Should Volvo go after the Germans?

Cvhris Harris drives the Volvo S60 Polestar

Cast your mind back to the middle of last year, when Volvo announced its 508hp S60 Polestar. You were probably thinking to yourself, I wonder what that would be like to drive. Well, in this relatively brief clip from Chris Harris we find out.

Kind of.

Conditions were a bit too extreme, insfoar as there was snow all over the place, for a truly objective test, but it looks like Chris had fun anyway. Which is why he also thrashed around in a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG for good measure.

Proving even the best are not immune to simple errors the S60 is powered by an inline six cylinder engine, and a massive blowdryer, not a V6 as noted in the clip. Pretty sure we can all forgive him on that one.

Anyway, since the original release of the details Volvo has said they will make six of these S60 Polestar jobbies. If you have £200K (approx AU$300K) you can get your hands on one. Yikes!

This ain’t no sewing machine!

The Singer 911 by Chris Harris

In my period of relative inactivity I almost missed Chris Harris’ first video of the year, featuring the Singer 911. Shame on me. And, if you don’t know what a Singer 911 is, then shame on you. Thankfully, though, there’s almost 30 minutes of beauty for you after the break.

Generally speaking, I’m not a true fan of old 911s, and strictly speaking these Singer machines aren’t old cars, they just look like that way.

Want.

New balls please

Novak Djokovic thinks he can serve faster than the top speed of an Audi R8 LMS

Sometimes sporting promotions work well. And sometimes they don’t.

Here’s an example of the latter, featuring tennis ace Novak Djokovic and an Audi R8 LMS filmed on the main straight at Sandown. It is so lame and has so many flaws we can’t even be bothered to point them all out.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento arrives in London

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento arrives in London

A couple of weeks ago this footage was filmed showing the one-off Lamborghini Sesto Elemento being delivered to Lamborghini London.

You may recall we were lucky enough to get up close and personal with this stunning creation at the Australian International Motor Show earlier this year. It’s just a totally magnificent car.

While this example is the only one in the world at the moment, a total of 20 Sesto Elementos are expected to be made. And if you’ve got a lazy couple of million bucks burning a hole in your pocket then we suggest you get in touch with your closest Lambo dealer right now.

Weighing in at just 999kg the spectacular carbon fibre origami creation can reach triple figures in 2.5 seconds. That’s thanks to its 570hp 5.2 litre V10. It has to be one of the most extreme cars money can buy.

Which is why watching this video is often times a little disturbing. On the one hand it is quite refreshing to see how unplanned and low key this delivery was. But we also wonder how these guys might go organising a piss up in a brewery.

VIDEO: Ford hoons way into festive season

Ford Snowkhana One xmas video

Ford has hooned its way into the festive season with this stop-animation spoof of Ken Block’s Gymkhana video series. The clip is titled Snowkhana One and would have been a total ball ache to make. The tyre smoke being the standout here.

Have a look at the video after the break and let us know what you think, was it worth the effort?

MINI Countryman gone to the dogs!

MINI Countryman driven by Porter the dog

MINI and first class publicity stunts go hand in hand. And here’s one that will not only make you chuckle, it will also warm your heart. Awwwww.

The Auckland SPCA and MINI have teamed together to teach three dogs how to drive a MINI Countryman. The premise of the stunt suggests if a stray dog is smart enough to be taught how to drive then it deserves a home.

In the video after the break you can see Porter get his few minutes of fame, and, we hope, the path to a safe new home. We’re not sure if his classmates, Monty and Ginny, will also get their own driving video, but we wish them well too.

VIDEO: Ford V8 Supercar v Porsche medical car

Shane Van Gisbergen v Porsche medical car

Here’s something you don’t see everyday, a racecar crashing into an official medical car. In this case we’re talking about the Stone Brothers Racing Falcon, driven by Shane Van Gisbergen, who had a steering failure after a minor crash on the opening lap of the Telstra 500 race in Sydney yesterday.

As Van Gisbergen was limping back towards the pits the medical car, a Porsche Panamera, caught the damaged Falcon and started to pass on its left side. At exactly the wrong moment Van Gisbergen’s car lurched to the right and the result is what you see above.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident and the damage to the Porsche seems mostly cosmetic.

“Hatchbacks are just cool aren’t they!”

Ford Focus ST v Renault Megane RS265 v Opel Astra OPC

Chris Harris has just had a play with three of the hottest hot hatchbacks money can buy: the hideous yet apparently very capable Ford Focus ST, the media’s favourite Renault Megane RS265 and the Vauxhall Astra VXR (coming to Australia as the Opel Astra OPC).

True to form the outcome follows the expected script, but there are some good insights and surprises along the way (note the lap times).

It’s Harris at his best, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Yeah, but who has a spare two mile runway?

Porsche 911 GT2 RS v Ducati 1199 Panigale

Earlier in the year Chris Harris used a Porsche 911 GT2 RS, a Ducati 1199 Panigale and Santa Pod’s quarter mile to entertain us for 18 minutes. Then, the GT2 RS was pretty well smashed. Now, the duel is back on with an empty two mile runway ahead. This clip only goes for a few minutes. We suspect that was to spare the dignity of the most powerful production Porsche yet to be made.

Seriously, how scary is that Ducati?!

The most exciting racing car in 30 years?

Chris Harris drives the Nissan DeltaWing

Chris Harris has been lucky enough to drive the Nissan DeltaWing. We’re lucky enough that he’s been able to share that experience with us in his latest video.

As is often the case with Harris’ videos the detail is where the real joy is found. Of course, the driving scenes are what we all want to see and here him describe. But his chat with the DeltaWing’s designer, Ben Bowlby, gives us a genuine insight into how the car works.

As an aside, how good does the Road Atlanta circuit look. Chicanes, rises, falls with a flowing mix of low and high speed corners. Wish it was 15,000km closer.

VIDEO: 16 minutes of fury!

Porsche 911 GT3 at Rallye Deutschland

Here is what can only be described as an extraordinary ride through the vineyards of Rally Deutschland. Your car is a Porsche 911 GT3 and your crew is Ruben Zeltner (driver) and Helmar Hinneberg (navigator).

Strap yourself in and get ready for 16 minutes of pure adrenalin. It takes enough concentration just to watch the video, imagine the efforts required to drive this stage, with its mix of almost motionless first gear hairpins and fully committed top gear straights.
