2013 Audi A3 Sportback revealed

2013 Audi A3 Sportback

Ahead of its debut in Paris next week Audi has released pictures and information for its new A3 Sportback, codenamed 8V. Based on the three-door A3, first seen at Geneva in March, the Sportback has made good use of its MQB platform and rides on a wheelbase which has been extended by 35mm. Overall the wheelbase is 58mm longer than the previous 8P Sportback.

As is often the way with teutonic styling the look of the new Sportback is very much a case of evolution from the model it replaces. Generally speaking we really like the way the new A3 looks and nothing has changed with the addition of the Sportback to the range. The few nips and tucks applied by Audi’s designers have resulted in a small, but noticeable progression, that is more modern and should help keep the A3 at the top of the entry-level prestige market.

Audi has managed to reduce weight across the Sportback range by as much as 90kg compared to the old model. In real terms, a Sportback with 1.4 TFSI tips the scales at 1205kg.

The A3 Sportback is presented here in S-Line trim and when you get inside the addition of a thick steering wheel with perforated leather should be a nice improvement from the previous gen. We’re not entirely sure the cross stitching on the seats is the world’s best decision, but reckon we’ll need to see it in person before making a final judgement.

With the rear seats up the Sportback offers 380 litres of luggage space, which expands to 1220 litres when the seats have been folded down.

As well as the improved interior space offered by the MQB architecture, handling should be enhanced now that the front axle has been pushed forward by 40mm. All engines are mounted in the usual front-wheel drive transverse fashion, but have been tilted backwards by 12° with the exhaust facing the bulkhead. A better balanced chassis being the aim here.

Of course, much of the rest of the Sportback is sourced from the A3 hatchback and you can read more detail on the Sportback in Audi’s press release below. We’ll also be back to add more pictures.

The A3 Sportback will hit European dealerships in February next year and we expect the Australian launch won’t be too far behind.

UPDATE: Additional text from Audi Australia has been added at the end of the press release. Mid-2013 is the word for the first local deliveries.

UPDATE 21 Sep: A new video and 39 extra pics have been added below.

Official Porsche 918 announcement imminent?

Porsche 918 Spyder

Following the appearance of a leaked brochure and numerous videos of the Porsche 918 hitting YouTube, most showing the car being photographed on and around the Nürburgring, we reckon the official word on the super Spyder is not far away.

We’ve put a few video clips together for you so you can see more of the 918 and hear its 3.4 litre V8, which provides 570hp from the hybrid’s 770hp total. Of course, you can’t really hear too many sounds when the Spyder potters around Nürburg in electric mode.

Porsche 918 Spyder brochure leaked

Porsche 918 Spyder brochure

Just a day after the Porsche 918 Spyder was previewed at a private event at the Nürburgring new images have emerged, believed to be from the 770hp hybrid’s official brochure.

Above you can see the 918’s stunning Martini livery explained. There’s also a pretty slick looking Salzburg Racing Design if you don’t like driving around in a free advertisement.

But if you really want to show off to your mates then we suggest you choose to have your 918 painted in either the Liquid Metal Grey or Liquid Metal Blue finish. Even if they think the colour sucks, they’ll surely be impressed by the €50,000 price tag!

Serious punters will tick the Weissach Package, which includes a six-point racing harness, alcantara and carbon fibre interior trim, lightweight brakes and front/rear dive planes. A 35kg weight saving is also achieved thanks to the removal of the air conditioning system, audio system and a few other interior bits and pieces. Actually, maybe the posers will still tick the Weissach box too.

Oh, as an added bonus, after you’ve checked out the extra pics after the break, there’s a nice spy video of the 918 shot on the roads surrounding the Nürburgring.

Erebus & SBR to lead Mercedes V8SC assault

Bettey Klimenko, Erebus Racing and Ross Stone, SBR

The worst kept secret in V8 Supercars was confirmed yesterday when Erebus Motorsport and Stone Brothers Racing announced they would form a new team to tackle the 2013 season. The partnership paves the way for the introduction of the Mercedes brand to the V8SC category under new Con of the future rules.

The Erebus–SBR alliance will see three cars entered in the 2013 V8SC season, with the E Class body to be used as the base.

Erebus has created a name for itself in the Australian GT Championship running a superb looking Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. They were also prominent at the Bathurst 12 Hour race early this year, in another partnership formed with slick German outfit Black Falcon.

It’s important to note that it is Erebus writing the cheques on behalf of Mercedes; this is not a factory-funded entry into Australia’s most popular motorsport category. Mercedes, through their AMG arm, will of course offer support to Erebus and Stone Brothers, who are ending their 15 year association with Ford.

Erebus Motorsport CEO, Ryan Maddison, spoke at yesterday’s press conference and said: “Our entry into V8 Supercars is an entirely Erebus Motorsport funded initiative as a private race team that is accessing the Customer Sports program of AMG.

“There is a lot of work required between now and the first event next year; by no means will it be an easy road with V8 Supercars being such a highly competitive environment.”

Here at AUSmotive we’ve previously expressed distaste at the COTF direction, despite this, we wish Erebus and SBR all the best and would love nothing more than seeing them upset the Ford–Holden duopoly.

Volkswagen commences Boxster production

Porsche Boxster S 981

An overflowing order book has forced Porsche to start production of the new Boxster at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück plant. The facility is the former Karmann site, which Volkswagen took over after the famous coach builder succumbed to insurmountable financial troubles in 2009.

Karmann itself had a history of building Porsches at Osnabrück, including the 356 in the 1960s and the 968 in the 1990s. The new agreement between Porsche and Volkswagen is one of the first tangible signs of cooperation since Volkswagen’s takeover of Porsche became official.

The first model to roll off the line under Volkswagen’s watch was this red Boxster S, heading to an owner in Lower Bavaria.

Speaking at the official launch of Boxster production Volkswagen Chairman, Prof. Dr Winterkorn, said: “The Boxster production in Osnabrück is a clear sign of the rapid coalescence of Volkswagen and Porsche. Production in Osnabrück means creating synergies that will benefit customers, staff and location alike.”

Porsche 918 Spyder

First pictures of the McLaren P1 hypercar

McLaren P1

This is the McLaren P1 and it’s here to make a statement! “The McLaren P1 has one simple goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track,” reads the press statement below.

In one fell swoop McLaren has quickly put to rest any criticism that its designers played it too safe with the MP4-12C. It’s now clear that was just the entrée. The main course is the P1 and its KERS-enhanced drivetrain, ranging anywhere from 800–960hp, depending on who you listen to.

Previously referred to as the MP4-P12 or 24C, the boldly named P1 is McLaren’s 21st century sequel to the all-conquering F1 road car. At this stage we’ve only got these three studio photos to go on; there’s not even a hint as to the car’s official performance specs. We’ll have to wait for the P1’s unveiling on 27 September.

So far, though, we like what we see! And we have sat back and taken notice of these ambitious words from Ron Dennis: “The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage. Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.”

Volkswagen up! – Australian pricing & specs

Volkswagen up

Volkswagen’s micro city car and current World Car of the Year, the rather painfully named up!, has hit Australian shores. It’s available in three and five door layouts and pricing starts at a very cheerful $13,990. A reasonably short options list ensures the up! remains a value buy for those on a strict budget.

The Slovakian built model is just 3.54m long and 1.64m wide; sure to fit in most confined spaces. It seats four passengers and with its frugal 1.0 litre three cylinder petrol engine should sip fuel at the miserly rate of 4.9l/100km. Yet, with only 55kW/95Nm on tap from that monster donk, and a 0–100km time of 13.2 seconds, don’t start thinking the up! is going to do much more than look cute when you mash the pedal to the metal. For now, Australian buyers have to make do with a 5-speed manual transmission.

While it’s cheap and not very powerful Volkswagen hasn’t shied away from adding some decent tech to the car. Notably the up! features City Emergency Braking, which automatically operates between 5–30km/h and scans the road for hazards up to 10m ahead. If you’re not paying attention the up! will do the braking for you.

For a small fee of $500 you can get the 5″ Maps + more portable infotainment device. It looks like a no-brainer to us and as well as navigation it also brings a trip computer, hands-free phone access and more.

The up! might be small, but it’s done enough to earn a maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. It’s not the best in class, but ranks quite highly in the Supermini class.

We’re very keen to see how the Australian market accepts the up!—will it sell well or will people think it’s just that little bit too small? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Jari-Matti Latvala wins 2012 Wales Rally GB

Jari-Matti Latvala, Ford Fiesta RS WRC

Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala defended his 2011 victory by going back-to-back at the Wales Rally GB on the weekend. In doing so, he finally ended the sequence of five consecutive wins by Sebastien Loeb. Latvala set up his victory on the opening day, guiding his Fiesta RS WRC to a healthy lead of more than 20 seconds.

Over the next two days of competition Latvala’s lead remained above that 20 second barrier. However, the final day saw an epic fight between fellow Ford driver Petter Solberg and the irrepressible Sebastien Loeb.

In the end, Loeb just edged out Solberg by a slender 0.9 second margin to ensure the damage done to his title lead was minimal.

Australia’s Chris Atkinson just missed out on the final championship point offered for 10th place after he broke a left-rear toe-link on his MINI JCW WRC.

Loeb continues to lead the championship by an impossible 61 points over his Citroën teammate Mikko Hirvonen, while a tight battle is on for third place. Petter Solberg, Mads Ostberg and Jari-Matti Latvala are separated by just six points with three rallies to go. In the constructors’ title race not even daylight is close to Citroën. And Ford is behind daylight.

The WRC teams hit the French tarmac for Rally de France early next month.

Until then you can enjoy Ford’s great highlights package from the Welsh roads after the break.
