VIDEO: 1970 Spanish Grand Prix

1970 Spanish GP

After we got that amazing photo of Jackie Stewart at the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix our research led us to this fascinating highlights package of the race. It has a bit of everything, typical F1 politics messing around with qualifying, a fiery accident, close racing and a runaway winner thanks to a high rate of attrition.

The footage also takes you back to a time you can scarcely believe existed. The fact the race continued while the burning debris from the Oliver–Ickx crash was being attended to by fire marshalls makes you thankful to know that would be incomprehensible by today’s standards.

We know you’ll enjoy this wonderful archival footage. It goes for 24 minutes so make sure you’re set and ready to be transported back in time.

VIDEO: The Nissan Juke-R “Desert Nemesis”

Nissan Juke-R

Following yesterday’s preview, here is the full version of the Desert Nemesis short film, featuring the Nissan Juke-R. It runs for about six minutes and the official intro reads:

The film, which is reminiscent of the ‘Need for Speed’ movies, Desert Nemesis follows GT Academy winner Lucas Ordóñez as he takes the one-off Juke-R to the streets of Dubai to take part in a street race against some of the world’s most famous and thrilling sports cars.

A bit like the Juke-R itself we’re not entirely sure if this film has been a worthwhile exercise. As a meaningless journey where the destination is to have a lot of fun and thrash some very nice cars, though, it’s first class.

Jealous, much

Chris Harris drives BMW M3 GTS, Mercedes C63 AMG Black and Porsche GT3 RS 4 litre

Chris Harris has just filed a video that must remind him, and certainly us, what a lucky sod he is sometimes. Never mind he has awoken his own Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 from its winter slumber to take part in this three-piece fantasy; the other two cars are just as fine and just as desirable. Well, almost.

The BMW M3 GTS indulges in some ultra violence with its bright clockwork orange paintwork, while the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series is not backing away from the dark side of the force with a matt black exterior.

Look, like us, you could probably save yourself from the bother and take the RS 4.0, leave the other two behind, and just be done with it. After all, it will be the one genuinely true icon from the three cars assembled. But, life is about the journey, not the destination, and so of course we’d grab the opportunity to test all three on road and empty race track.

We doubt you’ll have your opinions altered with this video, but we think you’ll enjoy the ride. We’re just jealous we weren’t there to experience it too!

VIDEO: Four minutes of madness

Crazy crash video

The video you’re about to see takes us back to a world before the six-point safety harness. Indeed helmets seem optional and the creator of the HANS device would have been laughed out of town.

Some of the footage is shocking, some of it genuinely amazing—that people got up and walked away from some of these crashes has to be seen to be believed. All we can say is, thank goodness they don’t crash ’em like this any more.

It’s another new lap record for Bathurst

Chris Gilmour, Formula 3, Mount Panorama official lap record holder

Motor racing returned to Bathurst over Easter and even though it was a few weeks ago now we’d be remiss not to bring you this video.

You see, Chris Gilmour, a Formula 3 driver from Queensland, set a new official lap record around Mount Panorama in Bathurst.

Gilmour finished second at the race meeting, but was pretty satisfied to set a new benchmark for the 6.213km circuit. “It’s pretty amazing to be here, full stop – but to do something like set the outright lap record that gets talked about so much is pretty special. It requires so much commitment and a great car to do the job here and we had that,” Gilmour said.

Until a few months ago the official lap record, set under race conditions, at Bathurst was held by Jamie Whincup in a V8 Supercar. His mark was 2:08.4651 set during the 2007 Bathurst 1000.

At the Bathurst 12 Hour in February, Allan Simonsen lowered the official race record to 2:06.3311 at the wheel of a Ferrari 458 GT3.

Gilmour, in his Formula 3, broke the record by the best part of two seconds on the way to a 2:04.6187 benchmark. You can watch video of the record lap after the break. It’s pretty special watching on board footage from an open wheeler on the Mountain too.

Targa Tasmania 2012: Lamborghini v Audi

With thanks to Tasmania’s Southern Cross TV we can bring you this excellent in-car comparison from Targa Tasmania. On top of screen is Jason White in a Lamborghini Gallardo, below is Matt Close in an Audi TT RS. At the time, White was leading the event in Modern outright and Close was in third place.

The tarmac covered is TS19 Castra from Day 3 (click here to access a map of the stage). The Lambo was five seconds quicker over the 7.73km stage and it’s interesting to see where it was able to build its lead.

1125bhp, two cars & the world’s best racetrack

Chris Harris drives the Ariel Atom V8 and Noble M600 at the Nurburgring

The Ariel Atom V8 has 475bhp and weighs less than 600kg. The Noble M600 has 650bhp and tips the scales around the 1200kg mark. They’re some healthy ingredients for some seriously healthy speed.

Driving what is little more than a chassis with an engine and four wheels, the Atom V8 is sure to be exhilarating driving it in an underground car park. With no roof, on the worshipped tarmac of the Nordschleife in Germany, it must be as frightening as it is mind blowingly fun. Similarly, the Noble, with the apparent safety of overhead protection is most likely easily forgotten at over 300km/h heading into the kink of the Nürburgring’s main straight.

And so Chris Harris took these two cars to the Ring for the first time ever and filmed a couple of laps. He was there as part of a Destination Nürburgring private track day (sounds like fun).

To be honest, this is not really his best work and the editing, in parts, leaves a little to be desired. Thankfully, they have at least presented two laps of the Nordschleife in the correct sequence.

More than ever, we think this was an experience where you really had to be there to get even close to understanding what the sensations were be like. The feeling of speed would be devastating, but it just doesn’t translate that well. But if you’ve got a spare 24 minutes then this latest Drive clip is a damn good way to spend it.

Once you’re done watching, check out Harris’ blog over at PistonHeads for a nice insight into some of the costs involved in a test like this.

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R v Porsche 911 Turbo S

Nissan GT-R Black Edition v Porsche 911 Turbo S

You might think a video comparing a 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition with a 997 Porsche 911 Turbo S would be pretty entertaining. Especially when you consider the test involves some stunning mountain roads before a balls out drag race on an empty airfield.

Well, we’re not so sure. Take a look at Jonny Lieberman’s work from Motor Trend and let us know what you think.

The first mid-engine car to win the Indy 500

1965 Lotus 38

The 1965 Lotus 38, powered by a 500hp Ford V8, was the first mid-engine car to win the Indianapolis 500. Adding to its provenance immeasurably is the fact the great Jim Clark was the man at the wheel that day.

While this exploded view showing the 38 is hundreds of individual parts is spectacular to look at, it’s nothing compared to the beauty of the finished article. There’s something pure about top line racing cars from that era, perhaps it’s the lack of wings and engine covers. What you see is very much what you get with these machines.

You can click on the image above for a larger and full version of the disassembled Lotus 38. And if you thought that was cool, you’re going to love the video from Road & Track we have for you below. It shows 2010 Indy 500 winner, Dario Franchitti, talking about the 38. Then, better for us, but more so for him, Franchitti was privileged to drive a few laps around the Brickyard as well.

Walter Röhrl on Porsches … and horses

Walter Rohrl talks about Porsches and horses

We stumbled across these videos featuring all-round motoring legend Walter Röhrl. Of course he talks a lot about Porsches (he’s at the wheel of a 997 GT3), but you may be surprised to learn Walter is not too shy to point out an interesting horse when he sees one.

The clips are a few years old now and were published by Motor Trend. Our best guess is they were produced at a media launch for the, then new, 997 911 GT3.

I owe you a 6 second car

Andy Frost, Red Victor 3, Santa Pod raceway

Andy Frost. Red Victor. Those names ring a bell? They’re the central characters in the transformation of a 1972 Vauxhall Victor from family car to drag strip phenomenon.

You may recall Fifth Gear did a story on Red Victor 1 back in 2007 (see original story after the break). Back then it made do with a miserly 2200bhp. Now, in its third iteration, Red Victor 3 is pumping out an incredible 3000bhp. All thanks to a twin turbo 8.8 litre V8.

It can get down the quarter mile in under seven seconds. But that’s only one of its party tricks. Red Victor 3 is street legal, so you can also jump and nip down to the shops for two litres of milk if you like.

At the recent Santa Pod Easter Thunderball event Frost sent RV3 into the record books when he recorded a run of 6.999 seconds. That’s the fastest ever time for a street legal car in Europe.

Watch it all unfold after the break.

Is this or is this not Robert Kubica?

Robert Kubica or not Robert Kubica

A new video has been posted to YouTube with the title “Robert Kubica returns after his accident at Ronde di Andora!” For those playing at home that’s the same event he was competing in when he had his original crash last year.

As recently as last month former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari expressed doubts over a Kubica comeback when he said, “I think his injuries are more than expected.”

That was countered by a friend of the Polish driver who painted a more positive picture, “He drives his road car and goes out by himself. He is still building up the strength in his right arm.”

So, watch the video after the break and see what you think. Whoever is behind the wheel of the plucky Clio S1600 is certainly wringing its neck pretty hard. You’d have to be totally fit to drive like that. The initials RK and a Kubica driver identification sticker are also clearly visible on the car.

But, the Ronde di Aronda rally was run in February. About three weeks after he broke his leg. If Robert Kubica does feature in this video then, we reckon it’s more likely that is him standing by the side of the road in the left of frame.

Watch the clip all the same. By the end if you’re not wishing it was you driving that Clio on those empty winding roads we’ll be very surprised!
