MY13 Audi RS5 – Australian prices and specs

2013 Audi RS5 Coupe

Audi Australia has just released official info on the facelifted RS5 Coupé. The biggest news is the drop in price of around $14,000 compared to the model’s original launch back in late 2010. That means Australian RS5 pricing now starts at $161,400.

Mechanically speaking the RS5 is much the same as it was before and still packs a 331kW punch, thanks to its free-revving 4.2 litre V8. However, changes to the car’s electromechanical power steering are said to benefit driving feel and fuel economy.

Modest gains of 0.1 second and 0.3l/100km have been made to the 0–100km/h time and fuel economy respectively, resulting in key figures of 4.5 seconds and 10.5l/100km.

Visually the refreshed RS5 gets the makeover treatment first seen on the A4 facelift, which includes the new-look LED daytime running lights.

Finally, you can now get a flat-bottomed steering wheel on the RS5. Indeed, the new steering wheel headlines the revised standard equipment, along with 20″ rotor-style alloys.

Sadly, we’re just not as keen on the RS5 as we used to be. It’s got a peach of an engine, and while we’ve not had a chance to test one for ourselves just yet, we reckon the TT RS would provide just as much drama and driving enjoyment, in fact possibly more. Leaving you with enough change to pocket a Polo GTI for daily duites.

Perhaps, more pertinently, if you wanted a well sorted coupé—and with Audi asking the best part of $180K—wouldn’t you be duty bound to visit your nearest Porsche Centre?

VIDEO: Keep calm and carry on

Mitsubishi Evo rally god

After seeing the demise of one race-prepped Mistubishi Evo today it’s nice to bring you a story with a happy ending. Although, as you’ll see, the difference between happy and sad was ever so close.

Clearly, we’re big Formula 1 fans here at AUSmotive, but we did chuckle when we read the following comment from this video’s YouTube comments section: “Lifting off is for F1 drivers!”

VIDEO: Spectacular crash at Pikes Peak

Jeremy Foley crashes out of 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Holy shit! That’s about all you can say after watching this monumental crash at the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. At the wheel was Jeremy Foley, with co-driver Yuri Kouznetsov.

Despite virtually every panel of their 560whp Mistubushi Evo VIII being destroyed we can report, thankfully, both men are okay. Foley confirmed this himself when he posted the following message to his Facebook page: “I thought I posted already, but Yuri and I are OK. A little beaten up but nothing major. Thank you so much to everyone for the kindness and support! What a wonderful feeling to feel so loved!”

Oh yeah, that’ll buff right out.

Volkswagen Polo GTI repeats BFYB victory

Volkswagen Polo GTI

The feisty little Volkswagen Polo GTI has gone back-to-back and defended its Bang For Your Bucks award, as judged by Motor Magazine.

The Pogo had to beat 17 other competitors to win the award and Motor claims the 132kW high-demand hot hatch has the essentials required to deserve its praise: “What the Polo GTI aces without question are the fundamentals of not just every great hot hatch but every great car.”

WTAC 2012: Warren Luff talks Project Nemo

Warren Luff, Project Nemo, WTAC 2012

In this video Warren Luff talks about his winning 1:25.02 lap record from last weekend’s World Time Attack. Also interviewed is Chris Eaton, owner and builder of the Project Nemo Evo VII.

Eaton reveals the inspiration for finding Nemo was the hope that his son could one day drive his dad’s car in the Gran Turismo Playstation game. Luff also lets in on the corner speed through Sydney Motor Sport Park’s Turn 1; let’s just say it’s pretty damn quick!

We’re still yet to see onboard footage of the winning lap, which is a very tidy 3.8 seconds faster than the 2011 WTAC winner. We’re guessing that’s being saved for the YouTube channel of the event’s sponsor and will update you when it comes to hand.

Well this is a little embarrassing

Williams F1 driver Pastor Maldonado recently made an ass of himself in Caracas. He was supposed to perform 12 laps of the Fuerte Tiunas military parade ground in front of an estimated crowd of 20,000. Instead, he made a rookie error and lost grip on the slippery road surface and crashed his FW33, ensuring the hero’s homecoming ended up becoming a major embarrassment.

Maldonado now joins the Nick Heidfeld hall of shame. But unlike Heidfeld, at least Maldonado has a grand prix winner’s trophy to fall back on.

Red Bull to give WRC some much needed wings

Sebastien Loeb, 2012 Rally New Zealand

Reports from Europe say Red Bull Media House has been awarded the contract to take on the role of official promoter for the World Rally Championship. It’s been reported the FIA selected Red Bull ahead of bids from Eurosport and a South African consortium.

After the collapse of former promoter North One Sport and the withdrawal of Nokia’s sponsorship the WRC has been in search of some good news.

It was previously hoped the FIA would announce the new promoter in mid-June, but WRC stakeholders were told about the new deal at Rally Finland.

Yves Matton from Citroën World Rally Team says the deal will be separate from his team’s sponsorship.

“I think [Red Bull] Media House promoting the championship would be a good thing, but it would be different from Red Bull, which is the team sponsor,” said Matton.

“When they do something, they do it properly and they don’t just want to make a good name with the promotion. If they choose to invest in the World Rally Championship then it’s because they want to make a proper job, otherwise they would not even attempt to do it.”

Alfa Romeo and Mazda twins rendered

2015 Alfa Romeo Spider and Mazda MX-5 rendered

Back in May Fiat and Mazda announced they would co-develop a new roadster platform for the Alfa Romeo and Mazda brands. We know one of those cars will be the rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5 and we assume the other will be badged the Alfa Romeo Spider.

UK magazine Car has had a crack at rendering the two models. So, which one do you prefer? Right now, we reckon the Mazda has its nose in front.

While the original agreement states the assumption, “both vehicles will be manufactured at Mazda’s Hiroshima, Japan, plant with production for Alfa Romeo envisaged starting in 2015”, it is expected each company will supply their own unique engines.

Either way it looks like happy days ahead for lightweight roadster fans.

Porsche Pajun to rely only on V6 engines?

Porsche Pajun sketch

More detail on the new four-door Porsche Pajun has come to light, courtesy of Car magazine. Key to the latest info is word the Pajun will rely solely on V6 engines, in both petrol and diesel configurations. A V6, and only a V6? We’re not quite sure that’ll turn out to be accurate, but who are we to argue.

It’s expected the Pajun will be built on the MSB (modular sports car matrix) platform that can handle front, mid and rear-engined layouts, as well as rear and all-wheel drive. The second-generation Panamera will employ the same architecture and is due in September 2015. Best predictions say the Pajun will debut 12 to 24 months later.

While the Pajun will be around the same size as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E Class, expect Porsche to target the A7 Sportback, 6 Series Gran Coupé and CLS models of their German counterparts.

As a result the Pajun will most likely debut as a four-door model with the motoring world’s latest must-have model layout, a shooting brake, to follow a year or so later.

‘Rush’ scheduled for September 2013 premiere

Rush movie website title graphic

An official premiere date of 20 September 2013 has been announced for Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush by Universal Pictures. A new website for the “big screen re-creation” has also been launched and outlines the big budget F1 flick like this:

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Four preview images have been included on the website and can be seen below, or check out the official site for larger versions.

We’re guessing the Australian release of Rush will take place after the 20 September 2013 world premiere. As soon as we learn more we’ll be sure to pass it on.

WTAC 2012: Australian teams go 1-2-3

World Time Attack Challenge 2012

Australian teams have reclaimed the podium at World Time Attack (WTAC) from the US and Japanese teams, taking 1-2-3 in both Pro and Open classes.

Strong winds throughout the event made things difficult for drivers, but did not hold back spectator numbers or prevent amazing times from being achieved on the track.

Warren Luff drove the Queensland-based Nemo Racing Mitsubishi Evolution VII to the number one spot in the Pro class, with his best lap time of 1.25.0200 on the Saturday creating Australian motorsport history.

Luff’s lap time undercuts the fastest ever V8 Supercar lap of Sydney Motorsport Park by over four seconds. It is the fastest ever WTAC lap, possibly the fastest lap in a tin-top car, and it was done on road-registrable Hankook Ventus TD tyres.

Nemo Racing manager Chris Eaton looked relaxed on the Friday after Luff pulled a time of 1.25.7400. After this, his team could have packed up and gone home and still won the event outright.
