EXCLUSIVE: VW Scirocco one step closer to Australian shores

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Cast your mind back to December last year, when news emerged that the 155kW Scirocco 2.0 TSI and 195kW Scirocco R had been granted approval under the Federal Government’s Specialist & Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS). A post in the comments section of AUSmotive’s article revealed that this approval had been sought not by Volkswagen Australia, but by Melbourne-based importers the Australian Vehicle Import & Compliance Company (AVICCO). At the time I promptly fired off an email to AVICCO seeking further clarification of what this SEVS deal involved. Nothing…

…until yesterday morning. That was when I received the following news from a representative of AVICCO, “After a few ups and downs over a few months, we got the good news yesterday that we can bring USED Sciroccos under the RAWS scheme into Australia.”

Okay, the key word there is “used”. Perhaps not the way many Scirocco fans in Australia were hoping the car would arrive here, but given Volkswagen Australia’s apparent lack of willingness to introduce the model down under, this is a welcome step indeed. The variants of the Scirocco approved under the scheme, as noted, are the 2.0 TSI and R versions.

AVICCO have confirmed with AUSmotive that they have a client ready and willing to pony up the cash to bring in a sample car, sourced from the UK, to be used for compliance purposes. Assuming that process is given the sign off by the Feds, AVICCO expects to be in a position to offer the Scirocco to Australian customers in the second half of 2010.

Warranty and pricing information is still unconfirmed at this stage, but the 2.0 TSI version could well be in the same ball park as the current Golf GTI.

It’s hard to believe that it is as far back as May 2008 that it first became clear the Volkswagen Scirocco had a willing audience here in Australia. Now, almost two years on, it appears someone is ready to do what Volkswagen Australia won’t, and that is to bring the reality of the Scirocco on Australian shores within touching distance.

If you would like to be kept up to date on the progress of the Scirocco coming to Australia, I have been asked to invite you to send an email to AVICCO: sciroccoproject@avicco.com

UPDATE 14 March: Further clarification from AVICCO has been received on what the definition “used” might mean for their planned Volkswagen Scirocco imports. To qualify as a used vehicle under the relevant scheme a car only needs to have been registered in the original country, in this case the UK, before being put on a ship. For example, the registration period could be as little as one day. According to AVICCO, Australian customers could order a Scirocco to their exact spec and they will handle the rest. Sounds a bit better than importing a low mileage car that could have some question marks over it.

Geneva: Volkswagen wants to dominate hybrid market

Volkswagen Golf Hybrid due in 2013

Volkswagen have announced at the Geneva Motor Show that they want in on the hybrid vehicle market. And they want in in a big way. In 2013 Volkswagen will launch hybrid models of the volume-selling Golf and Jetta models. A move VW expects will lead them to “dominate the hybrid and electric vehicle market”.

Indeed, Volkswagen’s Chairman, Professor Martin Winterkorn, has stated, “The goal is to become the market leader in E-mobility by the year 2018.

“We will take the hybrid out of its niche status with our high-volume models. In the future, the heart of the brand will also beat with electricity.”

The move to mass market penetration will begin next year when Volkswagen releases an evaulation fleet of 500 Golf hybrids. Volkswagen also expects electric drive technology to filter across all of its group brands.

Of course, Volkswagen have already dipped their tow into the hybrid market with the new Touareg. Audi, too, has it’s e-tron lineup. And the Porsche 918 Spyder is the undisputed star of the Geneva Motor Show so far.

More after the break.

Geneva: Volkswagen CrossGolf

Volkswagen CrossGolf

Volkswagen claim the Golf is “the most successful vehicle concept of all times”. Presumably they have reached this conclusion based on total sales. So, is it any wonder that they are milking the platform with the CrossGolf, the sixth model line in the Golf range.

Essentially what you see is what you get. A body based on the GolfPlus, including an extra 20mm ride height, a few exterior plastic bits and some model specific interior trim. Voila, a new model.

It is unlikely we will ever see the CrossGolf in Australia. Which is a shame. A real shame. Just wait until you see the new Subaru Impreza XV, which will be here mid-year. Somebody really needs to tell Subaru’s designers to stop the madness!

I digress, more pics and details of the comparatively attractive, but probably quite pointless CrossGolf can be seen after the jump.

CrossPolo bobs up prior to Geneva

Volkswagen CrossPolo

Volkswagen’s new CrossPolo will join the Polo GTI in making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in just over a week. The CrossPolo is the fourth in the range, also including the regular Polo hatch, the fuel efficient BlueMotion and the sporty GTI.

Described by Volkswagen as an “all-rounder”, the CrossPolo has been raised by 15mm. A number of exterior tweaks have also been carried out which further enhance the model’s individual look compared to the rest of the Polo lineup.

A total of six engines will be offered to European customers, split evenly between petrol and diesel power. Following tradition, the CrossPolo will only be available in a 5 door layout and, new for this iteration, all models will be available with a 7-speed DSG transmission.

German customers will get their hands on the CrossPolo first, with deliveries commencing in May, with the rest of Europe and Japan to follow shortly after. No word yet on Volkswagen Australia’s plans for the car, but I would expect they will want it, but possibly with a limited engine lineup.

Further details and more pics are available after the break.

Volkswagen Polo GTI breaks cover ahead of Geneva

Volkswagen Polo GTI

Volkswagen have released three images of its new Polo GTI ahead of next month’s Geneva Auto Salon. As expected, the latest baby GTI will be powered by a 1.4 litre twincharge engine, which has a supercharger providing low down boost before a turbo chimes in to keep the smile on your dial up to redline.

The headline stats of the TSI powerplant are, peak power of 180PS (132kW) with 184ft/lb (250Nm) of torque. Tipping the scales at a modern day lightweight 1184kg the Polo GTI can accelerate to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds. This is achieved, in part, thanks to a 7-speed DSG transmission and and electronic XDS differential, similar to the system found in the Golf GTI.

Aside from all that, the new Polo GTI looks fantastic. There’s been a huge step in interior layout and refinement over the underrated model it replaces and the new exterior styling of the regular Polo has been enahnced by LED daytime lighting and a subtle body kit.

The Polo GTI promises to be one cracker of a hot hatch. A press release from Volkswagen UK is below and when we hear from Volkswagen Australia you’ll be able to read it here.

UPDATE: Volkswagen Australia have confirmed with AUSmotive that the Polo GTI will be on sale locally before the end of 2010. No news on pricing or final specs at this stage.

2010 Golf Wagon – Australian pricing

2010 VW Golf Wagon

Volkswagen Australia have just released an Estate version to their volume selling Golf range. Known in Australia as the Golf Wagon, it will be initially offered in two model lines—Trendline and Comfortline.

Entry level pricing, before those nasty delivery and government charges, starts at $26,990. That gets you a 90kW 1.4 TSI Trendline with 6 speed manual. The top of the range model, 103kW 2.0 TDI Comfortline with 6 speed DSG, is priced from $36,490. The usual range of options is also available and a list of prices is available below.

Four engines will be available for those wanting the maximum 1495 litres of cargo space the Golf Wagon provides. Two 1.4 TSI engines, with either 90kW or 118kW are complemented by a 77kW 1.6TDI and a 103kW 2.0 TDI. The full gamut of Volkswagen transmissions is on offer, including 5 and 6 speed manuals in addition to 6 and 7 speed DSG offerings. At a basic level you can choose a manual or DSG with all engine choices, the numbers of cogs you get depends on the engine choice.

This is the first time we have seen a Golf Estate/Variant/Wagon in Australia and it remains to be seen how successful this addition to the Golf line up will be. I know one thing, though, they’d sell a lot more of them if they bothered to get Volkswagen to design the rear of the car. Instead, it looks like they just picked up some 1990s Honda Accord tail lights, stuck them on the back and thought, that should do it. When the rest of the Volkswagen range is, generally, so expertly styled—and of particular note here is the Passat Wagon—one has to wonder just how on earth they came to this conclusion.

2010 Volkswagen Touareg – due in Australia next year

2010 Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen unveiled it’s new Touareg in Munich yesterday. It’s certainly a sharper looking car than the model it replaces, and it’s 200kg lighter, as well. The savings don’t stop there, either, with reductions in fuel consumption of 20% expected.

The launch was dominated by a V6 Hybrid version which offers 280kW and 580Nm of torque, thanks to a 245kW 3.3-litre supercharged V6 and a 35kW electric motor. The full zero-emissions range is a modest 50 kilometres.

The styling is very much of the emerging Volkswagen design language, with cues taken from the new Polo, Golf VI and Compact Coupe. The new Touareg is 40mm longer than the first generation, with the overall length now measuring 4758mm. The SUV’s wheelbase has grown by the same amount to a new figure of 2900mm. The sportier more taught look is helped by the car’s height dropping by 20mm to 1724mm. However, the width is unchanged at 1928mm.

European sales of the new Touareg will commence in the next few months. The exact date of arrival in Australia is uncertain at this stage. Although we do know the Touareg will arrive some time in 2011. Those wanting the the Hybrid version will be disappointed as Volkswagen Australia don’t believe there is a strong enough case for that model to bring the model down under. You’ll have to make to with regular petrol or diesel options.

Volkswagen describes the new Touareg as the most “technically innovative” model it has ever produced. That’s some claim, best read the press blurb after the jump to see what all the fuss is about.

Volkswagen Golf – Safest car of 2009

Volkswagen Golf VI

In 2009 , for the first time, the EuroNCAP authority collated its test results from a single year and announced its safest cars of the calendar year. With a total of 103 points the Golf VI topped last year’s list, which also included an impressive 97% score for Adult Occupant protection.

When the Golf VI was first released in 2008 it was granted a five-star rating. However, in 2009 EuroNCAP introduced stricter testing procedures and the Golf VI, along with 32 other cars, were tested in 2009 under the revised program.

The Golf finished ahead of the Honda Insight in the 2009 rankings. Third on the table was the new Toyota Prius, followed by the Hyundai i20, before a triumvirate of equally rated cars—Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and Opel/Vauxhall Astra.

Official EuroNCAP footage of the Golf’s earlier 2008 test can be seen after the jump, reminding you just how ugly a vehicle crash in motion actually looks.

New Golf R to cost less than old R32

Volkswagen Golf R

We know the Golf R is coming to Australia, and we know it should be hear by the middle of 2010. What we don’t know is how much customers should expect to pay for what is essentially an Audi S3 in Volkswagen clothing. Signs from the UK are not good, with the Golf R costing around £2000 more than the S3.

However, it would appear that will not be the case in Australia with the Golf R looking like it will enter the local market quite a few thousand dollars cheaper than the S3. Speaking about the new Golf R to carsales.com.au, Karl Gehling, General Manager Press and PR for Volkswagen Australia, said, “It’s going to be priced between the current R32 and the GTI.”

So we can expect some very sharp pricing for the Golf R, then. Happy days. The outgoing R32 had a starting list price of $57,990. Entry level pricing (including GST and LCT) for the Audi S3 is $66,500. While Gehling states the Golf R will hit the market priced between the old R32 and the current GTI (around $40K, depending on configuration) one would assume the final price will be much closer to the R32 than the GTI. Still, even at a starting price of $57,990 the Golf R represents cracking value.

Also revealed by Gehling was a sneak preview of the Golf R’s local specification. In order to keep Golf R pricing so sharp items such as leather sports seats, Adaptive Chassis Control, 19” alloys (shown in the image above) and more will remain on the options list.

iMOTOR reviews new Golf R

iMOTOR reviews new Golf R

Following their review of the new Golf GTI last year, British e-mag iMOTOR is now showing off in the new Golf R. In a brief written review they claim “the Golf R is brilliant. In fact, it’s the most exciting production Volkswagen ever.”

Although, the kick in the guts for the Golf R in the UK market is its pricing. For £2000 less than the asking price of the R you can get an Audi S3. That’s over $3500 is Australian terms. Nothing has been confirmed for local pricing, but educated speculation sees the Golf R hitting showrooms with a sub $60K sticker price. This would be almost $5000 less than entry level S3 pricing. I guess we shall have to wait and see, suffice to say, pricing the Golf R higher than the equivalent Audi would be a fast way to intensify sibling rivalry in the Australian market.

Anyway, back to the iMOTOR gig, in their video footage they compare the Golf R to the Ford Focus RS. While it seems clear the RS is going to win in the raw thrills stakes it is the Volkswagen’s ability to, once again, be the better all-rounder that will be its greatest selling point. Shame the mini-test was held on snow covered tarmac, but it does give a very graphic comparison of the R’s 4motion all-wheel drive system.

So, what are you waiting for, click on the image above to load the iMOTOR review now.

For an alternate view, check out Autocar’s thoughts. They ran the Golf R against the Ford as well as the Renaultsport Megane 250. Again, they reckon the Golf R’s strength lies in its versatility. But they also had this to say, “the Ford and Renault are singing from an entirely different hymn sheet. They are designed to intentionally singe your fingers from time to time and be much more exciting company as a result.”

Rumour: Volkswagen to launch R GmbH at Geneva

Volkswagen R badge

Several motoring blogs are reporting the news that Volkswagen will launch a new and separate performance division at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. It is understood the company will be titled simply ‘R GmbH’, following in the footsteps of the family’s similar Audi performance branch Quattro GmbH.

R GmbH will be responsible for building performance models with less compromise than can be afforded under the Volkswagen umbrella.

One quote currently doing the rounds allegedly confirming this news stems from Inside Line, who claim a Volkswagen exec told them this, “BMW has its M, Mercedes has AMG, and our sibling Audi has Quattro. This new R division will be our Quattro.”

It is also being suggested that Volkswagen will release a Jetta R, based on the Compact Coupé. If true, this will make the third model to boast ‘R’ bragging rights, joining the Golf R and Scirocco R.

Presumably the existence of R GmbH would indicate a succession of ‘R’ models to follow, including the likes of Passat, Polo, Touareg and more. Sounds good to me.

The hills R alive…

Volkswagen Golf R

Volkswagen have taken to the hills of Austria with their eagerly anticipated 199kW all-wheel drive Golf R. Providing music to the ears of Australian fans of this car, we know the new R will be coming, but we don’t know when. Depending on who you ask, the estimated time of arrival varies from as soon April-May, to as far away as October. My educated guess, based on comments from VW Australia’s MD,  is we will see the Golf R down under somewhere around the middle of the year. To cover my bases a bit, let’s allow a couple of months either way.

As for Australian pricing of the Golf R, again, speculation is rife. Some people reckon the car will be in the low $50K range. Frankly, I think that is overly optimistic. If I was planning to buy a Golf R I’d be budgeting on a starting price for a 3-door manual around the $56-59K range, with on-roads and options to be added.

One thing is sure, when Volkswagen Australia lets us know the real deal, you will be able to read all about it here on AUSmotive. Speaking of reading all about it, after the jump is a mega-press release from Volkswagen AG, as well as a dozen or so new images. If you want this car it might be a sound idea to bookmark this URL as the info provided will serve as a great reference point while you’re waiting for your new pride and joy to arrive.
