Porsche 911 Carrera S cuts Nürburgring time

991 Porsche 911 Carrera S

Porsche has done something it doesn’t normally do; release onboard video to support a claimed Nürburgring lap time. In this instance it’s the 294kW 3.8 litre 991 911 Carrera S lapping the Nordschleife in 7 minutes 37.9 seconds.

Previously, Porsche had claimed the same car lapped the Ring in 7:40, so this is a pretty handy effort from a sniffling Timo Kluck.

According to the unofficial database of lap times held on Wikipedia this is where the 991 Carrera S sits:

  • 7:33 – 997.2 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (2010)
  • 7:34 – Koenigsegg CCR (2005)
  • 7:37.9 – 991 Porsche 911 Carrera S (2012)
  • 7:38 – Lexus LFA (2010)
  • 7:38 – 997 Porsche 911 Turbo (2008)

Harris drives the 1987 Porsche 962

Porsche 962

Driving is better than talking. So, as much as we love the 918 Spyder, we prefer last week’s Chris Harris video where he was lucky enough to drive the legendary Porsche 962, which we’re belatedly sharing with you now. That said, there is some awesome discussion in this clip with Norbert Singer, the brainchild behind the ground effects aerodynamics on the Le Mans winning 962.

We also quite like Harris’ own intro to this clip on YouTube:

This car belongs to the Porsche Museum. It is worth millions of dollars. And they let me spank it at their Weissach test track. Good times.

Harris rides shotgun in the Porsche 918 Spyder

Chris Harris on the Porscje 918 Spyder

Chris Harris doesn’t like doing ride stories. That’s fair enough, driving a car for oneself is always more satisfying. But he’s made an exception for the exceptional Porsche 918 Spyder.

Truth be told, there’s not a lot of excitement in this clip. But if the technical aspects of marrying a 3.4 litre V8, which traces its roots to the RS Spyder racecar, to a bit of 21st century electric voodoo kit appeals then you’ll really enjoy what Harris has to offer.

Paris 2012: Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

And just like that Porsche has made the Panamera cool.

This is the Panamera Sport Turismo, the latest in the current craze of Shooting Brake models. Officially it’s only a concept, but we think we know where this will end up, and that’s on the roads around the world. We say, it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

The Sport Turismo is powered by an e-hybrid system, consisting of a conventional petrol 3.0 litre V6 offering 245kW and a “charged hybrid module” producing around 70kW. Somehow, Porsche claims the peak power is 306kW. Either someone at Porsche is no good at maths, or they’re being deliberately vague about the finer points of the hybrid module. Reading on, it appears to be the latter.

Racing to 100km/h will take you less than six seconds. In all electric mode you can cruise at 130km/h, although you won’t be going far with a predicted range or 30km or so. On the plus side fuel consumption is claimed to be around 3.5l/100km and it’ll take two and a half hours to recharge the battery.

Inside, Porsche has give the main dash display a makeover with a touch screen display and tech geeks will be pleased to know they can also interact with the car using their smartphone.

We just hope Porsche puts this body shape on the road. Visually, it adds a genuine cachet that the regular Panamera cannot match.

Porsche 918 Spyder at the Nürburgring

Porsche 918 Spyder prototype

Last week we reported at AUSringers that Porsche had claimed a 7 minute 14 second lap time for its 918 Spyder hybrid.

Since then Porsche has added a handful of new photos—all available here as 2000px super images—and explained a little more about the time recorded.

They say the 918 set its lap time on a one-off lap, set from a standing start. The test car was running Michelin road tyres and was also fitted with the optional Weissach Package, which boosts power to over 795hp.

NSW Police secure Porsche Panamera

NSW Police Porsche Panamera

NSW Police will no doubt be fighting for the keys of their latest fleet vehicle, a $210,000 Porsche Panamera V6. Okay it’s probably the slowest Panamera you can buy, but the 220kW 3.6 litre V6 can still propel the Porsche barge to 100km/h in 6.3 seconds. And let’s face it, would you rather be in a Panamera or a Falcadore?

The Panamera is on loan to the Harbourside Local Area Command (North Sydney) and will be used for community liaison purposes.

Superintendent Alan Sicard explains: “The thinking behind the concept is community engagement. The use of a Porsche at community events, fairs and programs will act as an ice breaker in talking to younger members of the public; in particular whose dealings or perception of the police are often generally negative.

“The Porsche gives us a chance to talk to kids on an informal basis outside the legal system in the hope that we can influence them and help them make a positive contribution to society.”

The current loan term is six months, but Porsche may be willing to extend the loan if it’s deemed to be worthwhile.

2012 German Auto Display in Canberra

2012 German Auto Display, Canberra

On a nice sunny day in the nation’s capital the Treasury car park hosted the annual Shannons German Auto Display (formerly Autofest). Normally we’d be involved in the thick of it here at AUSmotive, but other events have conspired against us. In the end it turned out to be good day to check out the camera on our new iPhone 5. We hope you enjoy the pics.

991 Porsche 911 GT3 testing in Spain

Porsche 911 GT3 prototype spied in Spain

A trio of barely disguised prototype 991 Porsche 911s have just been spied in Spain. Two of them appear to be the next-generation 911 GT3. The front splitter, centre-exit exhaust and rear wing being the most obvious styling cues.

It looks as though the new GT3 will run 245/35/20s up front and 305/40/20s at the back. Apparently all three test cars were fitted with PDK transmissions, featuring paddle shifters on their steering wheels. Please, Porsche, don’t make the GT3 a PDK only option.

According to the Porsche engineers, who were kind enough to chat to the photofrapher, the GT3 mules were running regular steel brakes with six-pot calipers at the front and four-pots at the rear.

The test posse were testing on local roads before heading to the Circuito Calafat for some track action.

So, any guesses as to what the third model 911 in the fleet might be—a Carrera GTS perhaps? Maybe not.

Official Porsche 918 announcement imminent?

Porsche 918 Spyder

Following the appearance of a leaked brochure and numerous videos of the Porsche 918 hitting YouTube, most showing the car being photographed on and around the Nürburgring, we reckon the official word on the super Spyder is not far away.

We’ve put a few video clips together for you so you can see more of the 918 and hear its 3.4 litre V8, which provides 570hp from the hybrid’s 770hp total. Of course, you can’t really hear too many sounds when the Spyder potters around Nürburg in electric mode.

Porsche 918 Spyder brochure leaked

Porsche 918 Spyder brochure

Just a day after the Porsche 918 Spyder was previewed at a private event at the Nürburgring new images have emerged, believed to be from the 770hp hybrid’s official brochure.

Above you can see the 918’s stunning Martini livery explained. There’s also a pretty slick looking Salzburg Racing Design if you don’t like driving around in a free advertisement.

But if you really want to show off to your mates then we suggest you choose to have your 918 painted in either the Liquid Metal Grey or Liquid Metal Blue finish. Even if they think the colour sucks, they’ll surely be impressed by the €50,000 price tag!

Serious punters will tick the Weissach Package, which includes a six-point racing harness, alcantara and carbon fibre interior trim, lightweight brakes and front/rear dive planes. A 35kg weight saving is also achieved thanks to the removal of the air conditioning system, audio system and a few other interior bits and pieces. Actually, maybe the posers will still tick the Weissach box too.

Oh, as an added bonus, after you’ve checked out the extra pics after the break, there’s a nice spy video of the 918 shot on the roads surrounding the Nürburgring.

Volkswagen commences Boxster production

Porsche Boxster S 981

An overflowing order book has forced Porsche to start production of the new Boxster at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück plant. The facility is the former Karmann site, which Volkswagen took over after the famous coach builder succumbed to insurmountable financial troubles in 2009.

Karmann itself had a history of building Porsches at Osnabrück, including the 356 in the 1960s and the 968 in the 1990s. The new agreement between Porsche and Volkswagen is one of the first tangible signs of cooperation since Volkswagen’s takeover of Porsche became official.

The first model to roll off the line under Volkswagen’s watch was this red Boxster S, heading to an owner in Lower Bavaria.

Speaking at the official launch of Boxster production Volkswagen Chairman, Prof. Dr Winterkorn, said: “The Boxster production in Osnabrück is a clear sign of the rapid coalescence of Volkswagen and Porsche. Production in Osnabrück means creating synergies that will benefit customers, staff and location alike.”
