2013 Monaco Grand Prix in pictures

2013 Monaco Grand Prix

As you can see Nico Rosberg was pretty happy to have won the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. And who can blame him. It’s one thing to win the race for yourself, but to do so 30 years after your old man achieved the same thing is very special. Well done him and well done Keke.

The existence of the Monaco Grand Prix really is an anachronism in the 21st century, but we hope it never goes. Watching the cars fly through turns 13 and 14 is perhaps the best example of the directness of F1 cars we see all year. And the dramatic elevation changes on such a short track, although flattened out on TV screens, also makes for one of the most spectacular circuits all year.

In our latest F1 in pictures gallery we have exactly 100 images from the glitz and glamour enjoyed by all in Monte Carlo.

Toro Rosso to make Renault switch in 2014

2014 Renault Sport F1 V6 engine

Renault has announced Toro Rosso will use their engine and recovery systems when Formula 1 moves to a new 1.6 litre V6 turbo era in 2014.

The move will end Toro Rosso’s seven-year association with Ferrari engines and will bring it into line with its senior Red Bull Racing team.

As well as signing Toro Rosso to a new long-term deal, Renault has extended its contract with Red Bull Racing.

Quotes from the relevant bigwigs can be read after the break.

Ricciardo latest in line for Red Bull hot seat

2013 Bahrain Grand Prix

Despite a disappointing sixteenth place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo has risen to the top of the ‘most likely to replace Mark Webber in 2014’ list.

Speculation has previously suggested Kimi Raikkonen could be the man to replace Webber should he depart the team at the end of this year. However, Ricciardo’s rise up the ranks follows an interview with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko by the APA news agency. “Many drivers want to drive for Red Bull, and we have two very good juniors [at Toro Rosso],” Marko said. “I’m not worried that we will have something other than two top drivers in the end.”

Marko then added that our Daniel is currently the chosen one from the current Toro Rosso pairing. “Ricciardo is currently the better one. Vergne is too impetuous, asking too much of these sensitive tyres in qualifying,” added Dr Helmut.

Marko also poured cold water on the suggestion that the Webber-Vettel relationship is untenable. “They work constructively together, and that’s enough,” he said. “As long as it stays that way, we don’t have to worry. They’ve never been great friends, but they have a working relationship that still works.”

Meanwhile Ricciardo knows he has to add to his career-best seventh place finish in China if he’s to get the Red Bull chocolates. “I know that I need to do more if I want to have a good chance of getting the place at Red Bull,” the 23-year-old Australian said. “I have to show that it wasn’t just a flash in the pan.”

“I see it as an incentive, not a burden. My goal is to get the promotion, and I know that a lot is expected of me. It’s up to me to get the results.”

Vergne says Ricciardo rivalry isn’t enough

2013 Malaysian Grand Prix

Jean-Eric Vergne has told Autosport he has dismissed his intra-team rivalry at Toro Rosso with Daniel Ricciardo, saying he craves bigger challenges.

“People want to make out that there is a big fight,” Vergne said. “I don’t care. I’m here to do my job and get the best result for the team.”

Last year the general form showed that Daniel had the edge during qualifying but Jean-Eric was able to even things up on Sunday, when it matters most. The rookie Frenchman claimed 16 of Toro Rosso’s 26 points in 2012.

From the two-race sample we have to draw on in 2013 it seems that Vergne won’t be waiting around for Daniel. His tenth place in Malaysia is Toro Rosso’s only 2013 world championship point to date.

“[In Australia] I was in front of Daniel after qualifying, but I was really pissed off and sad that I didn’t make it through into Q3,” added Vergne.

“The [intra-team] fight isn’t enough for me; I want better performances.”

Both drivers are under pressure to perform this year and, following the Vettel–Webber team orders saga from Sepang, it seems increasingly likely that there will be an opening at Red Bull Racing for 2014.

If so Red Bull may well cast their eyes wider than their Toro Rosso junior team, but an impressive season in the STR8 for Vergne or Ricciardo certainly won’t harm the chances of either for landing the plum gig at RBR.

2013 Malaysian Grand Prix in pictures

2013 Malaysian Grand Prix

So, the Malaysian Grand Prix, you may have heard about it. It’s a perfect snapshot of how the mainstream media in Australia handles Mark Webber.

Last week the local media tore shreds from Mark after his woeful start, which, funnily enough, ended up not being entirely his fault. Now, the media is lauding him as some sort of saint-in-waiting who has been dealt an unimaginable injustice by that devil in disguise named Sebastian Vettel.

It’s also an excellent example of how quickly the media world can force things to spiral things out of control; we’ll go into a bit that later.

Anyway, enough banter, here’s the pics from Sepang. We hope you like them.

2013 Australian Grand Prix in pictures

2013 Australian Grand Prix

Aww, isn’t that cute, Kimi and his Australian Grand Prix trophy sharing a quiet moment together in front of their adoring fans.

And with that image another pictorial journey in Formula 1 begins. It’s AUSmotive’s third year of compiling F1 pics after each race to share with our readers and so perhaps now is as good a time as any to share a little about how it all works.

The images are all sourced directly from each team, via their media portals. While we wish we had the budget, time and ability to either commission photographers to act on our behalf or attend every race ourselves that’s simply not the case. It’s all done from AUSmotive HQ in Canberra.

As to the image selection, generally, we select six images from each team, three for each driver. So with 11 teams competing in 2013, at a minimum, you’ll see 66 pics in each gallery. Actually, make that 60 images, because Marussia still won’t answer our emails.

In addition to the base selection of images we give the winning driver and his team extra attention with anywhere from 12 to 30-plus photos. That often depends on the team. Pics from Red Bull normally feature heavily, in part due to having an Australian driver on its books, but also because they provide the best gallery each race and make it the easiest to access them. Ferrari is probably next best. But Mercedes, and sometimes McLaren and Lotus, don’t always give us a lot to work with, which some may argue is fair enough.

Ideally, we like to get photos from raceday, and where there’s a good behind the scenes shot we’ll include them too, no matter the team. Getting back to Mercedes, as this article goes live they only had a handful of images from Sunday in Melbourne, although none of them were on-track photos, so all the F1 W04 images you see are from the practice days. Unfortunately, this is typical for Mercedes/Daimler.

So there you go, we hope that helps you understand a bit more what we’re doing with these galleries and if you have any ideas on the type of images you’d like to see, or any other ideas, please let us know. You can think about it while you’re taking in the 105 images waiting for you after the break.

Toro Rosso unveils 2013 F1 car

Toro Rosso STR8

This is the STR8 which was revealed by Toro Rosso overnight. The two young lads Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne are under pressure to perform in 2013 so they’ll be hoping the car will help them achieve their goals.

Again we see the stepped nose has been disguised by revised bodywork and Toro Rosso say as much as 97% of the car is new.

Most judges would agree that Daniel Ricciardo had the better year compared with Jean-Eric Vergne in 2012, and yet Vergne finished higher in the world championship. Both know that there’s a big chance of a seat at Red Bull in 2014, assuming Mark Webber moves on or retires. It will be a fascinating battle in the STR garage this year.

Daniel Ricciardo says he’s ready for the task at hand. “The 2013 version of me is a more confident person and driver, with more self-belief than last year,” he said. “I spent most of the winter Down Under and when I came back into the factory in Faenza, I could feel a very positive atmosphere with everyone excited about the new car. The target for us this year is very simple: to improve on last year.”

Meanwhile, Jean-Eric Vergne is ready to build on his rookie season. “Going into this season is a completely different experience to this time last year, when I had to deal with a lot of unknowns,” he said. “I had to learn the majority of tracks, understand so many details about Formula 1 and adapt to working with the team. This year, I will still be learning – you never stop in Formula 1 – but the basics are there and I will be able to focus on more important aspects of the job.”

Vergne’s final comment is quite interesting too, “I sense a new philosophy within Toro Rosso: I wouldn’t say people are working harder, but maybe they are going in a better direction.”

Not too sure what to read into that comment from JEV, but if one was being mischievous you could draw the conclusion that there was some behind the scenes tension at times last year.

Let’s wait and see what 2013 brings for the junior Red Bull outfit.

The life and times of Adrian Newey

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

No matter how you look at it, Adrian Newey is a legend. He has won F1 championships with three different teams (Williams 1992–94, 1996; McLaren 1998; Red Bull 2010–12) . Prior to his F1 success, Newey had already collected the biggest trophies in the Indycar category too.

To translate that to footballing terms, imagine a manager that has won a total of eight EPL titles with three different clubs, after already winning a pair of championships in another country. That’s a run of enviable success in anyone’s language.

But Newey’s career has also had some incredibly deep lows; the death of Ayrton Senna in the FW16 being the obvious example here.

Racecar Engineering has compiled a snapshot of Newey’s achievements, good and bad, and it’s very much worth reading. Here’s a snippet we liked:

Our story of Adrian Newey’s career does not start with a hiring but instead a request for his immediate departure. As a teenager Newey attended the historic Repton public school (at the same time as Jeremy Clarkson) but was asked to leave after he high-jacked a school concert soundcheck and blew out a stained glass window.
