2010 Porsche 911 Turbo S

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo S

Not content with the 368kW on offer from the regular Porsche 911 Turbo, but you still want that Turbo badge? Then you’d better call your favourite Porsche dealer and give them a pat on the back because news of a new 911 Turbo S has been officially announced.

Starting with the same 3.8-litre flat six found in the Turbo, the engineers from Zuffenhausen have found that extra 22kW that Franz lost during production. That means you will now have 390kW in total, or 530bhp in the old money. That’s quite a lot, really. So too is the maximum torque figure of 700Nm.

The 911 Turbo S is available only with a 7-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. Now you know why they use “PDK” for short. If you’re still lost, this is the Porsche version of the transmission du jour—the double clutch gearbox.

You’ll be able to feast your eyes on the 911 Turbo S at the Geneva Motor Show next month and European deliveries are scheduled for May 2010.

Now the big question, can I really make do with just one liver kidney?

60 years of philosophy continued

Porsche - 60 years TVC

Another Porsche ad. This time there’s no valet parking. And there’s no family tree. This time it’s, well, to quote AUSmotive reader ‘KGB’, “It’s all turd polish for the Panamera. Good though…”

As well as seeing the ad after the jump, I’ve selected a few of my favourite stills from the clip. Which ones would you have chosen?

Turbo teaser

Porsche 911 Turbo

Porsche have recently released this video teaser of their 2010 911 Turbo. You may recall the new 997.2 Turbo has a stonking 500 horsepower courtesy of its 3.8 litre flat six. But if you want to see a couple of 911s tearing up some tarmac, as well as graphic representations of how VTG, PTV and Dynamic Engine Mounts work, then you’ll need to watch the clip. If said clip doesn’t leave you wanting to go and drive your favourite twisty roads then nothing will.

Walter Rohrl loves his 911 GT3

Walter Rohrl loves his 911 GT3

Motorsport legend Walter Röhrl loves his new Porsche 911 GT3 so much he made this little video of himself with his car. He took his beloved GT3 to the Autodromo del Levante, in Italy’s south-east, for some one on one time. (It’s a nice looking track, actually.) Walter even got dressed for the occasion in full race attire.

But, then, he is in regular casual clothes staring out to sea, wondering if he and his GT3 will live happily ever after. I see, the GT3 can be used for road AND track. Road and track. Road and track. I think the clip gets this message across. Make the jump below and see for yourself.

Magical museum tour

Porsche Museum

Doing the “German Car Museum Tour” is on the “to do” list of most petrol heads. In relatively close proximity you have Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. While, further north, in Wolfsburg is the superb Autostadt, Volkswagen’s celebration of itself and its multiple brands.

Stephen Williams from the New York Times is one guy lucky enough to have experienced this magical museum tour of late. He wasn’t able to fit in the Autostadt as well, but crossing the others off the list is a delight most would like to experience.

Here is a teaser of Williams’ findings, you can read his full article following the link below, “Devoting a day, give or take, to each museum and the accompanying attractions—usually a gift shop, bistro or cafe, and a delivery center for people who pick up their new toys at the factory—I came away with different impressions. ‘Cars are cars, all over the world,’ Paul Simon sang. But they’re not—and neither are car museums.”

Porsche GT3 R makes debut

2010 Porsche 911 GT3 R

Fancy the odd track day? Got a lazy $500K burning a hole in your pocket? Reckon you could show that old man Michael Schumacher a thing or two? Then Porsche have the right car for you. It’s the 911 GT3 R and it made its worldwide debut yesterday.

In exchange for your half million dollars and a few pleasantries Porsche will hand you a 1200kg dedicated racing machine all ready to take part in your local FIA GT3 racing series. You also get 480bhp from your 4.0 litre flat six and lots of buttons to push on your alcantara covered steering wheel. Nice!

Such a pedigree racer like this deserves a famous racetrack location for a debut don’t you think? Silvertsone? Nah, a bit flat—good, but not really worthy. Spa? Yeah, not a bad suggestion, It is one of the world’s most respected tracks after all. But I’m not sure it ticks all the right boxes. The Nürburgring? Yes, perfect. It scores points for being in Germany, of course, but you’re also likely to see one or two taking part in the what has to be the world’s best 24-hour race. Forget Le Mans, that’s rubbish, the Nürburgring 24 hour race is where your balls are really tested. Just imagine circling the famous Nordschleife in the wee hours of the morning, in driving rain, with 200,000 mind altered Germans cheering you on—sounds like a barrel of laughs!

Sorry, I digress, the location for the worldwide debut of the Porsche 911 GT3 R, then? A big shed in middle England. Well the Autosport International show in Birmingham to be precise. Doesn’t really seem fitting, does it.

Loads more after the break, although, sadly, Porsche PR are pretty light on with pictures of this purebred racer.

A big luxurious taxi

Porsche Panamera Turbo - video review

That headline sounds less than flattering, but if you watch Vicki Butler-Henderson’s Fifth Gear Web TV review of the Porsche Panamera Turbo you will see she loves the thing.

I’m still not convinced of the Panamera’s styling, outside or inside, but, apparently the sensation from the driving position is a very good one. Ultimately, that’s all that matters. And with a six month waiting list for the Turbo taxi it looks like Porsche have given the market what it wants.

Enjoy the clip after the jump.

Roots in racing. Not posing.

Porsche TVC

Porsche are not new to creating outstanding advertising for their cars. The Panamera family tree TVC from last year is proof of that. Now, they’ve released another top shelf piece promoting their history in racing. Take the jump and see this awesome ad for yourself.

Walter Röhrl returns to Nürburgring 24 hour race

Walter Rohrl

Porsche test driver, dual world rally champion and all round motor racing legend Walter Rohrl will be driving a Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the 2010 Nürburgring 24 hour race. Rohrl will be 63 when the race takes place in May and it will be his first N24 since 1993.

There’s not much else around announcing this drive at the moment other than the following quote from Rohrl himself, “No other road-going 911 has ever been as close to a race car as this current GT3 RS,” said Rohrl. “That’s why I’m thrilled to be able to prove that this sports car is up to the challenge of the 24-hour race.”

Rohrl will have 118bhp per litre at his disposal from the 3.8 litre flat six engine. That’s around 450bhp (335kW), which won’t grab too many headlines for outright power, but it’s safe to say the GT3 RS will handle itself very well around the demanding Nordschleife circuit.

As usual AUSringers.com is planning to cover the race as best as can possibly be done from the other side of the globe!

Porsche Panamera draws praise

Porsche Panamera Turbo

The Porsche Panamera has polarised opinions from the moment it was announced. It’s bad enough that Porsche are making a four door saloon, some say, but, that it looks like that—well, that’s just the icing on the cake.

Trouble is, the big behemoth actually seems to be good. Very good, in fact. Reviewers from all over are singing the praises of the Panamera. Now, it has won a Car of the Year award, from Bloomberg, of all places.

It is their first year handing out such gongs, so perhaps they’re still finding their feet. Although, they did have this to say about the Panamera, “It drives wonderfully, has the best interior ever done by Porsche, and the rear seats are hugely accommodating and magically comfortable.

“The Turbo is the top of the line, but the (nominally) less-expensive S model with 400 hp handles and revs the most organically and is my personal pick. A perfect car for a Master of the Universe.”

So there you have it. The podgy Panamera might be another to prove that you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Castle Combe capers – GT-R v 911 Turbo v R8 V10

Autocar - GT-R v 911 Turbo v R8 V10

The Nissan GT-R, the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Audi R8 V10. Immensely capable and devastatingly quick cars, all. But does the quickest track car make the best road car? Do flappy paddle gearboxes still incur the wrath of reviewers like they once did? Does price matter?

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar has been kind enough to take these three weapons to the 3km Castle Combe to find out. You can watch the clip after the jump.

Volkswagen confirms half stake in Porsche

Volkswagen-Porsche merger

Towards the end of October Volkswagen announced it intended to finalise a 49.9% stake in Porsche by year’s end. This deal was confirmed overnight and Volkswagen are licking their lips at the thought of controlling the world’s most profitable car maker.

A full statement from Volkswagen AG can be read below, but here’s a small teaser, “The combination of the two companies follows a compelling strategic, industrial and financial logic.”

The release continues, “With a return on sales of 10.3 percent, Porsche AG is the world’s most profitable automobile manufacturer. Volkswagen will in future participate in this business success through its stake.

“As a result, the annual operating profit of the Volkswagen Group is expected to increase by some €700 million in the long term.”

Show me the money!
