Geneva 2013: Porsche 911 GT3 revealed

991 Porsche 911 GT3

It just looks perfect.

From every angle the new 991 Porsche 911 GT3 has a purposeful stance that just looks right. Simply by looking at the new GT3 it begs you to drive it.

On to the official stats for the latest 911 GT3. It has a tidy 350kW (475hp) at 8250rpm and 440Nm of torque at 6250rpm on tap from its new DFI 3.8 litre flat-six cylinder engine. That’s 15hp more than the new 911 GT3 Cup, which uses the old Mezger engine. The new GT3 sees off 100km/h in 3.5 seconds and 200km/h will be gone in under 12 seconds. It has a top speed of 315km/h.

The rear axle is 44mm wider than the 991 Carrera S. The conrods are titanium and forged pistons, just a couple of the measures that allow the 3.8 litre to rev to 9000rpm. The new 20″ wheels are made from forged alloy. The unladen weight of the GT3 is 1430kg.

As predicted there’s an active rear-wheel steering system. At speeds below 50km/h the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, but above 80km/h the rear wheel steer in parallel to the fronts. The result, Porsche says, is a more agile and dynamic GT3.

Of course, the elephant in the room is the PDK-only transmission. The GT3 specific 7-speed box, we’re told by Andreas Preuninger (more on that here), is lightning fast—changes take less than 100 milliseconds—and more involving than a manual. There was much debate at Porsche over the merits of PDK versus manual transmission and the move to PDK wasn’t taken lightly.

For those keeping score the 2013 911 GT3 can lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes 30 seconds.

There’s more pics below with a couple of videos along the way as well. Also available is Porsche’s full Geneva Motor Show Press kit which has lost more detail on everyone’s favourite 911. Today is a very good day!

UPDATE: We can confirm the 991 911 GT3 will go on sale in Australia towards the end of this year. Pricing to be announced closer to launch.

See and hear the 991 Porsche 911 GT3

991 Porsche 911 GT3 prototype
991 Porsche 911 GT3 prototype

The Rennlist forum has come up trumps with some excellent, and hopefully reliable, details on the new 991-based Porsche 911 GT3. The information comes from an anonymous source who claims to have met Porsche engineers at the workshop you see above.

In dot point form here is what our new best friend was allegedly told:

  • 3.8 litre engine is a brand new engine with dry sump (not DFI 9A1 or Mezger)
  • Engine will form basis of next-generation Cup cars
  • Redline 9,000rpm, tacho reads to 10,000rpm (as shown above)
  • Power is more than 450hp (335kW), but wouldn’t confirm
  • Completely different PDK transmission
  • No Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) in test car pictured
  • No Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) in test car
  • Wide body chassis used from Carrera 4
  • Car pictured is a Clubsport version with rear cage fitted
  • Recaro seats, foldable (not one piece)
  • Rear wing is fixed and manually adjustable, similar to 997.2 GT3, but has been refined
  • Air scoop is centre feeding
  • Car retains previous three-piece muffler, side mufflers look same as before, with a new smaller centre piece
  • Test car pictured running Dunlop Sport MAXX tyres (245/20 front, 305/20 rear)
  • Wheels feature centre locks
  • New brake system, with enormous front calipers, disc is alternating drilled size
  • Rear control arms look like the ones in the 997 GT cars
  • ESC (electronic stability control), TC (traction control), sport exhaust, PDK-S (shown on the centre console)
  • Nürburgring lap times around 7 minutes 30 seconds

That all looks pretty good, we’re sure you’ll agree. And judging by the audio clip below this new 3.8 litre engine sounds the business as well. In addition, there’s a few more spy shots after the break.

Porsche 911 GT3 details emerge ahead of Geneva debut

Porsche 911 GT3 prototype spied in Spain

The 991-based Porsche 911 GT3 will be revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show. Word on the street says a Porsche dealer with loose lips has leaked a few GT3 details.

First, the good news, of sorts. The 991 GT3 will be powered by a 450hp 3.8 litre flat six able to reach 100km/h in only 3.5 seconds. Reportedly the new 911 GT3 can lap the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 34 seconds. According to the unofficial database on Wikipedia, that would be a six second improvement over the 997.2 GT3, but still around 15 seconds slower than the Nissan GT-R.

It’s also expected the new GT3 will feature a revolutionary rear-wheel steering system. What is new and revolutionary about that we shall have to wait and see.

Now, the bad news. Earlier reports the 991 911 GT3 would drop it’s manual transmission in favour of a PDK ‘box appear to be accurate. I don’t care that I’ll never be able to afford a GT3, I’m still going to be pissed off at Porsche if they don’t offer a manual box in their most desirable car!

It’s got an appetite for it!

Chris Harris reviews the Porsche Cayman S

The Porsche Cayman S is very close to the top of our Lotto wish list. Chris Harris, in perhaps not his best review ever, does a pretty good job of explaining why.

You’ll enjoy this one.

This ain’t no sewing machine!

The Singer 911 by Chris Harris

In my period of relative inactivity I almost missed Chris Harris’ first video of the year, featuring the Singer 911. Shame on me. And, if you don’t know what a Singer 911 is, then shame on you. Thankfully, though, there’s almost 30 minutes of beauty for you after the break.

Generally speaking, I’m not a true fan of old 911s, and strictly speaking these Singer machines aren’t old cars, they just look like that way.

Want.

Former Porsche CEO charged with market manipulation

Dr Wendelin Wiedeking walks

Former Porsche CEO, Wendelin Wiedeking, and ex-Chief Financial Officer, Holger Haerter, have been charged with market manipulation, following three years of investigations. The charges surround the handling of the ill-fated takeover of Volkswagen back in 2009.

Automotive News has the story:

The indictment was filed after more than three years of investigations into claims Porsche misled investors in 2008 when it denied that it sought to buy VW. The company in October of that year disclosed a plan to take control of the carmaker.

“The investigation found the suspects in February 2008 at the latest made the decision to increase Porsche’s share in Volkswagen to 75 percent in the first quarter of 2009 to prepare a takeover,” Claudia Krauth, spokeswoman for Stuttgart prosecutors, said today.

In the period between March 10 and October 2, 2008, Porsche denied at least five times that it planned to increase its VW stake to 75 percent, Krauth said. The denials influenced VW’s share price, she said.

Coolest Porsche 917 replica ever!

Coolest Porsche 917 replica ever

Imagine this, a full scale Porsche 917 replica; in iconic blue and orange Gulf livery, of course. Cool huh! But, wait there’s more. Imagine if said replica opened like a clamshell to reveal a 1:32 scale working slot car track inspired by the layout of the famous Le Mans circuit!

Well, imagine no more, because such a creation already exists. All you need to do is hand over US$125,000 to the maker and they’ll hand over one of the best toys money can buy.

Ouch, $125K. We knew there had to be a catch.

2013 Porsche 911 Turbo chasing Spanish sun

2013 Porsche 911 Turbo prototype

With much of Europe carpeted in snow Porsche has sent its 991-based 911 Turbo prototypes to the sunshine of Spain to continue their development program.

The next-gen 911 Turbo could be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. If it does make a showing we’re expecting to see it powered by a twin-turbo 3.8 litre flat six, with around 520hp on tap. That’s about 20hp more than the old Turbo, which should be complemented by a weight drop of some 60kg or more.

Torque-vectoring technology from the PDK-only 997 Turbo S will carry over to the new car. As you can see in the image above, there’s a paddle shifter behind the steering wheel confirming the least surprising news that a 7-speed PDK transmission is a high priority.

A 7-speed manual box will also be offered. Alas, we wonder for how much longer when you consider around 95% of 997-based 911 Turbos were sold with PDK ‘boxes. Heathens!

What the hell is this?

Porsche craps on its lovely new Cayman

We love Porsche. We love the new Cayman. This, though; this Follow the code of the curve video is shit. It’s a shame, too, because Porsche usually nail their marketing by being concise and without letting the minutiae of life get in the way. But not this time.

Panamera Sport Turismo goes for a drive

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Porsche impressed us, and many others, when it rocked up to the Paris Motor Show with the Panamera Sport Turismo. First, it was, at last, a smart looking Panamera with pleasing proportions. Second, it is another foray into hybrid motoring for the German sportscar maker, willing to embrace the new world order of greener mototing.

With this new video Porsche shows glimpses of the car in motion, its interior and we hear the thoughts of the head honchos who signed off on the car.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup by numbers

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Porsche has very kindly reminded us about their new 911 GT3 Cup track weapon. They’ve done so by video and interspersed the footage with key statistics from the car. Think of it as an educational video, then. If you’re watching at work, classify the time spent as personal development; you can probably even claim it when tax time comes. Probably.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup revealed

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Just a day after releasing a teaser video, Porsche is telling the world all about its new competition-only 911 GT3 Cup. The 991-based racer is powered by 338kW (460hp) 3.8 litre flat six cylinder engine, which probably tells us the yet to be released road-going model will stick with the same size engine.

Paddle shifters on the steering wheel are used for the first time in a Porsche trophy car. They should make moving through the 6-speed dogbox a little easier. Tyre widths have been increased, an extra 20mm on the front sees 270-section tyres being used, with an extra 10mm at the rear resulting in 310-section tyres.

Other aspects improved over the old 997 model include braking and safety. The race seat, for example, offers better neck and head protection. A specially designed escape hatch in the roof has been added to make access to the cockpit easier in the event of a serious accident.

Want one? You’ll need €181,200 plus taxes to buy yourself a new GT3 Cup and then, of course, running costs to play.
