Old skool Land Rover goodness

Land Rover Series I

Land Rover will be celebrating 67 years of production at this year’s Goodwood Revival (11–13 September). To do that they’ll be rocking the show with a display of Series I and Defender models.

Included in the mirth will be ‘The Defender 2,000,000’, which as you might have already guessed, is the 2 millionth Defender to be built. It will be sold at auction with the proceeds going to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Born Free Foundation.

As good as all that is, we just wanted to share with you these 2560px mega images with you because, well, the Landie Series I and Defender are just about the coolest off-road vehicles ever made.

Classic Mini Clubman Estate wallpapers

Mini Clubman Estate

It’s safe to say the release of the new MINI Clubman didn’t exactly capture the attention of the readers. “What a hideous turd,” was the first comment left here on AUSmotive and elsewhere the feedback given freely to MINI wasn’t exactly flattering.

It may surprise a few of you to learn that with the release of images for the 21st century Clubman BMW also handed out these images of a Classic Mini Clubman Estate.

And seeing as we reckon most of you will share our view that this one seriously cool little car we figured we’d share these nine photos with you all.

The Clubman Estate replaced the earlier Traveller and Countryman models and was built from 1969–82 during the British Leyland era of Mini stewardship.

BMW says a total of 197,606 Clubman Estates were built and we thank them for sharing these fantastic pics with us, which you can access in our 2560x1690px mega image sizing by clicking on the pics you like.

McLaren F1 GT wallpapers

McLaren F1 GT

Only three road going McLaren F1 GTs were ever made. This was done to homologate the F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ for racing. The car you see here is chassis #58F1GT and will be on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

We thank McLaren for sharing these images with us and even though the ‘Longtail’ is not the most pleasing aesthetic result this is, after all, still a McLaren F1. That makes us happy and is a perfect way to end the working week.

For more on the McLaren F1 GT take a look at this entry on the McLaren website, which reads in part:

Constructed, like the rest of the bodywork, from carbon fibre, the F1 GT’s tail is clearly its most remarkable feature – but it’s by no means the only modification that was made for the 1997 season. The nose was extended to provide further aerodynamic downforce; the wheel arches were flared over the larger 18-inch alloys; and to top it all off (quite literally), the roof-mounted snorkel was enlarged to feed the 6.1-litre V12 with air. Altogether, the GT is over 600mm (two feet) longer than a standard McLaren F1 road car, as well as being over 100mm (four inches) wider.

1995 McLaren F1 GTR #06R

McLaren F1 GTR

This is the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR, chassis #06R, and it is the inspiration for the livery of the just revealed P1 GTR. Driven by a team of Derek Bell, his son Justin Bell and Andy Wallace car #51 finished third in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.

McLaren gave us these pics as part of the press release for the P1 GTR and we thought the mighty F1 GTR deserved a post all to itself. So here you are, don’t forget to click on each photo to load its 2560px mega image.

Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva

1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva

Alfa Romeo is the gold sponsor for the 2014 Mille Miglia regularity race, which takes place later this week. Under current regulations cars that compete in the modern Mille Miglia must have competed in the original era of the event (1927–1957). Thankfully for our eyes this 1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva did just that.

The 2000 Sportiva is very rare and according to Wikipedia only two roadsters and two coupés were made. It was planned to enter the 2000 Sportiva into full production, but that didn’t eventuate.

All that means is we are left with this image above. What a gorgeous car! You can read a little more about the car from Alfa Romeo after the break.

Random wallpaper: 1966 Jaguar XJ13

1966 Jaguar XJ13 prototype

It’s been a long while since we brought you a random wallpaper, an image we offer up for no other reason than the car in question must be shared with you. So when this image of a 1966 Jaguar XJ13 prototype came our way we knew exactly what we had to do.

Those of you who know your Jags will know the XJ13 was never raced and that the prototype in these pictures is the only one ever made. And if you really know your stuff you’ll know the XJ13 was crashed in the early 1970s and sat in storage for a couple of years before it was rebuilt.

We’ve been a little cheeky and copied and pasted a slab of text from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, accessible via the Wayback Machine, which details the story of this remarkable looking car.

By chance, if you happen to be reading from England you’ve got a chance to see the XJ13 in action at the 2013 Kop Hill Climb which is on this weekend.

Sauber F1.08 cutaway wallpapers

Sauber F1.08 cutaway

Back in May we saw the awesome video from the Sauber F1 Team showing their F1.08 cut in half. Chief designer, Matt Morris, was on hand to guide us through the maze and at the time we declared it the “coolest behind the scenes F1 video you will see all year.” Nothing we’ve seen since has changed our view.

Now, we must thank the Sauber F1 Team again for making wallpaper-friendly still images of the F1.08 cutaway available. In all we have 14 photos for you, all available as 2000px super images. In case you missed it the first time we’ve added the video after the break as well.

Before you go, here’s a few words from Sauber about the project and the F1.08:

When mechanics at the Sauber F1 Team set about slicing a Formula One car down the centre line, they were embarking on a labour of love. The idea – hatched in late 2009 – was the brainchild of Sergio Bonagura, a former car chief for the race team. Mechanics at the Sauber factory created the exhibit over a period of two years, investing a fair amount of their downtime and demonstrating the precision of true craftsmen and impressive attention to detail in the process. Since this was not something anyone had done before, the team had no template to follow. And yet, come spring 2012, the model was complete and the cameras were ready to roll.

The car in question is a BMW Sauber F1.08. The 2008 season was the most successful yet for Sauber. At the Canadian Grand Prix that year Sauber celebrated its first, and so far only, F1 victory, Robert Kubica taking the win and Nick Heidfeld following him across the line to wrap up a one-two finish. In total the F1.08 recorded 11 podiums, one pole position (Kubica in Bahrain) and two fastest race laps (Heidfeld in Malaysia and Germany).

Even an E64 BMW M6 looks better on nice rims

BMW M6 on 21 inch D2 Forged CV11 Deep Concave wheels

The E64 BMW M6, in our eyes it’s one of BMW’s greatest cock-ups. A glorious V10 engine wrapped up in styling you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. But, as these pics show, there’s nothing a lowered ride and choice rims can’t fix.

D2FORGED are responsible for the wheels, they’re 21″ CV11 Deep Concave running a staggered set up, with 9″ width up front and 10.5″ wide at the rears. The slender spokes, all 11 of them, are set-off nicely by the colour coded Interlagos Blue stripe on the lip.

There’s a few more pics after the break and simply click on each photo to be rewarded with 1600px sizing.

Vintage automotive typography

Vintage vehicle typography

For us, the beauty and style of vintage vehicle logotypes is as worthy of admiration as the cars themselves. So we thank AUSmotive reader Michael for sending in this link to a collection of 1950s automotive typography captured from a car fair in Minnesota, USA.

There’s over 80 images in all, so if this is your thing we suggest you click the link below to get your typographic fix.

After we checked the images for ourselves it encouraged us to raid our photo collection to come up with 15 of our favourite pieces of automotive type. You can see them after the break.

BMW 750Li rolling on 22″ three-piece wheels

BMW 750Li with 22" D2FORGED FMS-09 wheels

The friendly folk from D2FORGED have been in touch to share with us some wallpapers of a BMW 750Li rolling on some pretty damn nice 22″ FMS-09 wheels. The wheels are three-piece and feature brushed aluminium centres with polished chrome lips.

There’s nine more pics after the break and all you need to do to get your 1920x1280px versions is to click on each image as you go.

UPDATE: Our mistake, these wheels are three-piece, not two-piece as first stated.
