Robert Kubica wins comeback rally in Italy

Robert Kubica

Former Lotus (nee Renault) F1 driver Robert Kubica returned to the winner’s circle in his competition comeback in Italy on the weekend. Competing in the in the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana rally, it was his first competitive event since he badly injured himself in the Ronde di Andora rally back in February last year.

At the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRC Kubica and co-driver, Giuliano Manfredi, were first on all four stages to win the event by almost one minute. You can see some highlights via YouTube after the break.

The successful comeback run is a great boost to Kubica’s recovery and comes a little over a week since it was reported he tested a Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

BRZ is RAW Subaru

Subaru BRZ

When Subaru Australia announced they would bring the BRZ sports coupé to market we wondered how this would affect their advertising campaigns, which had hitherto drawn heavily on Subaru’s exclusive all-wheel drive product range. Now we know and it seems Subaru would have us believe that rear-wheel drive equals raw.

Overall it’s not a bad effort, although some will question the reliance on WRC footage, given Subaru withdrew from the sport a few years ago now. And we still prefer the ad from Subaru Canada.

Decide for yourself by watching the ad after the break.

Subaru BRZ online sales stumble into top gear

Subaru BRZ

Midday today was the deadline for Subaru’s exclusive online sales of the BRZ sports coupé to commence. Only trouble was, like the real world, the extreme demand for the car throttled supply, or in this case the Subaru website.

For our own purposes we wanted to experiment with the online purchasing arrangement but gave up after about 45 minutes of getting error messages of various kinds. I fired off an email to Subaru Australia spokesman David Rowley for comment and then went to look at the BRZ the old fashioned way, at the local dealer (Capital Subaru, Fyshwick).

Happily for Subaru, I was greeted by a friendly sales assistant only too happy to show me the WR Blue BRZ they had on display. When I mentioned the online dramas the sales assistant confirmed with me that two orders just came through for their dealership.

On return to the office David Rowley had replied, saying: “We experienced a massive spike in the volume of traffic—looks to be working fine at our end now.” That was about 1:15pm eastern time.

A bit later Rowley returned with a quick update informing they had sold 50 BRZs in the first 90 minutes of sales going live. “Went ‘live’ at around 12:45 with first customer starting the process at 12:50 and completed transaction at 1:09,” he confirmed.

Those numbers represent about one quarter of Subaru’s initial allocation.

For the record we’re still finding the website buggy on our Firefox/Mac OS combination and unable to process an order, but as we’re not seriously in the market for a BRZ at this point in time we can let it slide. If you want to try your luck CLICK HERE.

It’s clear that anyone seriously in the market for a Toybaru is going to have to be patient and accept that others will get their car before them and that good things come to those who wait.

Despite the troublesome start we do think this online approach has merit for Subaru’s self-confessed limited supply. The 86–BRZ concept is one we applaud and we wish both Subaru and Toyota well in their efforts to satisfy their customers.

UPDATE: Subaru has confirmed their 2012 BRZ allocation sold out before 4pm this afternoon. You can read their full statement after the break.

As Australia readies itself for the official launch of the Subaru BRZ we thought we’d raid Subaru’s media portals for pictorial content and see what we could come up with. The result is a gallery of some 70 images, all available as wallpaper-friendly 2000px super images.

There’s details from all angles and also a suite of photos showing all seven colours: WR Blue Mica (exclusive to Subaru), Galaxy Blue Silica, Lightning Red, Crystal Black Silica, Dark Gray Metallic, Sterling Silver Metallic and Satin White Pearl.

Statement from Subaru Australia regarding exclusive online sales of BRZ

Subaru BRZ

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia explains the reasons behind the online only sales approach for the BRZ: “We knew that we wouldn’t have sufficient BRZs to supply our entire network immediately following the launch.

“The online approach allows us to place demonstrator BRZs with selected dealerships, from which customers can arrange test drives via subaru.com.au and also select their preferred delivering dealer.

“Where required, there is an online option to arrange a trade-in valuation and there is also a handy finance calculator.”

The online order book opens at 12 noon (AEST) on Monday 16 July.

This is a novel approach from Subaru and there may be some teething problems from a logistics point of view, especially regarding trade-ins. However, there’s probably also good reason to have national headquarters controlling the ordering during what is sure to be unprecedented demand.

Subaru BRZ – Australian pricing & specs

Subaru BRZ

Subaru Australia has ended the speculation and gone early with full pricing and specification details for its BRZ sport coupé. There is a lot of information provided too, and rather than try and summarise it here for you we’re going to let you rip right into it yourself.

Before we do, as we revealed on Wednesday, the BRZ will be offered in one base specifcation and is priced as follows:

  • BRZ 6-speed manual – $37,150
  • BRZ 6-speed auto – $39,730

Those prices are described as “National Driveaway”, see below for further explanation. For that you get your hands on one of the world’s most sought after coupés and three years of servicing included.

One thing is clear, the BRZ is priced well against the Toyota 86, which is offered locally in two model specifications. Let the Toybaru battle begin!

Due to limited availability for the remainder of this year, the BRZ will be available for sale online only (with exception to those who have already paid deposits, we expect). You’ll need to point your web browsers to the Subaru website on Monday 16 July at 12 noon to join the queue.

We’ll have more regarding the online sales later, for now get ready to read more about the BRZ than you could ever hope to imagine!

Subaru BRZ awarded 5-star ANCAP rating

Subaru BRZ

Just days ahead of its official Australian launch the Subaru BRZ has been awarded a five star safety rating by local authority ANCAP.

The BRZ scored a very respectable 34.4 points, from a possible 37, and the summary of ANCAP’s report states:

The BRZ scored 14.97 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well. There was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the passenger and a slight risk of serious leg injury for the driver and passenger. The vehicle scored 15.43 out of 16 in the side impact crash test. There was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver.

Other vehicles to receive a maximum rating in the latest round of testing include the Holden Colorado and Hyundai i30. You can see video of the BRZ’s test after the break along with ANCAP’s official release. Use the source link below to access a copy of the full report on the BRZ assessment.

Subaru BRZ brochure previews Australian spec

Subaru BRZ

A hastily scanned dealer brochure gives Australian readers their first look at the local specification for the new Subaru BRZ. As we revealed last night you can expect driveaway pricing for a manual BRZ with no options to be a touch over $37,000, depending on your state.

Thanks to the brochure posted to gt86.com.au we can see some of the standard equipment for the BRZ includes:

  • xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights
  • TCS limited slip device (mechanical or electronic?)
  • 17″ alloys
  • dual zone climate control
  • cruise control
  • Bluetooth

The short list of items available as factory-fitted options are:

  • automatic transmission (with steering wheel mounted shift paddles)
  • leather/alcantara seats
  • heated seats

Oddly, we think, satellite navigation and rear parking sensors are listed as accessories. In the Australian prepared brochure they’re placed alongside cosmetic items such as a rear spoiler, an alternate rear diffuser and the like.

The BRZ will be available in seven exterior colours (shown below), including the WR Blue Mica you see above, which is labelled as “Subaru exclusive”.

Some reports also suggest the BRZ is available to order by the internet only. We can’t confirm if that is correct, and it would seem a unique way of selling what a product sure to have high demand.

We also hear the BRZ may come with three years free servicing (to be confirmed).

Subaru Australia prices BRZ sub-$38K driveaway

Subaru BRZ

Subaru Australia will sell the BRZ for less than $38,000 when local pricing is officially announced next Monday (16 July). Unlike its Toybaru cousin which is offered in two trim levels, the BRZ will be offered in Australia as a single model line with relatively high levels of standard equipment.

An AUSmotive reader was today told the driveaway price for a 6-speed manual BRZ would be $37,150 (may vary depending on your state’s taxes etc). That would make list pricing somewhere in the mid $30K range.

While the BRZ is expected to be high-spec compared to the Toyota 86, there will still be options available. Expect the auto gearbox to be close to the $2500 Toyota charges and, one from left field, heated leather/alcantara seats to be $1500.

Toyota Australia is enjoying strong demand with its very well priced 86 offering and expects to shift some 250 models per month. But don’t start thinking the arrival of the BRZ, now in Australian showrooms, will do much to boost supply. Speaking to Carsguide last month Subaru Australia boss, Nick Senior, revealed they have limited the BRZ to around 30 units per month for the first six months.

“We are going to be very constrained in terms of supply. We’re likely to get 201 cars for the first six months,” Senior said. “We had an order bank, but we got to the stage that we had to say we couldn’t take any more orders.”

We’ll bring you the official word from Subaru as soon as it comes to hand.

[Pic: gt86.com.au | Thanks to Jimmy for the tip]

UPDATE 12 July: We’ve been doing a bit more digging today and have found conflicting information on the pricing shown above. First we came across some info that indicated the pricing we listed may be list figures only, not including on roads. Soon after we found something else which supported the pricing we received last night. Looks like we won’t know for certain until next Monday.

Subaru BRZ is a real scorcher

Subaru BRZ

The Australian launch of the Subaru BRZ is not too far away. We wonder if Subaru Australia’s marketing team can top this TVC made by Tribal DDB for their Canadian counterparts.

New vehicle sales report – May 2012

FCAI banner

Last month Australians set a new vehicle sales record for the month of May. A total of 96,069 vehicles were sold, representing a very healthy increase of over 24% (18,668 vehicles) compared to May 2011.

Year-to-date numbers are up almost 9% on 2011 numbers, with a total of 435,288 sales in the first five months of 2012.

Toyota, as usual, claims the major monthly honours of top selling manufacturer (20,443) and highest selling individual model with the HiLux (4,626). Holden (9,017) and Mazda (8,346) fall in behind Toyota on the sales charts.

With such a bumper month it’s no surprise to see so many manufacturers releasing brag sheets. You can read them all after the break.
