.

His Japan-based company AMB Aero has applied experience gained in the Indycar, American Le Mans and Japan Super GT Championships, and American Time Attack, to create a shape that will generate the highest-possible downforce through Eastern Creek’s sweeping turns.

Mandatory Autonomous Emergency Braking coming soon

Euro NCAP pushing for compulsory AEB systems

A decision by Euro NCAP to include Autonomous Engine Braking (AEB) in its testing from 2014 onwards has forced the European Commission to make the technology mandatory for commercial vehicles by November next year. You’d expect a similar regime to apply to passenger cars shortly thereafter.

Euro NCAP describes AEB as such:

Autonomous Emergency Braking systems can help to avoid crashes or to mitigate their severity by warning the driver and supporting his braking response and/or by applying the brakes independently. The technology generally uses forward-looking radar, lidar and video systems to provide a complete, accurate, real-time image of the road ahead.

As well as the obvious reduction to injuries and road deaths—a study shows mandatory AEB can cut accidents by as much as 27%—Philippe Jean from the European Commission says the economic benefits should also be recognised.

“Our studies indicate that the resulting reduction in congestion due to accidents would represent an economic value of about €100 million (£78.5m) in Germany alone,” Jean explained.

The decision by Euro NCAP to include AEB testing means it will soon be impossible for a car to achieve a coveted five-star safety rating without the system being fitted.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP hopes their decision will help motivate decision makers into action.

“A faster penetration of these technologies into new cars will make it more realistic for the European Union to reach its target to cut road deaths by 50% by 2020,” van Ratingen said.

“Consequently, Euro NCAP has decided to include AEB assessments as part of the overall star rating from 2014 onwards and hopes that European authorities will soon require AEB as mandatory on all new vehicle types.”

Earlier this year Euro NCAP conducted a fitment survey to learn more about current models fitted with AEB systems. The results are available here.

Ever wanted to stick a V12 in a BMW Z3?

BMW Z3 V12

BMW M has used Facebook to give the world these photos of a one-off V12 powered Z3. Believed to be the 5.4 litre engine from the mid-1990s, as used in the 750i and 850Ci, it’s said the bulk of 320hp unit resulted in a weight distribution of 70:30. That may have something to do with why the car didn’t go any further than what you see here.

We’d love to get a personal tour of the secret M garage one day and, although we quite like the thought of a big V12 in the relatively little Z3, we still think the M3 ute is cooler.

Audi teases RS5 Pikes Peak surprise

Audi RS5 Pikes Peak teaser

Audi USA excited motorsport fans when it posted the above image to its Facebook page with this accompanying note:

The 90th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb kicks off in just one week and to pay homage to our record-breaking past here, we’ve got a surprise in store for you.

The 2012 running of the Pikes Peak event, originally scheduled for 8 July, was postponed due to the Colorado Springs wildfires. The rescheduled event will take place on Sunday 12 August. We hope the special RS5 Audi has in store does 90th running of the event justice.

Of course, with its all conquering Quattro S1 rally car, Audi won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb three years running (1984–1986) and they’ve given us a little reminder of their efforts with a short video after the break.

More pics of the London 2012 Mini MINI

Mini MINI at the London 2012 Olympic Games

We reckon the Mini MINI, starring at the London 2012 Olympic stadium, is pretty damn cool. So we thought we’d share a few more pics with you, and two short videos as well. We also asked MINI UK if there were any plans to make replicas of the Mini MINI for sale. Sadly, the reply was negative.

But we’d still like to know, if a remote controlled Mini MINI replica was for sale, would you buy one?

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Rally Finland

Citroen DS3 WRC, 2012 Rally Finland

Another WRC event, another one-two result for Citroën. This time it was Rally Finland and for the fourth race in succession we saw Sebastien Loeb finish first, with teammate Mikko Hirvonen close behind in second place.

After the rally Loeb said he was very happy to secure his third Rally Finland trophy. “I am really pleased to have clinched this third win here against a competitor as tenacious as Mikko,” said Sébastien Loeb. “It’s especially pleasing to have led the rally from start to finish. We pushed a lot, sometimes driving close to the limit. To drive like that, you need to have a car which you have total faith. The upgrades made this weekend to the DS3 WRC, especially on the shock absorbers, enabled us to move up another notch in terms of performance and how easy the car was to drive.”

Loeb, now on 171 points, extends his lead in the drivers’ championship to 43 points over Hirvonen (128). Petter Solberg (104) is third, a further 24 points behind. Unsurprisingly, Citroën is miles ahead in the constructors’ title—109 points ahead of Ford—and can probably start celebrating another win.

Citroën Australia provides the Rally Finland recap for you after the break, and includes updates on Australians Chris Atkinson, driving for the Qatar World Rally Team, and Molly Taylor, United Business/BP Rally Team. Both showed moments of promise before succumbing to accident and mechanical damage respectively.

Next up on the WRC calendar is Rallye Deutschland (24–26 August).

VIDEO: A closer look at the MINI JCW GP2

2012 MINI John Cooper Works GP

Anders Warming, MINI’s design boss, talks us through some of the finer aspects of the upcoming JCW GP2. Sadly, for us, it’s all about the cosmetic stuff. We still don’t have the final specification of the engine to be used in this car. And not even the smallest clue was given by Warming.

But, if you’re a fan of the GP2, then we think you’ll still appreciate another look at the “fastest MINI ever made.”

VIDEO: A closer look at the BMW M135i

BMW M135i

In this short video BMW presents the key aspects of the M135i. Powered by a turbocharged 3.0 litre six cylinder engine the M135i will be hitting Australian shores in a few months.

The hot tip is the M2 will use a four cylinder engine, so for all we know the M135i could be in for a short lifespan, which will add to its provenance and may help overcome its face only a BMW designer’s mother could love.
