The green shitter

Chris Harris' classic 911

Remember Drivers Republic? That’s when Chris Harris first published this video about his old skool 911. It was a cobbled together masterpiece, constructed by the expert hand of Richard Tuthill.

Harris described this as his perfect sportscar. Even though that comment was made some seven or eight years ago, that’s still some claim.

VIDEO: Porsche 911 Carrera GTS v BMW i8

Porsche 911 GTS v BMW i8

Dan Prosser from Evo magazine presents a very intriguing challenge here by pitting a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS against a BMW i8 on the track.

We’ll let the cat out of the bag early, the i8 couldn’t match the 911 for outright lap times. In fact, it’s not even close. But can the i8 match the 911 for laughs and entertainment? Beyond that, is the i8 a serious dynamic competitor for the 911?

You’ll have to watch the video to find out.

Germany, here I come!

Porsche Museum

AUSmotive is about to go into a hiatus of some sort while I head on an overseas holiday for the next five weeks or so. I’ll be flying to Germany later this week and the items on my magical museum tour, in itinerary order, include:

If I get a chance I may post some updates while I’m away, but I can’t be sure if the time or urge will come my way. I return to Australia in early May and I’m going to have an awesome time experiencing some very cool automotive content.

With regards to updates you may best to keep an eye out on Facebook and Twitter.

Have you heard of Arthur Schening?

Porsche 911 S by Arthur Schening

Arthur Schening is a graphic designer, so we already know he is a cool guy. All designers are cool, aren’t we? Anyway, Schening ups the cool factor by some margin by creating these stylish illustrations of some very cool historic racing cars.

Thanks to Ferdinand Magazine for bringing these wonderful artworks to our attention and thanks to PayPal for the transaction I’m about to make.

Yep, that’s right, you can buy prints from Schening, and these three selected samples are just the tip of his automotive iceberg. Visit the Schening Creative website to see his full portfolio.

Put up your hand if you’d like a Cayman GT4 RS

Porsche Cayman GT4

If you don’t love the Cayman GT4 you bloody well should. And if you love the Cayman GT4 then you sure as hell will get hot under the collar at talk of a GT4 RS model.

“This is just the beginning of the era,” Andreas Preuninger, Godfather of the Porsche GT program told Evo. “I would be interested in doing a Cayman GT4 RS version, but at the moment we didn’t even talk about such a thing. If the customers call for something like this we could think about it.

“We underestimated the success of the Cayman GT4, which shows that we were right with the concept. In England, within three days two years of cars were sold. It happened in Sweden, it happened in Germany…everywhere.”

Well, Andreas, who wouldn’t want a Cayman GT4 RS … make it happen brother!

Pail Bailey's dream hypercar fleet

Meet Paul Bailey. He’s from the UK and owns a McLaren P1, a LaFerrari and a Porsche 918 Spyder. What a bastard!

In this video Bailey drives his P1 to pick up his new LaFerrari. Not content with taking delivery of one car for the day he shoots straight off to Porsche to collect his 918. Nice work if you can get it!

We’re treated to some of his thoughts on all three cars. This is not a balls out performance comparison that’s going to get him banned by over protective car makers (yet), but it’s still a worthwhile insight into the three best and most desirable hypercars of the moment.

2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS revealed

2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Here is the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It’s the most extreme factory road-going 911 you can buy. It’s powered by a 368kW/480Nm 4.0 litre flat-six and has, audible groan, a 7-speed PDK transmission.

Porsche say it can lap the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 20 seconds, comfortably quicker than the V10 Carerra GT. More usefully, the GT3 RS can reach 100km/h in 3.3 seconds and 200km/h in just 10.9 seconds. Its top speed is 310km/h.

Featuring model specific body panels the sculpted roof on the RS is made from magnesium. The rear decklid and bonnet are made from carbon fibre. It’s not much, but these changes save 10kg compared with the regular 911 GT3. Unladen weight for the new RS is 1420kg.

Those hungry rear intakes look familiar because we’ve seen them on the 911 Turbo. While the GT3 RS boasts more aggressive front and rear spoilers to aid aerodynamics.

You can order a 911 GT3 RS from your local Australian Porsche Centre right now and the man in the tie will expect you to part with $387,700. You’ll be able to collect your new toy in the third quarter of 2015.

More photos and information await below, including full specifications.

“We race because it’s our tradition”

Porsche 917

Porsche has won Le Mans a record 16 times. It’s return to the LMP1 category in 2014 brought with it a wave of nostalgia. Xcar ran with that and made this 25 minute video which they have declared is “the definitive history” of Porsche at Le Mans.
