GFC says, ‘No Volkswagen BlueSport for you!’

Volkswagen Concept BlueSport

The Global Financial Crisis has seen Volkswagen temporarily shelve plans to put the svelte Concept BlueSport into production.

A report on GoAuto quotes a hesitant Christian Haacke, Volkswagen product communications manager, “It is a niche product and especially in crisis times like this it will be a challenge to come up with a volume we could require to earn money with it.”

However, there are signs of encouragement from Haacke, “The idea of a small two-seater sportscar has been around for a really long time and I hope that the Concept BlueSport will finally make it through the calculators.”

Indeed, Christian, let’s hope it does. The thought of a nimble mid-engined MX-5 rival from Volkswagen is sure to whet many an appetite. Sure, the 132kW diesel variant might not tickle everyone’s fancy, but you can be sure if this car does get made, the full complement of suitable drivetrains will be considered.

The possibility of the Volkswagen group’s silky smooth 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder in such a shell is a thought to treasure. Sadly, a thought is all it will be for now.

Porsche-Volkswagen merger talks stall

Porsche & Volkswagen logosThe supposedly happy merger talks between Porsche and Volkswagen have stalled before even making first gear.

An unnamed Volkswagen spokesperson has been quoted as saying, “we recognised at the end of the week that Porsche is lacking several fundamental conditions for the discussions.”

The saga is travelling on a seemingly neverending path of intrigue and the balance of power appears to see-saw by the day. About the only thing that does seem clear is that Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn looks set to be the big winner in the executive stakes. Well, for now.

Stay tuned for more news as it comes to hand.

Scirocco R20T hits the road

Volkswagen Scirocco R20T

Volkswagen are playing sneaky by testing the Scirocco R20T at the Nürburgring so close to the upcoming 24 hour race (21-24 May). They want us to think this car is part of the race program. However, with the power of the internet on our side we won’t be fooled by this quasi racecar look. The lack of roll cage and tweaked body kit indicate that this is likely to be a test mule for the über road going Scirocco.

Other giveaways include the larger rear hatch spoiler, tweaked lower rear bumper, featuring a new twin exhaust setup, and the racecar like front air dam. Would be nice if those wheels from the race team made it tofinal production too.

Of course, this also means the drivetrain for the über GTI is getting a run, seeing as it is highly likely both cars will be pretty close to identical under the skin.

Depending on who you believe power should be around the 200-220kW region and full public debuts are expected in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

evo reviews new Golf GTI

Volkswagen Golf VI GTI

Respected mag evo recently filed a review on the new Mk6 Golf GTI. Reviewer Henry Catchpole almost didn’t like it, “as I link one fourth-gear left-hander with another fourth-gear right-hander there just aren’t any fireworks making me go ‘ooh’ or ‘ahh’. Then we reach The Corner…”

For their take read the review in full, which also includes some neat stuff about Wolfsburg and the Autostadt as well.

Well that sucks

Volkswagen Scirocco

After having hopes raised last month, it seems the Volkswagen Scirocco is not on the cards for Australian customers after all.

Continuing the on again, off again saga is an article on The Motor Report quoting VW Aus marketing boss Karl Gehling, “We like the car but cannot bring it here. We are still looking at it but have no plans to release it in Australia.”

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em

Porsche & Volkswagen logosAfter plenty of wrangling it looks as though the Porsche-Volkswagen takeover will end up being a friendly merger. At least, that’s how it is being played out in media reports across the globe.

The merger, announced today, will put an end to Porsche’s takeover bid and it is hoped the combined approach of the two companies will help circumvent the Lower Saxony “VW law” that could see any takeover plans quashed, despite Porsche being the majority shareholder in Volkswagen.

Both Porsche and Volkswagen have released brief press statements (available after the jump) and we’ve been told to expect more detailed news in the next month as to just how this merger will take shape.

In the meantime, check out this report from the BBC for a more in depth analysis.

Volkswagen to Porsche: Anything you can do…

Porsche & Volkswagen logosThe Porsche-Volkswagen tale appears to have a few twists in the offing. In January, Porsche became the majority shareholder of Volkswagen. Although, there is still the Lower-Saxony ruling, preventing outright control of Volkswagen by another party, to be overcome.

And now, well, things are seeming to spice up somewhat. How much of the latest developments are speculation, fact or even outright fantasy is open to debate, but you can be sure that all bases have been covered.

But, is Volkswagen really considering a takeover bid all of its own?

That is the conclusion drawn by a report in today’s Sydney Morning Herald which claims Volkswagen itself wants to buy Porsche.

Then, a story on CarAdvice runs a quote from Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn that everything is hunky dory and he can’t wait to get into bed with the Stuttgart massive.

Adding further intrigue to that last point is a story on autoblog reporting on a rumour that Porsche and Volkswagen will be playing CEO swapsies, with Winterkorn moving south and Wendelin Wiedeking moving north to Wolfsburg.

Whatever the outcome, let’s hope this ends up a long and successful relationship that produces worthwhile offspring. Think Henry Fonda followed by Jane, Peter and Bridget; not Britney Spears and Kevin Federline and whatever is to become of Sean and Jayden.

Dream a little dream of me

Volkswagen Scirocco

Could it be? Internet scuttlebutt has surfaced recently suggesting the gorgeous Volkswagen Scirocco could be closer to Australian reality than first thought.

To date we’ve been lead to believe it’s too hard, the price isn’t right, Volkswagen Germany doesn’t want to play ball. Or that maybe the only way to get the Scirocco down under is the über R20T version, based on the Studie R. Perhaps you could import one yourself from New Zealand. The United States have lucked out.

But, now, thanks to a few simple words on the pistonheads forum, Australian readers have been given renewed hope. According to this post the Scirocco is undergoing local evaluation and could be in Australia later this year, or possibly 2010. The demand appears to exist for the car. Even as far back as May last year AUSmotive readers were in full support of the Scirocco landing on our shores. Go on Volkswagen Australia … you know it makes sense!

A selection of images follows below, just to help keep that Scirocco dream alive.

Volkswagen UK announces Golf GTD pricing

2009 Volkswagen Golf GTD

UK pricing for the hot diesel-powered Golf GTD will start at £21,850, for a manual equipped 3 door, and £22,345 for the 5 door model. Those with a preference for the 6-speed DSG will need to dip into their piggy bank for a further £1305.

The car is due for delivery on 22 June and pre-orders can be placed with UK dealers now.

The 2.0 common-rail TDI produces 170PS (125kW) and 350Nm of torque. And, it’s a case of useable power not coming at the expense of the hip pocket, as the theoretical range from a tank of diesel is 640 miles (1030km).

The GTD is a Golf GTI in all but name, and engine configuration, of course. It comes with similarly styled body kit and interior. The tartan seat fabric has been toned down a smidge, but the flat bottom wheel remains.

AUSmotive has spoken with a Volkswagen Australia representative and the GTD is yet to be confirmed for local delivery. VW Aus are excited by the car and are working on securing the GTD for Australian release. Stay tuned for more news as it comes to hand.

Haldex extends AWD partnership with Volkswagen

Volkswagen Tiguan testing Haldex AWD system on snow/ice

Swedish all-wheel drive manufacturer Haldex has secured an AU$740M contract to supply AWD components for Volkswagen’s new modular platform concept due in 2012. Essentially this will mark the production of the fifth-generation of the Haldex system.

This extension of the partnership with the Volkswagen Group marks the largest agreement for Haldex and as you can imagine they’re pretty chuffed about the news.

“It is a success for Haldex that VW has named Haldex as its choice of long-term partner in connection with VW’s plans to expand its four-wheel drive offering”, says Joakim Olsson, President and CEO of Haldex. “The order from VW must be viewed in the light of Haldex’s leadership in terms of function, performance and competitiveness in the market for four-wheel-drive systems that match ever-stronger demand trends in respect of safety, low energy consumption and costs.”

Haldex has a strong history with Volkswagen which has employed Generation I, II and IV Haldex systems across the Volkswagen Group portfolio, which includes Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bugatti and Lamborghini.

The full press statement from Haldex is available below.

Its a gas gas gas

Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 CNG

Volkswagen will be sending a pair of natural gas powered Scirocco GT24s to race at the Nürburgring 24 hour race in May this year. They will be joining a trio of petrol powered GT24s.

The 130 RON compressed natural gas race fuel suits the turbo engines in the Scirocco and the cars are good for a smidge under 300bhp. The CNG powered cars will be headed by German touring car ace Klaus Niedzwiedz.

Autostadt counts 18 millionth visitor

Autostadt, Wolfsburg, Germany

Car enthusiast heaven, otherwise known as the Autostadt, in Wolfsburg, Germany, recently saw its 18 millionth visitor through the turnstiles. Visitor numbers are nine years ahead of schedule. The Autostadt opened its doors on 1 June 2000, with predictions of 1 million visitors per annum. A figure which, in reality, has turned out to be 2 million visitors each year.

The Volkswagen Auto Group theme park has unique pavilions for all of the marques in its stable. That’s Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Seat, Skoda and, of course, Volkswagen. Also included is general auto museum featuring notable cars from outside the VAG history books, as well.

It’s a pretty amazing place, dominated by the twin glass car towers where buyers can collect their new cars from. You can get a taste of that experience from this previous AUSmotive article. If you get the opportunity I highly recommend a visit. Volkswagen’s press release can be read after the jump, along with a few happy snaps of my own from my visit in 2006.

Further information can be read at autostadt.de and volkswagen.com.
