Top Gear Supercar Showdown wallpapers

Top Gear Supercar Showdown

Top Gear has been in touch with AUSmotive to spread the word about their recent Supercar Showdown. To do that they’ve been kind enough to let us share three 1920x1200px wallpapers from the photo shoot.

The showdown is the stuff of fantasy, really, with 10 cars in all, ranging from a relatively humble Volkswagen Golf GTI right through to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Mind, if we could choose, we think we’d take the BMW 1M for daily duties and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 in case we feel a bit naughty.

The location is Stelvio Pass—like we said, it’s the stuff of fantasy—and if you’ve got a lazy £3,718,090 you could buy all those cars and let 6,071bhp of power corrupt you absolutely.

Audi Quattro

It’s been a while since we posted up a Random wallpaper, but we thought this shot of an Audi Quattro rally car was too good to pass up. Note the hint of flame from the car’s exhaust.

The pic came to us via a press release promoting the UK tour of Top Gear Live, which will be held in Birmingham and London next month. A fleet of Group B rally cars will be on show, making us even more envious that we won’t be there.

You know the drill, click the pic to view the image in 2000px sizing and get ready to ‘Fire up the Quattro!’

Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage achieves auction record

Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage

Not content with letting Ferrari have all the headlines at the recent RM Auctions sale in Monaco, this absolutely stunning Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage sold for over €2.4m (AU$3.5m). That’s the highest price achieved for a ‘Birdcage’. And isn’t it just one of the most beautiful machines you have ever seen.

The car’s ‘Birdcage’ nickname came from its innovative trellis construction that weighed just 36kg. The Tipo 61 was fitted with a 2.9 litre four cylinder good for around 186kW (250bhp). While earlier models used a 2.0 litre engine which produced 150kW (200bhp). With a kerb weight of just 600kg this would have gone like a rocket. And that’s exactly what it did winning the Nürburgring 1000km race in 1960 and 1961.

Ferrari Superamerica sold to the highest bidder

Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina

This gorgeous 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina recently sold at auction for a cool €2.8 million. That’s around four million bucks in Australian money. We’re being told the result is well beyond the pre-auction estimate of AU$3.4m, even though in January we were told it could sell for AU$5m.

The sale took place at the RM Auctions ‘Sporting Classics of Monaco’ auction held last weekend In total almost AU$48m in sales were achieved. What financial crisis?

Travis Pastrana: “Hey I think that’ll buff out”

Travis Pastrana NYE practice jump

You will remember Travis Pastrana leaped into the new year by smashing the car jumping record at Pine Street Pier, Long Beach, California. Travis raised the bar to an extraorindary 269 feet (82 metres). However, as you can see from the screen grab above, that wasn’t the only smashing he did in the build up to his massive jump.

Some behind-the-scenes footage was available at the time of Pastrana’s new year’s leap, now, though, a new more detailed clip is available and shows that practice really does make perfect. Well, almost.

MINI 50 Camden

MINI is a company not short on PR prowess, so when a major milestone like a 50th anniversary comes along they’re not going to think twice about exploiting a marketing opportunity. One such opportunity is the MINI 50 Camden special edition. Full details of the car can be viewed at MotoringFile.

Suffice to say the blacked out headlights and White Silver metallic paint colour look fantastic. If ever there was a road car calling out for some custom Martini Racing stripes, this is it!

There’s also a limited edition MINI 50 Mayfair, but the less said about that brown exterior the better!

The MINI 50 Camden is being considered by MINI Australia, but if a decision to bring the car down under has been made MINI company execs remain coy.

So, for now then we’ll have to make do with looking at these pics. Simply click on the images to launch a 2000px super image. If, like me, you reckon this car looks damn good then a new opportunity to enjoy the car will present itself at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show where the MINI 50 Camden will be on display.

Random wallpaper: Aston Martin DBR1

Aston Martin DBR1

Here at AUSmotive we’re pretty chuffed with the news that Aston Martin Racing is chasing outright success at this year’s Le Mans 24 hour race. Not so much because we like Astons, of course we do, but we also appreciate beautifully crafted machines. The inspiration for Aston Martin’s 2009 assault, the DBR1, certainly fits that criteria.

One of the most stunning racing cars of its era it also proved its credentials by powering Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori to victory in the 1959 Le Mans 24 hour race.

You can read more about the DBR1 at Wikipedia, while enjoying a couple of press gallery images (click each image to load 2000 x 1320px super image). Also included after the jump is a brief YouTube clip showing Stirling Moss behind the wheel of a DBR1 and discussing his memories of the car.

Top Gear tea break – MkV Golf GTI redux

With all the talk of the new MkVI Golf GTI, I thought it might be time to remind Volkswagen what the new model has to live up. With thanks, of course, to Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear (Series 5, Episode 6).

Random wallpaper: Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS

Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS at 2007 Classic Adelaide

Isn’t she beautful! This is a rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS which was in Australia last year competing in the Classic Adelaide rally. Based on the 300 SL, the car all AUSmotive staff agree is the most beautiful car in the world, the SLS was brought to Australia from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre in Stuttgart to participate in last year’s rally. Mercedes reckon “its elegant body and powerful six-cylinder engine engage the senses in a way only few cars can”. Pretty hard to argue with that.

Of course, it would be cruel to have given you only one image wouldn’t it…

Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix circuit

To celebrate the Belgian Grand Prix here is a 1920×1200 pixel aerial photo of the awesome Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix circuit. The current track is a fraction over 7km, but the original layout was over 14km in length. The Belgian Grand Prix was first held here in 1924 and the Eau Rouge–Radillon corners—part of the original layout—form one of the most famous sections of Grand Prix track in the world. Rivalled, perhaps, only by the Monaco street circuit. However, it is the Blanchimont corner on the back straight that drivers find the more fearsome corner, according to Wikipedia. More detail on the track can be found on the official Formula 1 website.
