Volkswagen CC – Australian pricing & specs

Volkswagen CC

Volkswagen Australia has recently launched the updated CC to the local market. They’ll be offering two models for sale, the 2.0 litre 125TDI ($54,990) and the 3.6 litre V6 FSI ($64,990).

We reckon the CC has matured nicely compared to its predecessor, the Passat CC. We also reckon the 220kW V6 FSI is the model to buy, as it represents one of the last chances to get your hands on Volkswagen’s delightful bent six cylinder engine. To help sweeten the deal, Volkswagen has fitted its 4motion all-wheel drive system as standard to the V6 model.

As it is the CC range is quite well equipped, boasting features such as satellite navigation, rear view camera and a Driver Fatigue Detection system.

Optional equipment includes Adaptive Cruise Control with City Emergency Brake feature, Side Assist and Lane Assist, as well as Active Climate Control which also brings a gentle massage function to the front seats.

We hope you like DSG technology because that’s all you’re getting. In the CC, the transmission retains a traditional 6-speed set up.

Overall we give the CC a qualified thumbs up; we like the exterior but think the interior could do with a bit of a spruce up. There’s not much wrong with it, being a Volkswagen, but it’s starting to show its age.

Volkswagen ready to takeover Porsche

Volkswagen-Porsche merger complete

The protracted negotiations for the addition of Porsche to the Volkswagen Group stable have been completed and will take effect on 1 August, the two companies have announced. Plans for this move started in 2009 and Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen AG (pictured right), says the deal is, “good for Volkswagen, good for Porsche and good for Germany as an industrial location.”

New German tax laws have enabled the deal to be brought forward, after complications saw the original deadline for completion of the merger missed at the end of last year. Volkswagen will hand over one ordinary share to Porsche and assume total ownership of the holding company controlling the sportscar maker. In exchange Porsche will receive €4.46b.

At the press conference announcing the finalisation of the takeover Volkswagen’s CFO, Hans Dieter Pötsch, explained the benefits of the approach taken. “The course we are following makes strategic sense and will bring sustained benefits for all stakeholders, it creates transparency as to future developments, and lays the foundations for swiftly intensifying cooperation between Volkswagen and Porsche AG. For Volkswagen, our sound financial and liquidity position and maintaining our strong rating are also important”, he said.

With plans for massive investment Dr Winterkorn told reporters to expect big things. “We’re wrapping up one of the most significant projects in the automotive world,” Winterkorn said. “Together we are more capable than ever of becoming the best auto company on the planet.”

Volkswagen Polo R WRC testing in Finland

A few days ago we brought you some video of Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia testing the Volkswagen Polo R WRC in Finland. New pics and video have come our way and it would be rude not to share.

After the testing Jost Capito, Volkswagen’s head of motorsport, said the team is on track for its 2013 WRC debut. At least two cars are confirmed for the opening race in Monte Carlo. Ogier will get the first, with the Jari-Matti Latvala rumour for the second getting stronger by the day.

There’s a small chance Volkswagen could enter three cars for the Monte, but reports of as many as four or five appear wide of the mark according to Capito.

“There is a scenario to get a third car at the start in Monte Carlo,” Capito told rallye-magazin.de. “But only if one has everything under control and if everything works the way we imagine and if we have enough experience in the team.

“Volkswagen is accustomed to success and is ambitious. But in contrast to the established teams from Ford and Citroen, Volkswagen cannot fall back on ten years of experience in the rally circus.

“The WRC is for our car, our technology and our team completely new territory. There are many tests ahead and many things that we will do to be even better. We work towards this. I think that we will have a competitive car in early 2013.”

It’s expected Volkswagen will confirm its 2013 driver line up at Rally Deutschland in late August.

VIDEO: Polo R WRC jumps for joy in Finland

Volkswagen Polo R WRC

Sebastien Ogier has been sightseeing in Finland recently. His employers, Volkswagen, were kind enough to pass on a Polo R WRC test mule as a means of transport. Luckily for us a few Finnish rally fans were on hand to capture the airborne hi jinx.

Also on hand for test duties was a Skoda Fabia S2000, which Ogier has been racing during the 2012 season. Like all of us, we suspect, Ogier is probably hoping Volkswagen might turn up to, let’s say, Italy or Spain at the end of the year and say, “Why don’t you take the Polo out this weekend Seb.”

195kW predicted for Mk7 Golf GTI

VW Golf VII GTI spied at the Nurburgring

We’ve brought you plenty of updates on the Golf VII GTI already, but now Autocar is predicting a significant power boost for the Golf icon. It was previously reported the 2.0 litre turbo in the next GTI would have around 165–170kW, but suggestions now predict as much as 195kW (260hp).

Due for sales release in 2013 the new GTI will feature a “VAQ” limited slip differential, which Volkswagen expects will provide noteworthy improvements to the car’s grip and handling.

Volkswagen’s new MQB platform will offer weight savings compared to the Mk6 Golf, which could be complemented by the use of aluminium body panels for the roof and floor on the GTI. It’s also worth noting the next Golf R may feature a carbon fibre roof.

We’re not entirely sure if those power predictions will be accurate. Although, when you consider the power provided by the Renaultsport Megane, perhaps VW is just playing catch up.

Make sure you check out the video below, showing the Mk7 GTI being tested at the Nürburgring.

Mk7 Golf GTI prototype suffers from shyness

Volkswagen Golf VII GTI prototype

If you look closely, beneath that heavy camouflage, trying to peek out is a honeycomb grille. That and the lowered stance of the Golf VII prototype are the best clues that we’re looking at the next-gen GTI.

The regular Golf is due for its worldwide debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, so don’t expect to see the GTI in showrooms anywhere until 2013. And we’d say it’ll be late next year before there’s any chance of seeing one in an Australian dealership.

So far the gossip on the Golf VII GTI tells us we can expect it to weight 100kg less, have around 165–170kW and maybe even a mechanical LSD. We’re very keen to see how it shapes up.

While the sales debut of the new GTI won’t take place until next year, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Volkswagen got fans around the world a tad worked up by turning up to Paris with a “concept” GTI.

Volkswagen at 2012 Wörthersee show

Volkswagen at the 31st GTI show in Worthersee

In addition to the Golf GTI Black Dynamic and show stopping Polo R WRC “Street” Volkswagen presented a number of other models at the GTI show in Wörthersee.

Not a lot of detail is given on the cars they brought along. Indeed the Scirocco R Concept Blue on show doesn’t even rate a mention in the official press release. But then this a show that’s all about engaging with the fans and not necessarily one for comprehensive model roll outs.

Perhaps the most notable model on display was the Polo R WRC “Race”, kitted out as though it could start a special stage tomorrow. Powered by a 1.6 litre TSI engine Volkswagen Motorsport say it will reach 100km’h in 4.1 seconds. On tarmac, presumably?

Actually, don’t be surprised if Volkswagen Motorsport makes a cheeky late race debut with its Polo R WRC for an event or two in the 2012 WRC season.

Anyway, check out the info Volkswagen has passed on after the break.

Wörthersee 2012: VW Polo R WRC “Street”

Volkswagen Polo R WRC Street

Feast your eyes on this, it’s a Polo R WRC “Street” and it’s packing a 162kW punch thanks to a 2.0 litre TSI engine. Impressive? Almost as impressive as this encouragement from Volkswagen’s teasing press release, which states the road-going model is “due to be launched in late 2013.”

For now the horsepower and engine size is all Volkswagen has given away. Seems pretty clear the engine is a mildly tuned Golf GTI engine, but what we really need to know now is will the Polo R WRC “Street” feature a 4motion all-wheel drive system, and will it offer a manual gearbox?

There’s a handful of other images from Wörthersee after the break. We’ll bring you any new info on this car as soon as we hear it.

Wörthersee 2012: VW Golf GTI Black Dynamic

Volkswagen Golf GTI Black Dynamic

The annual “GTI” show is currently underway in Wörthersee, Austria, and nine young VW apprentices have been thrown the keys to a Mk6 Golf GTI and told to go crazy. They’ve come up with the Golf GTI Black Dynamic.

The kids haven’t messed about either, upping power by a whopping 110kW, to a new total of 265kW. Eight-pot brakes up help slow things down in what must be a damn fast GTI. They’ve also chucked in an ear splitting 1800W sound system. All that has been adorned by a custom paint-scheme and interior touches.

It’s a pretty nifty opportunity and trainee automotive mechatronics technician Martin Schmidt was pretty chuffed to be part of the action: “For our team, the GTI Black Dynamic is the high point of our training. The amount that we have learned is incredible, and we have developed our own ideas and implemented them in ‘our’ car. Where else do you get an opportunity like that?”

VW Polo R WRC practising tarmac attack

Volkswagen Polo R WRC

Volkswagen has been continuing its development of the Polo R WRC on the sunny Spanish tarmac. This video was filmed recently and shows Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia having what seems to be a damn good time. Empty roads, no pressure of competition, just going as fast as you damn well can.

Our last update from Volkswagen was back in March. In the past when an unofficial video like this one has turned up official word and pictures have soon followed. We think the Polo R WRC looks great here in tarmac-spec and hope we get another update from Volkswagen very soon.

Volkswagen rejects F1 (again) in favour of WRC

Volkswagen Polo R WRC

Incoming Volkswagen Motorsport boss Jost Capito has quickly earned his stripes by becoming the latest VW executive to declare the company has no interest in Formula One. Instead, the German giant will focus its attention on its Polo R WRC program, due to start competing in 2013.

Even a radical change to F1’s regulations in 2014, when cars will be powered by 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engines, are not enough to attract Volkswagen into the sport.

Speaking to Autosport Capito emphatically denied Volkswagen had any interest in F1, ruling out an engine supplier role by saying: “Definitely not. At the moment we don’t even think about it because we’re thinking WRC.

“I’ve got my hands full with the WRC right now and we have to focus on that. This is the very much the main motorsport programme for us and the board is watching it very closely. I think that’s what we have to deliver.”

Would you buy a Volkswagen up! crossover?

Volkswagen buggy up!

A favourable response to the buggy up! and cross up! concepts has encouraged Volkswagen to seriously consider adding a crossover variant to its up! range, German newspaper Handelsblatt reports.

The up! is built at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia and manager Albrecht Reimold says the up! was designed to carry a range of different models. Although, he would not go on record to confirm production plans for the up! crossover.

Handelsblatt claims the up! crossover would sell for less than €20,000—around three quarters of the price of an entry level Tiguan.

Australian sales data indicates the demand for SUVs has created a current that can’t be stopped. Would a wee SUV like the up! find a market here do you think?
