Anticipating the 981 Porsche Cayman

981 Porsche Cayman spied

These spy shots of the next-gen Porsche Cayman (981) aren’t new, indeed they’re almost 12 months old. But we stumbled across them today in our internet travels and thought—especially in profile view—gee, the new Cayman is going to look bloody good!

That’s probably no real surprise, as the new Boxster, on which the Cayman is based, is also a fine looking car.

But when you compare the new Cayman to the previous 987 model you see the silhouette has evolved nicely. The 987 was a pretty good looking coupé to start with, but that slightly beefier rake on the rear window of the 981 has attracted our attention, and increased our anticipation for the new model.

We’re expecting to see the new Cayman at the LA Auto Show in late November.

Porsche 911 Turbo S v Nissan GT-R Track Pack

Porsche 911 Turbo S v Nissan GT-R Track Pack

In his latest Drive video Chris Harris takes to Brands Hatch in a Porsche 911 Turbo S and a Nissan GT-R Track Pack (available in the UK and Japan only). It’s not the first time the Turbo S has found itself in an online battle against the GT-R. Of course, it won’t be the last either.

To the question Harris’ mind: Does the £10K extra asked for the Track Pack over the standard GT-R make a noticeable and worthwhile difference? And, which of these two cars would he take home, assuming a desire for a daily driver capable of handling the odd track day?

Inside look: Porsche Classic workshop

Porsche Classic

Youtube channel Drive takes us to Stuttgart and inside the Porsche Classic workshop with this recent video.

Porsche Classic has a turnover of around 300 cars a year, which are attended to by a team or experts old and new. Anything from a rusty 356 requiring a back to metal rebuild, to 1960s 911s and more technically advanced 959s can be seen inside the workshop.

Original parts and tooling are used, where possible, and parts from Porsche Classic can be ordered through the broader dealership network around the globe. Interestingly, where documentation doesn’t exist, Porsche will make contact with retired former employees to confirm precise details.

It’s about emotion, they say, and ensuring that the proud record of Porsches remaining in active service continues. It’s claimed something like 70% of all Porsches ever made are still on the road.

Porsche 918 development moves forward

Porsche 918 Spyder prototype

Porsche has given us the best look yet at their 918 Spyder, featuring 770hp of petrol-electric hybrid power. The development phase has taken a step forward with near production-ready prototypes now under evaluation.

The overall look has moved on a little from the 2010 concept car, but the beautifully proportioned supercar shape has not been lost.

Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG explains, “What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance.”

Redefining is quite apt, too. Porsche claims the 918 Spyder can achieve these key numbers: 0-100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds, reach a top speed of 325km/h, use as little as three litres of petrol per 100km travelled and cover 25km with zero-emission electric power.

The 918 Spyder has the makings of something very special indeed.

Porsche Macan SUV seen out on the growl

Porsche Macan

Here’s your first look at the new Porsche Macan SUV. It’s built on the same platform as the Audi Q5, but as you can see strikes a strong resemblance to Porsche’s bigger Cayenne. If you check out the pics from Piston Spy though, you’ll see the makings of a more unique shape for the Macan. Especially over the rear quarter panels.

We expect we’ll be seeing a lot more behind the scenes Macan related guff between now and its launch in 2014.

Porsche at the 2011 Nurburgring 24 hour race

It’s almost time for the 2012 Nürburgring 24 hour race—one of the world’s truly great endurance races. For us, it’s a bigger highlight than the Le Mans 24 hour. So, in less than two weeks from now we’ll be conducting a vigil here at AUSmotive HQ while the race is underway (19–20 May).

To prepare for this year’s epic here’s a gallery of 50+ images from Porsche to help you relive last year’s triumph.

For our full coverage of the race make sure you keep an eye on AUSringers.com.

Porsche “Fefi” 960 mystery develops

Porsche 960 rendering

The above image is a rendering of a new Porsche model known as the 960. It’s been nicknamed internally as “Fefi” and it’s aimed squarely at the Ferrari 458 Italia. “Fefi” meaning Ferrari fighter for those interested. Scouting the web for details of the 960 brings more questions than answers.

As you can see the image above is clearly a two-door coupé layout. However, several reports suggest the 960 will be a four-door “coupé”. That’s all well and good, but “Fefi” is also supposed to be mid-engined, possibly using the next Audi R8 platform. Certainly the use of Volkswagen Group’s new MSB-M architecture (mid-engine rear/all-wheel drive) seems to be widely accepted.

So how do you make a four-door, mid-engined supercar to take on a 458? It just doesn’t compute. The engine used in the 960 is said to be a twin-turbo flat six, but it won’t be flat enough to put seats on top!

Summing up then, I think we can expect Porsche to pursue this “Fefi” concept and it does seem to be that it will be mid-engined; sitting in the range above the 911, but below the 918. After that, though, details seem very sketchy.

Jealous, much

Chris Harris drives BMW M3 GTS, Mercedes C63 AMG Black and Porsche GT3 RS 4 litre

Chris Harris has just filed a video that must remind him, and certainly us, what a lucky sod he is sometimes. Never mind he has awoken his own Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 from its winter slumber to take part in this three-piece fantasy; the other two cars are just as fine and just as desirable. Well, almost.

The BMW M3 GTS indulges in some ultra violence with its bright clockwork orange paintwork, while the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series is not backing away from the dark side of the force with a matt black exterior.

Look, like us, you could probably save yourself from the bother and take the RS 4.0, leave the other two behind, and just be done with it. After all, it will be the one genuinely true icon from the three cars assembled. But, life is about the journey, not the destination, and so of course we’d grab the opportunity to test all three on road and empty race track.

We doubt you’ll have your opinions altered with this video, but we think you’ll enjoy the ride. We’re just jealous we weren’t there to experience it too!

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R v Porsche 911 Turbo S

Nissan GT-R Black Edition v Porsche 911 Turbo S

You might think a video comparing a 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition with a 997 Porsche 911 Turbo S would be pretty entertaining. Especially when you consider the test involves some stunning mountain roads before a balls out drag race on an empty airfield.

Well, we’re not so sure. Take a look at Jonny Lieberman’s work from Motor Trend and let us know what you think.

Porsche Macan Turbo to strike new niche

Porsche Macan sketch

Porsche hopes its mid-size Macan SUV will discover a new high-powered nook to position itself when they stuff a 370hp (275kW) turbocharged engine under the bonnet, Autocar reports.

Currently there’s no über powerful products in the Macan’s class, although there have been reports of a 300hp Audi Q3 RS versus 320hp BMW X1 M battle in the class below. And, of course the Cayenne Turbo, BMW X5 M and the like in the category above the Macan.

According to Wolfgang Hatz, head of Porsche Research and Development, the Macan is progressing well. “It drives incredibly well and, from what we’ve seen from the competition, will be the most sporting car in its class,” he claimed. “We’ve surprised even ourselves.”

The Macan will be built on Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform and the Turbo will most likely feature a 3.0 litre V6 engine, mounted north–south, and a Torsen-based all wheel drive system.

It’s been reported for some time that Porsche will return to using four cylinder motors for its lower-spec models. Turns out the Macan could be the first to lead the charge.

Walter Röhrl on Porsches … and horses

Walter Rohrl talks about Porsches and horses

We stumbled across these videos featuring all-round motoring legend Walter Röhrl. Of course he talks a lot about Porsches (he’s at the wheel of a 997 GT3), but you may be surprised to learn Walter is not too shy to point out an interesting horse when he sees one.

The clips are a few years old now and were published by Motor Trend. Our best guess is they were produced at a media launch for the, then new, 997 911 GT3.

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia

Australian Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge

While the international motoring eye will be focused on this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, spare a thought for the homegrown wannabes, couldbes and rising stars who will kick start their racing year in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia in Mallala.

The GT3 Cup Challenge is a level below Carrera Cup racing and offers a great opportunity to compete in a highly organised series in a less formal and low pressure (relatively speaking, of course) environment.

With a new title sponsor, Staff Solutions International, the category can look forward with confidence to six round series running from this weekend until late September.

Porsche Cars Australia Motorsport Manager, Jamey Blaikie, is certainly looking forward to a big year. “In its short history [starting in 2008], GT3 Cup Challenge has grown to become one of the healthiest motorsport categories in Australia, highlighted by the strong entries for the first 2012 round at Mallala this weekend,” said Blaikie.

“It’s great to be able to announce Staff Solutions International as the Title Partner for GT3 Cup Challenge. It’s pleasing that we’ve been able to build the category to a level where it’s a marketable product and attractive enough for Staff Solutions International to become involved as Title Partner for 2012.”

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge is currently run in nine other countries, including Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Middle East, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the United States.

For a closer look at what the GT3 Cup Challenge offers take a look at the promo video from Porsche UK after the break.
