Volkswagen Golf GTI concept en route to Paris

VW Golf VII GTI spied at the Nurburgring

Autocar brings word we should expect the next-generation GTI, or at least a near production-ready concept, at the Paris Motor Show next month. The info was tucked away at the end of their article on the new Golf VII:

“At the Paris motor show on 27 September, Volkswagen plans to preview the new Golf GTI. It receives a new 222bhp version of the Audi developed EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine.”

You’ll note today’s guess on power is 222bhp, or around 165kW. That figure has been around since speculation on the Golf VII GTI began. However, we’ve also had suggestions as high as 195kW, which remain dubious about.

Looks like we won’t have to wait long to find out.

A different kind of Batmobile

Batman themed Pagani Zonda

If you owned a Pagani Zonda F, would you pay someone to paint Batman on the bonnet for you? Probably not, is our guess. But now that you’ve seen it (there’s also a video below), what do you think?

Let’s face it, if you’re cruising the streets in a Zonda you’re going to stand out from the crowd, so why not go the extra mile. After all it’s only a bit of paint.

The owner is a bloke by the name of Jorge Gomez from Argentina and it turns out it’s not the first time he’s indulged in a bit of bonnet art, with a couple of Porsche 911s also coming in for some attention.

We reckon Gomez should do it properly and get himself a Sandman.

Kid rock

BMW M3 crashed by Arizona kid

“Aaaaaaaargh! Oh my God!”

Some more schadenfreude for you today with this video of a 19-year-old punting an E46 M3 into the rocks near Phoenix, Arizona. Sure, at that age, we’ve probably all been guilty of doing stupid stuff on the roads that we’re not proud of. But owning up to it and sharing the video with the world?!

Fair play to the kid, though, who has had this quote attributed to him via YouTube: “Well it happened at South Mountain park in Phoenix AZ. One of my buddies and I were out just having fun and driving until I came up on a deceptive corner, misjudged it and it happened. No injuries. The car was a total loss. Misjudgment of the road caused the accident.”

Ferrari 458 Italia lights my fire, yet again!

Ferrari 458 Italia bruns to a crisp

It’s been a while since we last featured a flaming Ferrari 458 Italia on AUSmotive and this one is a right sizzler. So bad was the 458 BBQ phenomenon back in 2010 that Ferrari issued an official recall to supposedly prevent the problem.

Thankfully, this poor chap, who was traveling on the A5 motorway in Switzerland, managed to escape his inferno with no injury. It’s a frightening sight and while we can share a little laugh from 16,000km away, we expect our tears would be enough to extinguish the flames if the 458 in question was our own.

Golf VII sized up ahead of world premiere

Volkswagen Golf VII rendering

New and supposedly official details of the new Volkswagen Golf VII have emerged ahead of its world premiere in Berlin on 4 September.

The Mk7 Golf will be the first VW to use the company’s new MQB platform and along with improvements in ride and handling quality it will also give us the largest ever Golf. The new car will be 56mm longer and 18mm wider than the Mk6, but will be 28mm lower. Overall dimensions are 4255mm (length), 1799mm (width) and 1452mm (height).

Slight adjustments have also been made to the car’s track, with an extra 8mm in width for the front wheels and 6mm at the rear.

The increase in size allows rear seat passengers an extra 15mm of legroom, while all passengers will gain extra shoulder room of around 30mm. Elbow room is also improved by an average of 21mm for front and rear passengers.

There’s an extra 30 litres of boot space, with the opening now 1023mm, an increase of 47mm. Internally, the boot now measures 1272mm, up by an impressive 228mm.

Weight reduction is all the rage these days and the new Golf is no different. A variety of measures have been introduced to shed as much as 100kg from the previous generation.

For example, around 7kg has been saved through new seat design, 23kg has been lost from the body-in-white and 3kg has been shed from the wiring loom. An increased use of aluminium suspension components has allowed the Golf VII to drop another 26kg compared to the Golf VI. The new EA211 1.4 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine is 23kg lighter than the EA111 unit it replaces.

Indeed, according to the source article from Autocar, the lightest Golf VII will be just 1050kg.

Of course, we’ll bring you comprehensive coverage of the Golf VII as soon as Volkswagen releases pictures and specifications.

A look inside the MINI JCW GP2

MINI John Cooper Works GP

MINI has given us a brief look inside its new JCW GP2 model. We’ve not got much to go on with this pic, but we can see some tasty Recaro seats, complete with bespoke model specific embossing. There’s also some go faster red seatbelts and, if you look hard enough, you can see the absence of a rear seat as well.

Like we said, there’s not a lot to go on, but as MINI drip feeds more info we’ll keep you up to date.

David Coulthard lights up New York

Red Bull Racing visits New York City

David Coulthard and his Red Bull Racing colleagues recently stopped by New York for a little holiday. While there they managed to dust off a couple of 2011 title-winning RB7 showcars for a quick spin.

We have 11 images sourced from Red Bull along with a couple of teaser videos. A longer clip will be coming our way via the Red Bull Media House very soon.

In the meantime Leo Parente from Drive has done a fine job of giving us the skinny about Red Bull’s visit to NYC and New Jersey to promote the 2013 Grand Prix of America, or should that be 2014?

Australia’s BMW 1M allocation tops 300

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

When it was first announced the BMW 1 Series M Coupé was coming to Australia we were told “around 100” would be shipped down under. After quickly selling out the initial batch, BMW Australia soon confirmed the rumours it had secured an extra 100 vehicles, bringing Australia’s offical allocation of 1Ms to 200.

Now, over 12 months since the first 1M’s arrived in Australia, brand new models are still being delivered. Thanks to an unofficial tally provided by internet sleuths at the 1addicts forum, the latest shipment of cars unloaded this week brings the local 1M tally to 301, and counting.

For interest’s sake the current breakdown of 1M deliveries across Australia’s four shipping docks according to 1addicts is as follows:

  • Brisbane (QLD) 57
  • Fremantle (WA) 22
  • Melbourne (Vic) 110
  • Port Kembla (NSW) 112

Great news for BMW fans all around the country. Better news for buyers keen to pick up a well cared for 1M second hand!

VIDEO: Developing the MINI JCW GP2

MINI John Cooper Works GP prototype

MINI has given us an official behind the scenes look at developing the JCW GP2. Joerg Weidinger from MINI explains his role in tuning the GP2 using the Nürburgring and surrounding roads to ensure the car has a comfortable ride, including for those who won’t use the track.

We think we have a scoop for potential GP2 buyers who don’t intend to track the car: The ride will not be comfortable!

With the frequency of GP2 updates increasing (there’s another video available on Facebook too) we’re now expecting to see the car on the stands at the Paris Motor Show, although that’s not been confirmed.

Internet warz: Ken Block v Gymkhana.com

Ken Block versus Gymkhana.com

Ken Block is waging a legal battle against the owners of the website gymkhana.com. That’s Josh and Matt Martelli, or Mad Media, and they also just happen to be the guys who directed and produced the first three of his Gymkhana videos.

Block first became aware of gymkhana.com website around the time Gymkhana Four was released and dismissed it as little more than a bit of a spat from Mad Media after they were no longer involved with Block Gymkhana videos (the reasons for that split are unclear). That all changed, though, when a colleague of Block’s was approached by Mad Media to advertise on gymkhana.com and he asked Block if he had anything to do with the site.

Up until this point Block’s colleague had assumed that gymkhana.com was officially associated with Block and/or DC Shoes (really, despite the lack of branding?). Anyway, this is what has prompted Block to sue the Martellis.

In an interview with Jalopnik Block explains his side of the story:

“With regard to the domain name, my experience has been that partners on projects who have been brought on in a work for hire situation like Mad Media was on these projects will sometimes acquire URL’s to help protect the people they are working for and then assign them to the brand owner.

“A colleague of mine that works at a car manufacturer hit me up, asking if I had anything to do with the website… He had no clue that neither myself, nor DC Shoes, were affiliated with Gymkhana.com, and that gave us major cause for alarm.

“After we and DC Shoes had worked so hard to build the Gymkhana brand, we were really upset to learn that Mad Media is wrongfully using the value in our brand and the mark Gymkhana to drive traffic to what’s nothing more than a very general motorsport blog so Mad Media can profit off our goodwill. It’s a classic bait and switch technique since the content on the site is not in any way catered to anything associated with me, DC Shoes, or the Gymkhana brand or our video series.

“What also upsets me about this, is that if Mad Media had approached me like a reputable media company with a well thought out and developed business plan for Gymkhana.com that made actual sense for helping to grow the Gymkhana brand, I would have been open to working with them on it. Instead though, they went completely behind my back and blindsided me.

“You know, after working together for five years, we’d all become pretty friendly. I’ve actually known Matt Martelli since I was in college [over 20 years ago]. Unfortunately, when I reached out to Josh Martelli about the site and the URL, he essentially told me to go fuck myself, which came as a huge shock to me!”

It’s all fun and games until someone registers a domain name, or something like that. A response from Matt Martelli has been published by Jalopnik and if you’re still reading this piece, we recommend you go check it out.

Newey expects engines to dominate from 2014

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s design guru, reckons getting the best V6 turbo engine will be the key to success when the new regulations take force in 2014. Speaking to Autosport, Newey said the restrictions on aerodynamics are so tight that it could end up being a race for the best engine supplier.

“The chassis regs, aero wise, are a more restrictive version of what we have already,” Newey explained.

“The installation of the engine is obviously something that the teams will work on with their engine manufacturers. It remains to be seen whether someone comes up with something novel there and steals an advantage.

“That means the engine power unit itself, which is not only the internal combustion engine but also the various recovery systems bolted to it.

“It is possible that one manufacturer will do significantly better than the others, at which point you might end up with that manufacturer’s cars at the front of the grid.”

So, it’s not a lot different to last year or two, really, when Red Bull, thanks to Newey, had the best aero package allowing them to dominate the constructors’ championship and Sebastian Vettel to pick up a couple of drivers’ titles.

Renault are no mugs and Newey will be hoping they’re quick out of the blocks in 2014. Assuming Red Bull sticks with the French engine supplier, of course.
