Porsche 962 in Melbourne for Motorclassica

Porsche 962

The annual Motorclassica Concours d’Elegance and Classic Motor Show is being held in Melbourne this weekend. In fact the doors open this morning. We gave you a teaser for Motorclassica during our AIMS coverage.

Yesterday this stunning and genuinely classic Porsche 962 arrived in readiness for the show. The 962 dominated sportscar racing in the 1980s, claiming the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1986 and 1987, among many other titles. The Dauer 962 won Le Mans in 1994 as well.

Derek Bell is a five-time winner at Le Mans, his last two victories were at the wheel of the 962. After the break there’s two more photos and a short clip. We like the following text from the description of the video:

“Watched as this classic 962 was unloaded from a tray table truck. Once unloaded, Derek Bell strode over, jumped in, started her up and casually drove into the Royal Exhibition Building.”

2013 Porsche 911 Turbo gets busy

Porsche 911 Turbo prototype

The 991 911 Turbo might well be some time away yet, but we trust you’ll enjoy this video of the mighty Porsche lapping the Nürburgring. The fixed rear wing looks a bit of an after thought. Expect that to be tidied up for the final production model.

After watching this clip we pondered what would constitute a bad day if your job was to test Porsche prototypes around the famed Nordschleife? Now that Porsche is heading towards the might of the Volkswagen mothership, the best we could come up with was being demoted to quattro GmbH test driver duties.

Unfortunately embedding of this clip has been disabled, so you’ll have to head on over to YouTube to watch. When you get about 1:20 into the footage it looks like the Audi RS4 is getting busy again, too.

Next-gen Porsche Boxster revealed in spy pics

2012 Porsche Boxster

An undisguised 981 Porsche Boxster S has recently been photographed in the United States. Wearing German-style number plates we suspect Porsche was shooting and filming promotional material.

A dramatic side intake, inspired by the Carrera GT, is the first thing you notice about the new Boxster. It helps set the car apart from the 911, although the convertible is clearly from the Porsche family.

Other details from our earlier report in June remain. A 360hp 2.5 litre turbocharged flat-four cylinder is tipped to be introduced in 2015. In the meantime the Boxster will rely on familiar six-cylinder power. A 2.7 litre will offer 265hp, while a 3.4 litre for the S version has 315hp. It’s also expected the new car will be 15kg lighter than the model it replaces.

The new Boxster is due for release in 2012. It’s expected the 981 will be officially launched at the Detroit Motor Show in early January. Follow the link below for more pictures.

Porsche 991 911 cabriolet

Last week Car had heaps of Porsche information and one thing to grabbed our attention was the claim the new 991 911 will run for two seven-year model cycles. That will take the basic chassis structure, launched at Frankfurt last month, up until 2025.

With the added support of Volkswagen the pace of model development is increasing at Stuttgart. After the break there’s a summary of what’s in store for the 911 range.

Porsche 911 (991)

Porsche brings us new video of the 991 911 from the Frankfurt Motor Show. This time August Achleitner, Manager of the 911 model line, has his say on why he thinks the new 911 is king.

There’s also a bit of discussion about the 991’s performance at the Nürburgring; it has cut 13 seconds off the best time set in the old 997.

2011 Singapore GP: Take a lap around Marina Bay

Recently we’ve been able to bring you previews of upcoming Grands Prix thanks to McLaren. Ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, though, they’ve given us nothing.

Instead we’ve gone for a new approach with Porsche Carrera Cup driver Yuey Tan’s video. He’s pretty excited about racing in front of his home crowd so this preview adds a nice local touch.

Also available after the break is onboard footage of Mark Webber’s fastest lap from Q3 in 2010.

VIDEO: Porsche’s magnificent seven

2012 Porsche 911 with 7 speed manual

Double-clutch transmissions are fast becoming the norm, even in high-end sportscars. Think Ferrari 458, McLaren MP4-12C and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG to name a few. We’re unlikely to see a manual box in a Lamborghini ever again.

On that count, then, Porsche is to be applauded for sticking with tradition and offering a manual transmission  in its new 911. Moreover, it’s a 7-speed as well.

After the break you can watch a short promo talking us through the basics of the new box. Looks like the seventh gear is for overdrive duties only and has probably been added as much for marketing and fuel consumption reduction as anything. But it’s a manual and therefore we like it. Just stop paying attention when the voiceover man starts talking about the PDK.
