Volkswagen Golf R v Seat Leon Cupra 280

Volkswagen Golf R v Seat Leon Cupra 280

Take two Volkswagen Group products to the track, in this case the Golf R and the Leon Cupra 280, thrash them about and see if you can come to a conclusion as to which is best.

The circuit in question is the tight and twisty Cadwell Park and Autocar scribe Steve Sutcliffe is telling the story. The Golf has a bit more power but thanks to its 4motion all-wheel drive system has a bit more weight than the Leon. Both cars share a 6-speed DSG. Remember, the Leon Cupra 280, for a brief moment, held the FWD lap record at the Nürburgring.

What do you think will happen next?

Audi RS3 growls around the Nordschleife

Audi RS3 prototype

We really like the sound of Audi’s inline five cylinder. It’s a unique growl that heightens the senses. And thankfully it seems Ingolstadt is intent on keeping its famed 2.5 litre five pot in the next-gen RS3.

Here’s a clip of an RS3 test mule being put through its paces around the Nürburgring. The body is pretty much standard S3—look to the A3 clubsport quattro for new RS3 inspiration—but there’s no mistaking this car’s five cylinder heart.

Peak power in the RS3 will have to be at least 300kW (400hp) just to keep people interested, but perhaps, like that clubsport quattro Audi will go well beyond 300kW.

Previously it has been suggested we might see the RS3 this year. Latest guesswork says we should expect the RS3 in Geneva next March. We’ll be waiting!

The Porsche 911 GT3 is back!

991 Porsche 911 GT3

After its time on the sidelines it appears as though the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 is back in the hands of owners. Here’s a video from a US owner who was kind enough to record his first drive in anger after getting his GT3 back.

We’re not so sure the authorities will approve of some of the driving skills on show, but we’re confident you’ll love the sound of that revitalised 3.8 litre flat six!

BMW i8 tackles Goodwood FoS hillclimb

Now that the BMW i8 is on sale in Australia this video from the car’s first “dynamic” UK appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed takes on new meaning.

So what is this three-cylinder jobbie with electric sparkles really like? Watch this video to find out. It won’t give you a definitive answer, but it’s still worth watching, even if just to see the impressive line up of supercars the i8 followed up the hill.

Mark Webber in Porsche 911 GT1-98

We’d been waiting for video footage of Mark Webber driving the Porsche 911 GT1-98 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and now here it is.

There’s two clips and the second one from Goodwood TV has some good banter from Mark comparing the 911 GT1 to the Mercedes CLR-GT1 which he originally raced in competition against the Porsche.

The Ferrari 312PB: A flash of brilliance

Ferrari 312PB

“It’s difficult not to get wrapped up in the noise… It is so beautiful.”

Not much more needs to be said about this Ferrari 312PB featured by Petrolicious. The car in question, powered by a glorious 3.0 litre DOHC V12, was made in 1972 and is one of the last sportscar prototypes made by Ferrari before the company began to concentrate its motorsport activities more heavily on Formula 1.

The 312PB won at some of the world’s most noted racetracks, including Brands Hatch, Daytona and the Nürburgring. It was driven by racing luminaries such as Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Ronnie Peterson, Brian Redman, Clay Regazzoni, Carlos Reutemann and even Australia’s own Tim Schenken.

And now, this example, is brought to us as a flash of brilliance in a desolate California landscape.

Let’s talk about the F-Type Project 7

Jaguar F-Type Project 7

News that the Jaguar F-Type Project 7 will reach production status is kind of a big deal. That’s for two reasons, first because an 80kg lighter F-Type with more power is news we can all celebrate, but also because it’s our first chance to see how fair dinkum Jaguar’s new Special Vehicle Operations is going to be.

With thanks to XCAR films we can hear Jaguar’s design guru Ian Callum and John Edwards, Jaguar-Land Rover Special Operations boss, talk about the Project 7, how it came about and what it means for the company.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed truly is one of the motoring world’s great events. It’s becoming increasingly important for manufacturers, who often turn up with world premieres, such as the McLaren 650S GT3 this year.

After the break there’s a collection of clips which showcase the diversity of the cars and drivers on show. Most of the clips have been sourced from the official Goodwood YouTube channel and if you have a spare 24 hours to kill you can watch all the action from the three days of the event.

Porsche 918 tackles Goodwood FoS hillclimb

Porsche 918 Spyder

Let’s start your week with a run up the famed Goodwood hillclimb course, filmed aboard the Porsche 918 Spyder at the Festival of Speed on the weekend.

The brief clip Porsche has made with titled “Sounds of Goodwood 2014” is a nice little treat as well.

Mark Webber was at Goodwood on the weekend and was tasked with the chore of driving the Porsche 911 GT1-98, with any luck Porsche will have some footage of that soon as well.

Predator wolves used to promote Civic Type R

Honda Civic Type R 'Disruption' video

And not just any predator wolves, either, these ones have evil bioluminescent eyes! Not any old cheesy 1980’s film clip bioluminescent, but evil bioluminescent goddamit!

It’s all part of a promo for the new Civic Type R called ‘Disruption’. Here’s a snippet of Honda’s description (and, please, make sure you read the whole thing):

The campaign kicks off with the sixty second film, ‘Disruption’. We open on a sunny suburban street. A family is packing a picnic into the boot of their car. Everything is happy and jolly, including the music. It’s the most generic car film you’ve ever seen. Suddenly, the picture distorts and pixelates and the Honda R-Rated advisory flickers up on screen, as though someone just hijacked the broadcast. We see the Honda R-rated advisory notice appear. The warning disappears into black.

Sounds ace, doesn’t it! (No, not really.) So, what are you waiting for, take the jump and watch this masterpiece…
