Porsche confirms Leipzig plant for Cajun

2010 Porsche Cayenne

Porsche has issued a press statement confirming its new SUV, the Cajun, will be built at their Leipzig factory. The plant first came to life in 2002 building the Cayenne. In 2009, following improvements to the facility, the Panamera was added to its roster.

A minimum of 1000 jobs are expected to be created by Porsche with the introduction of the Cajun. Upgrading of the Leipzig plant in anticipation of the “efficient and agile” SUV will commence later this year.

“During the production of the Cayenne and the Panamera, our Leipzig plant has impressively proved that it can produce premium vehicles of highest quality,” said Matthias Müller, chairman of the Porsche AG board of management. “The decision in favour of this location is proof of our trust in the skills and qualifications of our Leipzig associates, and at the same time another contribution to the economic advancement of the region.”

VW teases Alfa with promise of Porsche engines

Volkswagen-Alfa Romeo-Fiat

The simmering saga of Volkswagen chasing Alfa Romeo skirt continues with the German giant dangling a big Porsche carrot in front of Alfa Romeo. That carrot takes the form of a rumoured plan for future Volkswagen-owned Alfa Romeos to use Porsche engines.

Although, Alfa’s current owners, Fiat, are still playing hard to get and are clearly not amused with Volkswagen’s latest flirting, telling Autocar, “We shut the door in their faces and now they’re trying to get in the window.”

In reply, VW boss Ferdinand Piech says, “Volkswagen has time.”

New Porsche 911 Turbo spied

Porsche 911 Turbo prototype

US-based website Kilometer Magazine brings us some excellent spy shots of what appears to be the next-gen Porsche 911 Turbo. Earlier 911 test mules have been adorned with Turbo-style side intake stickers—they can’t fool us, the intakes on this prototype are the real deal.

The front end looks similar to the previous 911 Turbo and continues the evolutionary approach so expected from Porsche. At the back it appears Porsche could be offering the new Turbo with a retractable style spolier. Either that, or they’re just leaving the usual Turbo spoiler off to mess with us during the development phase.

Walter Röhrl drives the legendary Porsche 904

Porsche 904

Walter Röhrl, Porsche luminary and Targa Tasmania competitor, has taken to the track in a beautifully restored 904 GTS. The car is part of the excellent rolling Porsche Museum which makes sure its car go as well as they show.

With Röhrl at the wheel, the sleek coupé still has the ability to powerslide through corners, all while looking as stunning today as it did when it made its racing debut back in 1963.

Enjoy the footage after the break. Oh, we’re disappointed the Autoblog footage of Walter spinning the 904 didn’t make the final edit.

Porsche shows love for “The Beast”

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Porsche has just commenced deliveries of the awesome 911 GT2 RS to its North American customers. There were 20 cars waiting for their owners at the El Toro airfield in California. That’s a combined total of 12,400hp, or around 9,300kW.

They’re some pretty big numbers, which sit well alongside the 80,000 engineering hours and almost 700,000kms of testing undertaken by Porsche during the development of “The Beast”, their most powerful road car to date.

Andreas Preuninger, High Performance Cars manager, was on hand to file this video interview. It’s compelling viewing, too, not because of the driving footage displayed, but more for what he says.

Perhaps there is now only one thing left for Porsche to do with the GT2 RS; release video footage of their claimed 7:18 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time set by Walter Röhrl.

Autocar names top five road tests

Steve Sutcliffe, Autocar

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar presents the top five cars from a database of 5000 road tests (video available after the break). On the list they have included an original 1959 Mini, a 1961 Jaguar E Type, a 1981 Golf GTI, a 1994 McLaren F1 and a 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

In the first recap, featuring the Mini, it’s interesting when Sutcliffe includes a couple of lines from the 1959 test; a shame, really, he didn’t do that for the other four cars.

Overall, it seems like a reasonable enough list, if a bit skewed towards British engineering. But, Autocar is a British mag after all. So, what would cars would you put in your top five?

Rally legend Walter Röhrl to compete in 2011 Targa Tasmania

Walter Rohrl

Exciting news for Australian motorsport fans with the announcement that rally legend and Porsche icon Walter Röhrl will be competing in Targa Tasmania this year. Röhrl has raced in Targa Tasmania twice before, 1997 and 2000, and will be reunited with a 30-year-old rally car in Tasmania for 2011.

Back in 1981 Röhrl and co-driver Christian Geistdoerfer raced a Porsche 911 SC at the San Remo Rally. It was the era dominated by the fearsome Audi Quattros and Röhrl almost won the race, in what is considered to be one of his greatest drives ever. It was the only time he raced the 911 SC and the very same car has been located, restored and will be in Australia competing under the Porsche rolling museum initiative. Geistdoerfer will complete the fairytale by re-uniting with Röhrl in the navigator’s seat.

Reminiscing about the 1981 San Remo Rally, Röhrl siad, “That rally is one of the most memorable for me, for sure. We were not supposed to be competitive in the San Remo because the stages were very difficult and the all-wheel drive Audi had much better grip and more power than our 911 SC.

“But we pushed and pushed and pushed … and finally something broke on the car on the final tarmac stages when I thought we were going to win the rally.”

“It’s a bit naughty!”

You may have already heard that Mark Webber bought himself a Porsche GT2 RS late last year. He’s just one of the lucky 500 to get their hands on the limited-run 620hp supercar. However, always willing to share the love, Webber has teamed up with Porsche UK to offer a few joy rides to a handful of competition winners. Here’s the video; enjoy the ride!

Porsche announces Panamera S Hybrid

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

It’s barely been a day since Porsche told us they would be premiering a new hybrid model at the Geneva Motor Show. So eager is the Stuttgart company to tell the world about their new green machine they have let the cat out of the bag already and revealed information about the Panamera S Hybrid.

The big saloon has a total of 279kW and can reach 100km/h in six seconds flat. The top speed of 270km/h isn;t too shabby, either. But this is a hybrid, right, so what are its green credentials like?

Well, the combined fuel consumption rating is 6.8l/100km and CO2 emissions are rated at a low 159g/km. However, the range available in full electric mode is a comical two kilometres. Count them; one, two.

Power is provided by a boosted 3.0 litre V6 offering 245kW, while the electric motor gives a further 34kW. The sparky motor is not really on an equal footing with the petrol engine is it. But, it’s a start and Porsche is to be commended for the effort.

There’s more after the break and keep an eye on www.porsche.com/geneva for launch details.

Will the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 be mid-engine?

2010 Porsche 911 GT3

The Rennlist forum is a great knowledge-base for all things Porsche. It can also be a great source for some accurate inside info. We can’t vouch for the accuracy of the following info, but if correct it appears the next Porsche 911 GT3 could change the game somewhat, insofar as the pure GT3 template is concerned.

Here’s a list of expected features of the 991 GT3 as posted by “rosenbergendo”, a current GT3 owner who claims to have secured the info from a senior Porsche motorsport employee at the recent Daytona 24 hour race:

  • 4.0 litre motor with 480hp (45hp more than 3.8 litre in current GT3).
  • Engine to be mounted further forward, improving chassis balance and essentially making this a mid-engine car in everything but name.
  • Double clutch PDK transmission available as an option, to be known as PDK-S.
  • Expected weight loss of 80-90kg over current model.
  • No hybrid technology will be sourced from GT3 R Hybrid.

The PDK and engine placement info will be sure to upset the purest of pure Porsche GT3 nuts. That’s if they have managed to overcome the loss of the GT1-based “Mezger” engine block.

Porsche Boxster S Black Edition

Porsche Boxster S Black Edition

Porsche has discovered once you go black, you can’t go back. Hot on the heels of announcing the 911 Black Edition comes news of the Boxster S Black Edition. This time, though, there is a modest power increase for the Boxster S Black, to go along with the expected black styling adornments.

The Boxster S Black Edition produces 320hp from its 3.4 litre flat six. That’s 10hp more than a Boxster S and the same as a Boxster Spyder. That means you can despatch 100km/h in a reasonably brisk 5.2 seconds and, if you try really hard, you can return an average fuel consumption figure of 9.8l/100km. If you opt for the slick-shift PDK box you can drop 0.1 seconds and 0.4l/100km off those numbers.

Also thrown in for good measure are Sat Nav, plus the “Comfort”, “Infotainment” and “Design” equipment packages. The Boxster S Black Edition will be limited to 987 cars.

More pics and detail after the break.
