Porsche at Techno Classica Essen

Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7

The Techno Classica Essen show is about to get underway. Organisers describe the event as the “World show for vintage, classic and prestige automobiles, motorsport, motorcycles, spare parts and restoration”.

Porsche will be on hand at Techno Classica once again with a suite of classic parts, but more importantly, with two of their most important models. The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (pictured above), celebrating its 40th anniversary, will be joined by the equally classic 1973 911 RSR (pictured below). Complete in Martini Racing livery the RSR looks fantastic.

That’ll buff right out

Bryan Taylor and his 1977 Porsche 911 at Phillip Island

Holy Moses!

That’s Brian Taylor, upside down, in what was his 1977 Porsche 911. The accident happened a couple of weeks ago at the Phillip Island Classic. This image is one of a spectacular sequence brought to us by the excellent Motorsport Retro website.

Although he was quite badly bruised Taylor emerged from the wreckage with no serious injuries.

If you have the stomach for it there’s a couple of amateur videos of the crash after the break.

VIDEO: Porsche 911 Cabriolet

991 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

At the Geneva Motor Show August Achleitner, Manager of the 911 model line, popped in to give us a rundown on the new Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

Achleitner tells us Porsche has made a lot of improvements to the performance and handling but they’re keeping Greenpeace at bay by also reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

More importantly, though, the 911 convertible is both stiffer and lighter than before. This all leads to Achleitner declaring, “This is still a sports car.”

If a cabrio 911 is your thing you’ll be able to visit your local Porsche Centre to pick one up next month.

Check out the clip after the break.

Chris Harris on the Porsche Boxster S

Chris Harris on the Porsche Boxster S

After his disappointing piece for the BMW M550dX Chris Harris is back in form with this Porsche Boxster S review. For the first time it has him questioning his preference for the mighty 911. That’s some wrap for what he has previously termed a girl’s car. We don’t necessarily agree with that because the Boxster has, generally, always been a cracking drive that rewards drivers, male or female.

However, it’s not all rose coloured glasses for the new 981 Boxster. In his review on Pistonheads Harris had this to say about the car’s electronic steering: “It takes about 10 seconds to spot the steering. The wheel is slightly dead in the hands compared to the old car—it doesn’t feel unnatural, just mute.”

It soon won him over, though: “Point the Boxster into a turn and it does two things completely at odds with the expectations laid-down by that initial numbness. It turns with unusual speed and efficiency, then clips the very point on the road you’d been aiming for. Repeat this process for 15 minutes and, like me, you’ll be left guppy-like with admiration.”

The video is all yours after the break.

VIDEO: The new Porsche Boxster

Fresh from its public debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show we bring you a series of videos showcasing the new Porsche Boxster. We start above with an official clip featuring Achim Stejskal, Director of the Porsche Museum, who explains a bit about the history of Porsche roadsters and its relevance to the 981 Boxster.

After the break there’s another promo clip before adding two videos from the Geneva stand. We’re big fans of the new Boxster here at AUSmotive, we reckon it looks great, it’s a bit lighter, has a wider track and can lap the Nürburgring in less than 8 minutes. We reckon those facts and these videos will help you get on board too.

Porsche Boxster

  • Peak power: 195kW
  • 0–100km/h: 5.7 seconds (PDK)

Geneva 2012: Porsche Boxster

2012 Porsche Boxster

Back in January Porsche revealed the first official photos and information on its all-new Boxster. However, Porsche had always planned to wait until the Geneva Motor Show for the roadster to make its public debut.

There’s no new press material, so we’ve repeated the text from January for you after the break. There are a few new press photos and also a short video from the launch in Geneva.

Bernhard Maier, Sales and Marketing board member sums it up best: “Driving experience, on a winding road, on a Sunday morning. The sun is shining. Good music, the best music is coming from the Boxster itself, the motor. That seems to be one of the perfect days in my life.”

One final thing, imagine how much better the Boxster will look when it’s not in gold or brown paint!

Drive Thru: Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

A while back I arranged with a mate in Melbourne to test his 997 Porsche 911 GT3 for AUSmotive. Then, a couple of weeks before I arrived he did something stupid and traded it in. True story! But it’s okay, because he managed to come up with what I soon discovered was a worthy substitute. As the title suggests it was a 911 Carrera GTS.

Only thing was, I was sworn to secrecy for a time, for a number of reasons which I shan’t bore you with here. The test took place late at night, actually it was probably early morning, and it was all a bit The Fast and the Furious. It was quite exciting. And that’s even before I’d set eyes on the car.

You see, due in part to being based in Canberra, it’s not that easy for AUSmotive to arrange access to press cars. You also have to remember that this humble website isn’t exactly the first thought that comes to mind of those handing out the keys. Least of all the no doubt lovely and sincere folk at Porsche Cars Australia. (Do you think they’re reading?) So, with grace and great appreciation I have to strike when opportunity presents.

Enough background, time to share. This test would be my first 911 experience. Indeed, it was my first Porsche experience. I was anxious, excited and just a little bit nervous.

2012 Porsche 911 now on sale in Australia

2012 Porsche 911 (991)

Following an understated worldwide RHD debut of the new Porsche 911 at a special display-only event in Melbourne last November, the 991 is now in Australia ready for local deliveries.

Initially the 3.4 litre Carerra and 3.8 litre Carrera S will start proceedings, with corresponding 911 Cabriolet models to follow in April. Exact dates for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models are yet to be announced, but it’s expected they’ll be on sale in Australia late this year or early next.

Interestingly the 997 Carrera 4, Cabriolet and Turbo models will continue to be sold in Australia until their 991 replacements arrive.

Reported in Go Auto, Porsche Cars Australia Managing Director, Michael Winkler, expects the Carrera S will continue to roughly double the sales of the cheaper model. “Australians tend to go for the best that is available,” said Winkler.

Porsche has made improvement across the board for what is just the third completely all-new 911 since its launch almost 50 years ago. As a result the overall length of the car has grown by 56mm, while the wheel base has extended by 100mm. These changes are partly aimed at reducing front-end lift, a common 911 characteristic. Width remains the same as the 997 and there’s a minor reduction in height as well.

Engine enhancements have yielded modest power gains compared to the 997 and the 3.4 litre in the Carerra has 257kW (+3kW from the old 3.6 litre), the 3.8 litre in Carrera S offers 294kW (+11kW from 997). Fuel consumption has dropped across the board and the official figures surprisingly economical (8.2l/100km for the Carrera and 8.7l/100km for the S). Real world consumption may be higher, of course, but a great starting point nonetheless.

A quick reference table showing Australian pricing is available below. If you really want to sink your teeth in the details of the 991 911 then you can download this comprehensive document The new 911 Australian Edition (2.6mb PDF) which has managed to find its way to AUSmotive’s inbox.

PDK only for next Porsche 911 GT3?

991 Porsche 911 GT3 prototype

This, we are told, is a prototype for the next Porsche 911 GT3. Certainly the centre-mount exhaust tips would indicate this to be the case. One would expect Porsche will keep a more purposeful rear wing on the balls-out GT3, so we can also surmise the GT3 is still early in its development.

Apparently the 991 GT3 will be offered with one transmission option only, just like the near-perfect 997 model. Whereas the old model was 6-speed manual only, we can safely predict the new model will have seven gears. The only question remaining is, will it be an adaptation of the 7-speed manual from the Carrera or a double-clutch PDK?

Porsche, don’t do it. Please! It has to be a manual.

Sweet dreams my love

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 litre

Here in Australia we don’t really have to deal with the concept of running skinny winter tyres or even, as Chris Harris has recently done, setting your car aside to rest until the seasons start to warm up.

But what if you did. Do you think you’d go for one last drive before putting your pride and joy into hibernation? I reckon you would too. Especially if your car was a 911 GT3 RS 4.0.

The Porsche Macan is like a tiger

Porsche Macan sketch

The yet to be born baby SUV from Porsche has been given a new name: Macan. Porsche inform Macan is the Indonesian word for tiger and “combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics”.

Previously referred to by Porsche as the Cajun the new SUV will be built in Leipzig and is scheduled to hit the market in 2014. Already you can hear the cries of “Couldn’t afford a Cayenne mate!”

Stuttgart has also passed on this sketch of its new Macan, which will be based on the Audi Q5 platform. It shows how used to the Cayenne we’ve become when we look at the drawing and think it doesn’t look too bad.
