Toro Rosso under pressure to improve in 2013

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has put the pressure on his junior F1 team, demanding that Toro Rosso improves in 2013.

Speaking to new FIA magazine AUTO, Mateschitz said: “Toro Rosso is still our rookie team and its goals differ from those of Red Bull Racing. But that’s not to say we’re happy with the development of the car.

“Significant improvements need to be found and are being called for.”

In the year just finished Toro Rosso collected a total of 26 points (Jean-Eric Vergne 16, Daniel Riccardo 10). That was enough to claim ninth place in the constructors’ championship, last of the teams to score championship points; there were only 12 teams in 2012.

In contrast, Toro Rosso’s 2011 season was deemed poor enough to sack both of its drivers. Yet, they finished eighth in the constructors’ title with 41 points (Jaime Alguersuari 26, Sebastien Buemi 15).

Toro Rosso has shown patience by giving Ricciardo and Vergne contract extensions for 2013. Although, both are now on notice that they need to improve next year to have confidence of continuing in 2014.

With expectations that Mark Webber will retire at the end of next year that opens the path to promotion into Red Bull Racing for 2014.

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix in pictures

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

Here’s our last F1 in pictures gallery for the year. It captures Jenson Button’s victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix and also Red Bull celebrating Sebastian Vettel’s third world championship.

It may be the last time we’ll see the likes of Kamui Kobayashi. Heikki Kovalainen, Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna in an F1 car for the forseeable future. Of course, we already know it is the last time we’ll see Michael Schumacher at the wheel of an F1 car. And there’s HRT’s uncertain future to ponder as well.

It’s been a great season and we trust you’ve enjoyed us bringing you these galleries throughout the year.

2012 United States Grand Prix in pictures

2012 United States Grand Prix

A farewell win with McLaren before his switch to Mercedes AMG has been on the cards for Lewis Hamilton for a few races now. He could, of course, win again in Brazil next Monday morning, but for now his entire collection of 21 grands prix victories have been with the Woking-based outfit.

At the moment there is shared love between Hamilton and McLaren. It will be interesting to see how the relationship continues beyond the final race of 2012.

In pondering Lewis Hamilton’s win at the United States Grand Prix, we must also reflect on the race itself. Held at a new venue, reportedly costing US$400 million, it seems as though the locals, and those nearby, loved having a race in Texas. The official race day attendance figure bandied about is 117,429; a very healthy show of support for F1’s return Stateside.

In keeping with that support, we’ve gathered over 100 of the best pics from the teams across the weekend and you can check them all out after the jump!

2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Kimi has done it! With his maiden comeback victory in Abu Dhabi the Iceman has entertained us all far more than he could ever imagine. The race itself was pretty ho hum for Raikkonen. There was plenty of action going on behind him, but after Hamilton retired Kimi simply had to keep his nose clean and the win would be his. And so it proved.

All we need now is for Kimi and Lotus to sign off on the T-shirt created by Retro Formula 1 and we’ll all be able to remember his radio skillz for ever more.

A gallery of 88 pics await after the break.

Ricciardo and Vergne get another year

Toro Rosso re-signs Ricciardo and Vergne

Two more seats for the 2013 F1 season have been locked in with word from Toro Rosso overnight confirming they will retain their current driver line up of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne.

The 23-year-old Australian, who has scored nine points so far this year, is looking forward to building on a solid, if unspectacular, year. “There are big expectations for next year and I’m ready and willing to fulfil them. I feel I have been growing and developing as a driver and my approach to the technical side of the sport has also progressed this year, so I am sure that will serve me well in my second season with Toro Rosso,” Ricciardo said.

The 22-year-old Frenchman, generally out qualified by his teammate, but having scored 12 points sounds almost relieved at the news. “I am really happy about this great news. Thank you Toro Rosso and thank you Red Bull, who have backed me since the early days of my career. It has been a difficult season and, as a rookie, I have learned a lot, thanks to the support I got and the excellent relationship I have enjoyed with all the guys. I feel much stronger now and I know I have become a better driver over the course of the season,” Vergne said.

2012 Indian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel’s seemingly unstoppable march to a record-breaking third world championship continued at the 2012 Indian Grand Prix. Reliving the young German’s latest step in pictorial form are these 103 photos we’ve gathered together for you.

You may recall that most of the field completed the race using a one-stop tyre strategy. Think back to some of our other F1 in pictures galleries and the rubber marbles you see scattered off the racing line. There was no such sight at the Buddh International Circuit on the weekend.

2012 Korean Grand Prix in pictures

2012 Korean Grand Prix

The image above perfectly captures the life of Mark Webber at Red Bull. So close, and yet so far. He’s had his moments of genuine brilliance, but too often he’s been overshadowed by that young punk from Heppenheim. Still, there’s no harm in being eclipsed by a triple world champion*, we suppose.

For more Korean Grand Prix photos make sure you take the jump. Force India’s media portal must have joined its owner in having an arrest warrant placed on it, either that or there’s some technical glitch that means we can’t bring you any of their pics from Yeongam.

*In the process of being confirmed. We expect to have word by 18 November.

Photographers are presented a challenge under the artificial lights at the Singapore Grand Prix. But as you’ll see after the break they’ve done a great job of capturing the colour and excitement from one of the more unique races on the F1 calendar.

Many drivers took a few liberties flying across the Singapore Sling chicane and they’ve been captured for you here. There’s 106 photos in all, we trust you’ll enjoy them.

Also included below is a series of images featuring the winning design from Mark Webber’s Helmet Promo.

2012 Italian Grand Prix in pictures

2012 Italian Grand Prix

Today we bring you over 100 photos from the 2012 Italian Grand Prix, won by Lewis Hamilton. Given the alarming rate at which Sebastian Vettel has chalked up F1 victories—he currently has 22 from 94 starts—it was a bit of a surprise to learn the win in Monza is only Hamilton’s 2oth (from 103 starts).

Still, that’s 20 more than you or I will ever enjoy. Let’s hope you can enjoy these pics, at the very least!

2012 Belgian Grand Prix in pictures

2012 Belgian Grand Prix

We’re back! After a month of no Formula 1 races we bring you over 100 pics from the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix to get you back into the swing of things. It’s a bit of a mixed up gallery this time, though, missing a McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus and Sauber after the first corner shenanigans.

As you’d expect many of the photos feature the famous Eau Rouge corner and we reckon the photographers have done well to find a few new angles this year. It’s an epic stretch of tarmac and like many tracks, until you’ve been there you don’t fully appreciate just how steep the drop down and rise up the hill really is.

We trust you’ll enjoy these pics and the best part is there’s only a short wait for the next update, which we’ll bring after this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
