Volkswagen Golf VII images leaked?

Volkswagen Golf VII leaked image

Are these the first images of the all-new Volkswagen Golf? We’ll know for sure in a day or two as the official reveal is due to take place in Berlin today. We expect we’ll have the official word from Volkswagen late tonight Australian time.

We’re not entirely sure if these blurry pics are completely accurate, but they look legitimate enough. Let’s get it out straight away, then. Those tail lights are rubbish. Let’s hope the arrival of official pictures helps to clear things up.

There’s also two images of the new Golf’s interior. Looks about what you’d expect to see from VW, with a revised layout still following the familiar Golf theme.

More Golf VII details leaked in two videos

Volkswagen Golf VII

Last week Autocar brought us some official numbers for the next-generation Volkswagen Golf. Turns out they were probably presented in the (edited) video we see here.

As you can see the dimensions of the Mk7 compared to the Mk6 Golf are quite similar and so too is the car’s side profile. Volkswagen has kept the interior quite similar also, with only minor modifications to the basic layout. You can see more on the interior in this video featuring sketched illustrations.

However, the list of safety features and infotainment systems will be in for a big upgrade. For the first time on a Golf we’ll be seeing the following features (among others):

  • Multicollision brake
  • Touch screen with proximity sensoring
  • LED fog lights
  • PreCrash
  • City Emergency Braking
  • Fatigue detection
  • Traffic sign detection
  • Park Pilot
  • Dynamic Light Assist
  • Lane Assist
  • Front Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Electric parking brake
  • Driving profile selection
  • Cylinder deactivation
  • Run-flat tyres

Some of those features are self-explanatory, for others we may need to wait for the official reveal next week. We’re a little surprised to see run-flat tyres on the list, but at least Volkswagen can rely on the preparatory data gained from almost 10 years of run-flat technology used by BMW.

Mk7 Golf R says don’t you forget about me

Volkswagen Golf R prototype

Amidst all the talk of the new Volkswagen Golf VII debut and the GTI speculation the range topping Golf R has been spotted out on test duties. Actually, we can probably learn a thing or two about the regular Golf range here too.

If you look closely enough at the image above you can just make out a U-shaped detail in the headlight cluster. Our guess is that’s the new LED daytime running light treatment for the Mk7. Also, beneath the number plate you can see a small dome, which we reckon tells us some new Golf models will feature radar-guided cruise control.

Anyway, back to the R; we can tell (or guess) that this prototype is an R by the quad-tipped exhaust tips. Although, it’s worth noting that would mean an end to the R’s usual centre-exit tips.

If we’ve learnt anything from the Mk7 GTI speculation it’s that the way to predict the power of the new model is to just take a wild stab. With that in mind the first bid for the new Golf R is 280hp (approx 210kW).

VW rules out F1 introduction (again)

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

You can’t have a Volkswagen is interested in F1 story without an official denial soon after the rumour emerges. You’ll recall the latest gossip suggested Volkswagen and Sauber were in discussions with a view to forming a partnership in 2014 or 2015.

We’re surprised it’s taken so long for the “we know nothing” party line to come out of VW HQ. This time it’s Stefan Moser, marketing and communication boss, who has been told to spoil the fun.

Speaking to Germany’s motorsport-magazin.com Moser has been quoted as saying: “Nothing has changed since our last statement. We are continuing to focus on the WRC. Entering formula one is not an issue for us right now.”

Killjoy.

Volkswagen Golf GTI concept en route to Paris

VW Golf VII GTI spied at the Nurburgring

Autocar brings word we should expect the next-generation GTI, or at least a near production-ready concept, at the Paris Motor Show next month. The info was tucked away at the end of their article on the new Golf VII:

“At the Paris motor show on 27 September, Volkswagen plans to preview the new Golf GTI. It receives a new 222bhp version of the Audi developed EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine.”

You’ll note today’s guess on power is 222bhp, or around 165kW. That figure has been around since speculation on the Golf VII GTI began. However, we’ve also had suggestions as high as 195kW, which remain dubious about.

Looks like we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Golf VII sized up ahead of world premiere

Volkswagen Golf VII rendering

New and supposedly official details of the new Volkswagen Golf VII have emerged ahead of its world premiere in Berlin on 4 September.

The Mk7 Golf will be the first VW to use the company’s new MQB platform and along with improvements in ride and handling quality it will also give us the largest ever Golf. The new car will be 56mm longer and 18mm wider than the Mk6, but will be 28mm lower. Overall dimensions are 4255mm (length), 1799mm (width) and 1452mm (height).

Slight adjustments have also been made to the car’s track, with an extra 8mm in width for the front wheels and 6mm at the rear.

The increase in size allows rear seat passengers an extra 15mm of legroom, while all passengers will gain extra shoulder room of around 30mm. Elbow room is also improved by an average of 21mm for front and rear passengers.

There’s an extra 30 litres of boot space, with the opening now 1023mm, an increase of 47mm. Internally, the boot now measures 1272mm, up by an impressive 228mm.

Weight reduction is all the rage these days and the new Golf is no different. A variety of measures have been introduced to shed as much as 100kg from the previous generation.

For example, around 7kg has been saved through new seat design, 23kg has been lost from the body-in-white and 3kg has been shed from the wiring loom. An increased use of aluminium suspension components has allowed the Golf VII to drop another 26kg compared to the Golf VI. The new EA211 1.4 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine is 23kg lighter than the EA111 unit it replaces.

Indeed, according to the source article from Autocar, the lightest Golf VII will be just 1050kg.

Of course, we’ll bring you comprehensive coverage of the Golf VII as soon as Volkswagen releases pictures and specifications.

Volkswagen Polo GTI repeats BFYB victory

Volkswagen Polo GTI

The feisty little Volkswagen Polo GTI has gone back-to-back and defended its Bang For Your Bucks award, as judged by Motor Magazine.

The Pogo had to beat 17 other competitors to win the award and Motor claims the 132kW high-demand hot hatch has the essentials required to deserve its praise: “What the Polo GTI aces without question are the fundamentals of not just every great hot hatch but every great car.”

Golf VII to debut on 4 September?

Volkswagen Golf VII rendering

The next-generation Volkswagen Golf is due to be launched on Tuesday 4 September in Berlin, German newspaper Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung reports.

According to the paper, Museum Neue Nationalgalerie has been booked for the event and it means the Golf VII will debut ahead of the Paris Motor Show, where it was previously expected to debut.

Having ownership experience with Mk1, Mk4 and Mk5 Golfs means we’re pretty excited about the new Golf here at AUSmotive. Assuming this report is accurate we look forward to bringing you all the photos and information as soon as they come to hand early next month.

Volkswagen completes Porsche takeover

Volkswagen-Porsche merger

As reported early last month Volkswagen’s takeover of Porsche was due to take effect from 1 August. There’s been no last minute hiccups and Volkswagen has released a short statement to confirm all has gone to plan.

Volkswagen has shown it is able to offer freedom to the other manufacturers under the Volkswagen Group umbrella and these words from Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen AG Chairman, will give Porsche fans some heart: “The unique Porsche brand will continue to develop successfully under Volkswagen’s multibrand strategy and proven decentralized management structure. Porsche will retain its own identity and operational independence, just like all of the other Group brands.”

VW mentioned in same sentence as F1 (again)

2012 German Grand Prix

As often as Volkswagen denies it is interested in Formula One a new rumour emerges. This time it involves the Sauber F1 Team and the theory was given new life at the German Grand Prix last weekend.

Peter Sauber himself is at the centre of the latest speculation, too. When told of the rumours, rather than deny them he simply replied: “Indeed it is so.”

Sauber went on to add: “At the Geneva Motor Show we had a meeting with [Dr Martin] Winterkorn [Volkswagen Chairman]. We are certainly not going to make public the content of the conversation.”

As has been the case in the past, it may be safe to expect nothing further to come of this. If something did happen, it’s likely Volkswagen would play the role of engine supplier when the new regs start in 2014.

Polo R WRC preparing for Rally d’Italia debut

Volkswagen Polo R WRC

In not unexpected news Volkswagen has struck a deal with the FIA that will see its Polo R WRC take part in the second last event of the year on the gravel roads of Rally d’Italia (18–21 October).

The finer details of the agreement are still being finalised and at this stage it appears Sebastien Ogier will participate in the rally but he will not be included in the official timing.

Volkswagen’s marketing head, Stefan Moser, explains they were originally hoping to run the Polo R WRC as the zero car.

“We can’t run as zero car,” said Moser, “but it looks like we will take a test run in Sardinia. We will not run competitively; they [the FIA] allow us to start the race, but we will not take times. We get the answer from the FIA on this subject this week.”

Assuming this all goes ahead as reported, Volkswagen will no doubt have an army of statisticians on hand conducting their own timing. Like many, we’ll be waiting for the results with great anticipation.
