Porsche Boxster interior sees red

Porsche Boxster interior

We’ve already seen two good previews of the exterior of the next-generation Porsche Boxster (981). And now, for the first time, we can take a look inside. While Stuttgart is making moves to further distance the Boxster from 911 on the outside, it appears on the inside they’re doing more to align the two models. At least, on first glance the family resemblance to the Panamera saloon and 911 are clear to see.

That’s a good thing, too. Porsche has made great grounds on the quality of its interiors in recent years and it is pleasing to see the trend continue.

There’s been plenty of speculation that the all-new Boxster will be unveiled in Detroit next month. But Auto Express reckon we’ll have to wait for the Geneva show in March.

Porsche at Le Mans: The 1980s

Porsche at Le Mans, the 1980s

Porsche continues its return to Le Mans series with a look back at the 1980s. Perhaps the best Le Mans racecars of all time, the 956 and 962, enjoyed unprecedented success during the decade. The 936 started it all, winning the race in 1981 and starting a sequence of victories for Porsche that lasted until 1987 (four wins for the 956, two for the 962).

Legendary driver Derek Bell says it best, “This car [956] set the bar for Porsche forever and they have to come back with something like this… they have to come back and do the same. People only talk about outright winners.”

It’s just a shame that Porsche is doing all this talking now and we have to wait until 2014 to see if they can deliver on their promises.

Last peek at Boxster before official reveal?

Porsche Boxster prototype

Earlier talk of the new Porsche Boxster says we should be expecting an official reveal next month when the bright lights are shining on Detroit.

We’ve already seen what is believed to be an undisguised 2012 model Boxster, which clearly shows the more dramatic side air intakes behind the rear doors. Otherwise those pics were a bit grainy. These new shots, via World Car Fans, are of a much better quality, but the minimal camouflage does, of course, cover the finer details.

The rear of the car is interesting with a swooping line running across the boot into the rear tail lights. That could end up being a bit too clever, but we’ll have to wait and see when the official reveal takes place.

Overall, we reckon the next-gen Boxster looks the goods; it’ll be the best looking Boxster yet.

How long does it take to stop from 330km/h?

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 will rightly be considered as one of the finest iterations of the 997 model range. Of course, a 911 is not all about outright acceleration. Although, as this clip shows, the RS 4.0 has plenty of up and go.

But what about its braking performance? Well, check the short clip after the break, with sport auto tester Christian Gebhardt at the wheel, and find out for yourself. Suffice to say it is bloody impressive!

Buy a used Porsche and travel lemon free

1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.6 Coupe

The Porsche 911 is the most reliable used buy according to a recent Autobild TÃœV report published in Germany. Data from reports on cars of seven, nine and 11 years of age were collated and Porsche’s 911 proved to have the fewest defects of all the cars tested.

In fact, five of the top 10 cars in the report were Porsche models, including the Boxster and Cayman as well. So, your used Porsche may prove reliable, but don’t expect the running costs to be on par with your average used car.

Porsche at Le Mans: The early years

Back in July Porsche told us they would be returning to Le Mans in 2014 to chase for outright victory. Here, again, they remind us they are the Kings of La Sarthe, with 16 outright wins and ‘countless records.’

VIDEO: Porsche 911 South African dealer launch

991 Porsche 911 South African dealer launch

This amateur video recording of the 2012 Porsche 911 South African dealer launch has made its way onto the Tubes. The 991 is certainly a landmark model and with a fair portion of its development having taken place in South Africa it’s probably no suprise they put on such an elaborate production.

The driving stunts are actually not too bad. As for the rest, well, it’s a bit of a wank really. And the less said about the soundtrack, the better!

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 says g’day

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 prototype

This grainy picture gives us an early glimpse at the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3. Already we want one almost more than anything else in the world!

The 997 GT3 will remain in our top 5 most wanted list for many years yet, so it is with great anticipation we will follow the development of the 991 GT3.

So far we can just make out the familiar styling traits; revised front aero and fixed rear wing. There’s also the usual centre-exit exhaust at the rear as well.

We understand the next GT3 is due for release in 2013, but hopefully Porsche will come good with official pics and data some time next year.

VIDEO: This is the Porsche Standard

2012 Porsche 911 documentary

Porsche has just released this short film on the making of its new 991 911. The moody voiceover man tells us Porsche goes to extreme lengths to test their cars.

Some of the tests you can imagine; hot, dusty desert conditions and winter temperatures that are off the scale, for example. Some, you probably can’t. Such as using a manky old kettle to pour boiling water over the headlights to ensure they don’t crack.

Mr Moody-Man also says they have tested the car in conditions most Porsche drivers would never dream of. The point of all this? According to the blurb on the YouTube clip:

‘Our engineers took the car on the most demanding road trips imaginable while in the most punishing of climates. They pushed the test vehicles to operating extreme months before the cars global debut. Why? To guarantee that the seventh-generation 2012 Carrera 911 will perform to Porsche Standards on the German Autobahn, interstate highway in the US and anywhere else a car’s owner might be.’

That, so they say, is the Porsche Standard.

Worldwide premiere of RHD 991 Porsche 911

RHD 991 Porsche 911

Porsche has a long and proud history in Australia. Indeed, Australia’s first Porsche dealer, Norman Hamilton, encouraged and helped pay for Porsche to make the first ever right-hand drive model after coming to a handshake deal with Dr Ferdinand Porsche.

It’s fitting, then, that the worldwide debut of a right-hand drive 991 Porsche 911 took place in Melbourne at an invitation only event on the weekend held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Australia.

The car shown above, a 3.8 litre Carrera S, will remain in the country ahead of the first batch of new 911 deliveries expected in March 2012. Start saving, you only have until then to get your $230K together if you want to be one of the first to get your hands on a new 911.

While there’s no official press material as yet, we can thank AUSmotive reader Wayne for sending in these exclusive pics. Nice to see the Carrera GT is still in the country too.

Tiff Needell reviews the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

We love the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 and we love it when there’s a video review to watch. We also love it if that review is filed by someone as capable as Tiff Needell from UK motoring program Fifth Gear. He might be a bit OTT at times, but the bloke can drive. So, off to a wet and slippery Cadwell Park he goes. Enjoy!
