VIDEO: Snail’s pace

This clip is currently orbiting the blogosphere, so why not let it drop in for a spell at AUSmotive HQ. What you’re about to see is the glory of super slow-mo technology. Various forms of motorbike and motor racing categories have been captured and set to music. A special note of thanks to the creator for actually choosing some music that suits the subject matter. Most amateur YouTube compilations have bone jarring death metal pounding out your speakers. Thankfully, if you’re an old fart like me, you’ll enjoy this one.

VIDEO: First laps of the Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit

The 2009 Formula One season has a little over a fortnight to run. The circus heads to Sao Paulo, Brazil, this weekend, followed two weekends later by the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Abu Dhabi race will take place on the Yas Marina Circuit. In true UAE fashion it’s a brand new state of the art facility that should leave the drivers and crews wanting for nothing.

In the footage above you can see Bruno Senna completing a couple of laps of the new circuit. You can follow the links in this article for more info on the track, otherwise strap yourself in for a wide around F1’s newest race track.

How much fun is this thing!

Ken Block and Chris Atkinson in action

Want to see what Ken Block and Chris Atkinson can do with a seriously tricked out Ford Escort rally car? Thought so.

The old Ford might look old skool on the outside, but it’s a little bit fancy on the inside. The two rally lads were let loose in the Escort around the track at the Team O’Neil Rally School. Check out the footage after the jump.

They don’t make ’em like they used to

Here is a delightful old skool television commercial for the Porsche 944 Turbo. No chance of ever seeing an ad like this on our TV screens!

This is also rallying – Canberra style in 1981

Last week AUSmotive showed a great rallying montage from YouTube. Well, for your enjoyment, here’s another one. Albeit on a slightly more local and humble scale. This is some rare footage of the 1981 Castrol Rally which included a few stages on the streets of Canberra’s southern suburbs.

In the good old days of Canberra’s development the NCDC had control of the city and infrastructure for new suburbs was completed well before any houses were built. The perfect location for a tarmac rally, then.

The footage captured in this clip was filmed in the suburb of Fadden—near Bugden Avenue, Partridge Street and Airey Crescent. Make sure you watch for the Datto 1600 right at the end!

This is rallying

Strap yourselves in for 5 minutes and 23 seconds of rallying porn. This “home made” clip captures the highs and lows of rallying, featuring footage from the last 30 years or so. Including plenty of action from the World Rally Championship.

Vatanen, Kankkunen, Sainz, Mäkinen, McRae, Gronholm. Audi, Ford, Lancia, Mitsubishi, Renault, Subaru, Toyota. All the big names are there, and then some. Well, except for Loeb and Citröen. But don’t mind that, this is a superb bit of YouTube kit. Enjoy!

Watch Steve McQueen race Lewis Hamilton

The Duel - McQueen v Hamilton - TAG Heuer Monaco

Watchmaker TAG Heuer has created this spliced video featuring Steve McQueen and Lewis Hamilton to promote its new Monaco 360 LS range. Titled “The Duel” the ad centres around footage from the 1971 film Le Mans, in which McQueen wore an original TAG Monaco.

It’s cheesy, it’s a bit naff, but the watches are tres cool. I think I prefer the original. What about you?

The ad can be viewed after the jump.

A breathtaking display of forceful driving

Old motorsport footage never dies, it just gets faster. This spectacular clip certainly proves that theory. It is from the 1988 Manx Rally, a tarmac event won by Belgian Patrick Snijers.

Marvel at the way he throws around the little E30 M3 around with great skill and, seemingly, no care for the consequences. Amazing stuff!

Doctor, Doctor, give me the news

Just in case you missed the spectacular action from last weekend’s Catalunya round of the MotoGP here it is. You will see Yamaha teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo fighting it out right down to the very last corner.

The Italian commentary only heightens the excitement, never mind that you can barely understand a word!

Enjoy it while you can.
