Williams F1 reunites with Renault

Williams-Renault engine deal

Williams F1 has reignited memories of its glory days by signing a new engine deal with Renault for the 2102 and 2013 seasons. The deal is being described as ‘long-term’ and both parties expect the relationship will continue into 2014 and beyond, following the switch to turbocharged V6 engines.

During the last Williams F1 deal with Renault Sport F1 (1989–1997) the partnership returned 63 race wins, four word drivers’ titles, five constructors titles.

Speaking at the announcement Sir Frank Williams said, “Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams’ history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past. We must look to the future and continue to re-build our on-track reputation, which I am hopeful that today’s announcement will help us to do.”

The full statement from Williams F1 can be read after the break, including a Q&A interview with Adam Parr, Chairman.

2011 European Grand Prix

Perhaps the most exciting stat to emerge from the 2011 European Grand Prix is that all 24 starters finished the race. That’s only the fourth time in history this has happened. Indeed, Narain Karthikeyan has his name etched into the record books for being the first ever F1 driver to finish 24th. To help relive this rare occurrence here’s 88 pics, featuring all 24 cars, for you to enjoy.

2011 Canadian Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Canadian GP

As promised here is the very wet photo gallery from the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. The amount of water shown in some of the pics is amazing; it really must have been treacherous.

Despite his final lap cock-up Sebastian Vettel’s tally of 161 points gives him a 60 point lead in the drivers’ title race, ahead of Jenson Button (101pts) and Mark Webber (94pts). Red Bull is well on the way to another constructors’ title, holding a 69 point lead over McLaren.

2011 Monaco Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Monaco Grand Prix

We figured you have probably seen enough of Sebastian Vettel on the victory dais, so we’ve given the Red Bull Racing images a miss from Monaco. Actually, that’s not true, it looks like the Red Bull media site is having a few technical issues so, for now, we’re missing photos from them and Toro Rosso. It’s shame, because, as usual, there’s some great pics in there. Hopefully we’ll have them for you shortly.

In the meantime, there’s another 62 pics from the Monaco Grand Prix for you after the break. We’d love to hear which one is you think is best. So take your time, have a good look and leave your comment below.

UPDATE 1 June: New pics from RBR and STR have now been added.

Daniel Ricciardo wins in Monaco

Daniel Ricciardo

Australia’s next F1 driver in waiting Daniel Ricciardo has capped off a dominant weekend at Monaco by claiming victory in the Formula 3.5 Series event.

The 21-year-old Western Australian was never headed in any of the practice sessions and started the race from pole position. Ricciardo then led the race from start to finish and enjoyed his second win at Monaco in front of the F1 crowds.

Speaking after the race Ricciardo said, “I was maybe a little bit more relaxed this time, maybe because it was my second time starting from pole in Monaco. The race didn’t feel as long this year either, I was able to enjoy it a little bit more, even though it was fairly close right up until the end. The car felt good; I felt as though I had good pace and I wasn’t that bothered by the safety cars and I controlled the restarts well.

“It’s been a perfect weekend for me. To have the opportunity in the F1 car on Thursday was amazing. To finish the weekend off with a win is just incredible. It will be a weekend that’s stays with me for a long time!”

2011 Spanish Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Spanish Grand Prix

Despite being teased by our own Mark Webber when he scored pole position, the Spanish GP ended up being yet another Sebastian Vettel victory. That’s four from five races for the 2010 champ and history suggests that impressive start is already enough to put Vettel at almost unbackable odds to make it a second world crown.

As usual there’s some great pics from the latest race and there’s a couple of shots where you can see how dramatic the marbles are with the new Pirelli tyres.

We’re already in another Grand Prix week with the classic Monaco GP just a few days away. Can Mark match his unstoppable performance from 2010, or is he fast becoming a broken man with shattered confidence?

Robert Kubica likely to miss entire F1 season

Robert Kubica

When we last spoke about Robert Kubica we had the positive news that he had been released from hospital and his recovery was going well. That said, it’s probably no surprise to learn Kubica is not expected to race in Formula One this year.

Speaking to Spanish media at last weekend’s Grand Prix, Gerard Lopez, Renault F1 chief, said, “We will probably manage for (Kubica) to do a Friday session at some point in the year but for sure his return this season will not be possible.”

Lopez continued by suggesting Kubica’s future return to F1 is no certainty, “Robert has survived an impressive accident and now he has to do the hardest thing, to recover fully, which is something that nobody knows whether he will succeed. Not him, nor the doctors, nor us.”

Whatever the case may be, we wish Kubica the best for his recovery and hope to see him in a Formula One car as soon as possible.

Daniel Ricciardo wins at Monza

Daniel Ricciardo

Aussie charge Daniel Ricciardo has so far been impressing during his Friday testing role with Toro Rosso. On the weekend he also earned favour by winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Series race at Monza, Italy.

Ricciardo actually crossed the finish line in second place, but French driver Jean-Eric Vergne was handed a 10 second penalty for cutting a chicane while defending a move from the young West Australian.

After the race Ricciardo explained, “The race was hectic, especially at the start. After that it was a bit frustrating because I never had a clear opportunity to get past. I knew that Jean-Eric was penalised, but if I’d had an opportunity to overtake him before the chequered flag, I’d have taken it.”

Let’s hope we’re soon seeing Daniel Ricciardo on F1 racetracks on Sundays in the very near future. Next year, would be great!

2011 Turkish Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Turkish GP

A little later than usual, here’s your hit of Formula One images from the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix. It was a walk in Istanbul Park for Sebastian Vettel. It was also the origin for the latest, and to date, most fervent, rumours suggesting Michael Schumacher will retire at the end of this season. He is contracted with Mercedes GP until the end of next season. We’ll keep an eye on that one and see how it progresses.

For now, sit back and enjoy 82 of the best images from Turkey. The pics of Nico Rosberg in pit lane illustrating the seating position of an F1 driver is quite interesting.

Bruno Senna’s day out

Bruno Senna

Last weekend there was a World Series by Renault event held at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. A perfect excuse, really, for Lotus Renault GP reserve driver Bruno Senna to get out on track in his F1 car between racing action to lay some rubber and entertain the crowd.

The kick here is that young Bruno recorded his antics on his mobile phone while out on track. The YouTube description even includes this delightful disclaimer, “Video made with my phone camera during the demo at Spa! Please note I drove within safe limits and not flat-out. Don’t use your phone and drive!!”

After the break you can see the view from inside and outside the car.

Robert Kubica ready for next stage of recovery

Robert Kubica

Great news for Robert Kubica with confirmation he has been released from hospital a few days ahead of schedule. He continues to recover well following his rally accident in February and will now spend a few days at his home in Monaco before heading to Italy to enter the next stage of his rehabilitation.

In a recent interview on the Lotus Renault GP website Kubica shared news of his progress revealing, “The mobility of my hand is limited but this is pretty normal in this kind of situation, because the connected arm muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility. Things are definitely improving day by day.”
